POPSColors of the Night Sky The last photo is a panorama - scroll far over to the right to see the entire image (or clicking will take you to the original). The second to last photo is called Emerald Tornado. "The blood moon is also known as the “Hunter’s Moon” or “Sanguine Moon.” While folklore warns that a blood moon is a sign of bad times, the red star of night is anything but. The name “Hunter’s Moon” originates from the fact that this moon cast a brilliant light, allowing hunters to continue to seek prey even at nighttime" "No matter how much fact stands behind blood moons, some people still continue to think of them as harbingers of doom (but they are really quite the opposite!)"

POPSYoung Saudi's "It offers young men very little in the way of entertainment, with no movie theaters and few sports facilities. If they are unmarried, they cannot even enter the malls where women shop." I can't believe the attitude of that last comment in this clip. With two or three words, a man can get what he wants from a woman?? Women are not rational?? "When a man joined her at the table — someone they assumed was her husband — she removed her face veil, which fueled Enad and Nader’s hostility. They continued to make mocking hand gestures and comments until the couple changed tables. Even then, the woman was so flustered she held the cloth self-consciously over her face throughout her meal. “Thank God our women are at home,” Enad said." Ok, I can't imagine a world in which women are required to stay at home all the time. Let's reverse the situation. Suppose MEN were required to stay in the home and all I had to look at were women in the workplace, in the shopping malls, etc. (cont)

POPSFather of India's Green Revolution Prepares for Evergreen Revolution
“In every crisis is an opportunity” Swaminathan is once again agitating for revolution -- this time a perpetual one. In the early ‘60s, India grew 12 million tons of wheat every year. Starvation was rampant and the country imported much of its food. Swaminathan, an agricultural geneticist, developed new strains of high-yield wheat for his country and the programs that led to an India that exports food. Today, India grows some 70 million tons of wheat and has become the world's second-largest wheat producer. He says that today India has reached a plateau in production and productivity because a problem of under investment in rural infrastructure. His M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture & Rural Development follows a pro-nature, pro-poor and pro-women orientation to a job-led economic growth strategy in rural areas through harnessing science and technology for environmentally sustainable and socially equitable development.

POPSWhat Ideas Will Shape our Future? The 10 Ideas of the 21st Century "More than money, more than politics, ideas are the secret power that this planet runs on." "The 21st century will overturn many of our basic assumptions about economic life. The 20th century saw the end of European dominance of global politics and economics. The 21st century will see the end of American dominance too, as new powers make their voices heard on the world stage." "The challenges of sustainable development—protecting the environment, stabilizing the world's population, narrowing the gaps of rich and poor and ending extreme poverty—will render passé the very idea of competing nation-states that scramble for markets, power and resources." "The defining challenge of the 21st century will be to face the reality that humanity shares a common fate on a crowded planet." "6.6 billion people living in an interconnected global economy producing an astounding $60 trillion of output each year."

POPSChris Matthews Stumps Right-Wing Radio Host: ‘Tell Me What Chamberlain Did?’ ‘I Don’t Know’ MATTHEWS: You don’t know what you’re talking about, Kevin. You don’t know what you’re talking about. Tell me what Chamberlain did wrong. JAMES: Neville Chamberlain was an appeaser, Chris. Neville Chamberlain was an appeaser, all right? MATTHEWS: I’ve been sitting here five minutes asking you to say what the president was referring to in 1938 at Munich. JAMES: I don’t know. MATTHEWS: You don’t know, thank you. You don’t understand there’s a difference between talking to the enemy and appeasing. What Chamberlain did wrong, most people would say, is not talking to Hitler, but giving half of Czechoslovakia in 1938. That’s what he did wrong. Appeasement is giving things away to the enemy.

POPSHow the Bicycle Emancipated Women "The National Woman Suffrage Association was formed by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton 139 years ago today. To mark the anniversary, Chris Connolly is here to discuss the role of the bicycle in the women’s movement." Highly recommended article at the source...clipped only a very small portion of the entire article: http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/14985 I didn't mean to place the photo of the woman running the Triathlon after the text "Clearly, women needed to change their underwear." I don't know how it ended up that way....

POPSHuman Caused Climate Change Most educated people know that global warming is a misnomer. There are parts of the world that will cool while warming happens elsewhere. The key is to keep the oceanic conveyor belt stable so our climate remains fairly constant.

POPSFootball on the Sabbath? Certainly not! This is a tough one - it's my background, so I kind of get the argument. At the end of the day, I don't follow sabbath observance, but I do respect the culture it comes from... However, would letting them play not be a really good way of celebrating their talents (or god-given gifts, as no doubt sporting prowess is considered to be by such religious commmunities)? ps. football in this case is soccer ;-)

POPSHarpooned: Greenpeace exposes scandal at heart of whaling While the scandal of stolen whalemeat is the most shocking, it's not the only revelation to come from this investigation. Further allegations from our informants that require investigation include: * Throwing tons of whale meat overboard daily because they did not have processing capacity for the increased quotas * Cancerous tumors being found and cut out of whales and the remaining meat processed for public sale * Targeted hunts to ensure maximum catch, not random "sampling" as required by the research permits * Harsh working conditions because of the increased workload from the increased quotas Download the full report

POPSThe New Face of Racism: Hilary Clinton Hillary Clinton may well be the youngest living Dixiecrat. Basically, her campaign strategy has come down to this: 1. There are lots of Americans who would vote against a person based on the color of his skin. (I bet you can't guess which color they "aren't quite ready for"!) 2. These people are so important to the Democratic Party that we should on no account offend their delicate sensibilities by fielding an, ehm, colored candidate. 3. By virtue of her being white, she has the key character trait that appeals to the DNC base, which is the ability to pander to the much vaunted "Racist Redneck" demographic. Are her values in line with the Democratic Party? They certainly don't represent me! In fact, I would prefer it if racists didn't vote for the candidate I support. After all, nobody is looking for the David Duke endorsement!

POPSDogs just want to have fun
Dogs have personalities if you watch them. We have Izzy. When he gets a chewy bone, he likes to throw it in the air like a toy, smiling. Sometimes he loses it, or gets ripped off. He has more fun playing with it than eating it. Izzy come up with that one. Pokemon is serious most of the time, and barks at anyone she hasn't seen in a week when they walk in the door. She's been doing it since she was born. She's 9 now. We have a picture of her in the litter a few weeks old, and you can tell it is her by the look on her face. But she does the 'wiggle' Like rolling on the grass with a smile on her face, (It's usually on someones bed, she feels important then. on 'Prime real estate'). Duke is always barking. If you know him you know why. He wants you to go outside to play with the ball.He asks everybody. Most of the dogs would play with the ball-if Duke gave them the chance. Duke has 4 balls. If you kick all of them around he can't be happier. Lani bows when she knows it's time for a walk
