POPSAnd the most commonly shared topic is... Not so sure this would prove true over a wider population segment, but a study of the most emailed stories from nytimes.com revealed a very interesting result. I would have guessed politics, but i would have been wrong...

POPSMichael Jackson's beautiful Earth Song This song and video blow me away! Where the heck are the young artists who are supposed to be writing about this stuff...important stuff. I can't believe that with all the insanity in the world, the most popular of the pop stars for the most part have nothing more to sing about than sex, dancing, partying, etc.

POPSFord Motor, then and now... As i read this, it just seemed so worthy of being Amplify'd. Thanks to http://roprice.amplify.com/ for bringing this post to my attention...very interesting perspective on the automobile industry by Seth Godin.

POPSApple represents the auteur model of innovation" Not that i know all that much about the inner workings of Apple, but from what i've read and seen, i can't imagine a company anywhere near as big that revolves so much around the vision and skills of one person.

POPSIs Facebook Connect the new driver's license? I think of Facebook Connect (and potentially Twitter Connect too), as being analogous to a driver's license, social security card or club membership card. Much like in our offline lives we depend upon these things in order to identify ourselves and get in to places, FB Connect is filling that same role online. In my opinion, regardless of whether people tire of the user experience on Facebook, having a Facebook ID will only become a more essential and ubiquitous part of our online identities.

POPSThe life of a football fan... If you don't like hearing someone scream curse words, don't watch this. If, on the other hand, you're a die hard football fan, you know you've been this guy before :)

POPSGuess the percentage of Twitter users who Tweeted last month? I would have thought it was higher than this. I fully appreciate (and experience) the reality that a great percentage of registered users don't actually "use" a service, but i would have thought Twitter was more in the 30-35% range. For all the incredible free promotion Twitter has gotten, it has to be a source of concern for them that so many millions of people signed up and decided it wasn't for them.

POPSThink people are fed up with Washington? You're right! These statistics, while i suppose not all that surprising, are truly remarkable. I mean the country is just fed up...plain and simple. Not sure what will come of this...but at some point you have to imagine the pendulum will have swing too far and will begin to swing back (we can only hope so).

POPSDying for social media (literally) via @shonali @kamichat Every so often you come across a line like this that just stops you in your tracks...it's not that we don't realize how completely messed up things are in some parts of the world, but to really digest the impact of this reality is so disturbing and hard to comprehend. Here we are on sites like Amplify and Twitter speaking our minds, being heard, learning and connecting with other human beings...while people in some parts of the world face death because of their desire to do the same thing. I honestly hate to even think that we should appreciate how lucky we are... because the right to speak should be a right that everyone is born with. But we should never forget or ignore that so many people don't enjoy this very basic human need.

POPSWhat keeps people from liking Twitter? via @scobleizer
While I think Robert makes some smart points in this blog post about how Twitter could further improve the way they recommend users, I don't think he's right in identifying the main reason why new users aren't figuring out anything useful to do on Twitter. Robert suggests that "They aren't being shown enough other members with interests that match their own!" Perhaps that's true. But in my opinion there is a more fundamental reason for this... For the most part, I believe Twitter is enjoyable for people who participate in the conversation (that means they not only speak, but are listened to). For these users, Twitter is very enjoyable and sticky. But if you're a random person following a whole bunch of Twitter celebs, the odds of you being listened to are very low. After a while, it's just not that much fun to watch people throw 140 messages out there. In order for the micro-format to work, people have to feel like they're engaged. Like it or not, tweets just aren't that int

POPSThe United States of Corporate America I'm not going to criticize this decision because quite honestly, i don't have the Constitutional expertise to judge it. But i do believe that corporations have a disproportionately large influence on government affairs and this decision seems like it will perpetuate that reality. The good news is that the rise of social media is giving a voice and power to the people in ways that money can't buy (at least not yet).

POPSDoes the bank always win? I sure hope this suggestion (that the banks will pass the cost of Obama's bank levy on to their customers) proves to be false. I'm as capitalist as they get, but i am really starting to find myself to be furious at the banks. What part of "we bailed your asses out!" don't they comprehend? And i don't want to hear the rebuttal about "some banks didn't get assistance" or "this bank already paid the money back." Bottom line, if there was no bailout, the system would have collapsed. "THE SYSTEM" - that means all of them.
7
POPSWhat I'd like to say to the banking industry... Look, i'm all for free markets and capitalism. I think the government needs to stay out of business as much as possible. But when you go to the government hat in hand seeking a bazillion dollar handout, don't then cry foul when the government asks you to shoulder a disproportionate share of the burden (that was largely caused by your reckless behavior). I, like most people, blame the banking industry for the economic collapse that has impacted all of us. The fact that you have so quickly got your game back on should be prompting you to thank the American people for saving your sorry asses and feeling eager to do what you can to return the favor. Stop bitching and start helping.

POPSClipmarks gets the all clear sign! Thanks to the awesomeness of our users, McAfee has changed our rating back to green. As odd of this sounds, i actually look back at the whole experience of being put on McAfee's "extreme caution" list as a happy one because the support we received from our users was so amazing to see. Reading your comments and seeing the way many of you came to our defense is something i'll never forget. Thank you to everyone who helped and everyone who expressed their support for Clipmarks! For those of you who don't know what i'm talking about, see this clip i posted a few weeks ago http://bit.ly/8qahcM

POPSAlicia Keys new album has some gems! @AliCiaKeYs I don't usually post things like this, but there are a few songs on Alicia Keys' new album that i absolutely love...the kind you just can't resist singing at the top of your lungs (thank goodness for the privacy of driving). That said, i do agree with this review that there are some 'eh songs on the album too. But for the enjoyment of a handful a gems, i highly recommend buying this.

POPSMove over Wall St. There's a new financial capital...it's called Washington D.C. Way too much consolidation of power in Washington. The entire philosophy upon which the United States of America was created is now being compromised by the government's involvement in everything. People are so eager/desperate to plug holes that were created by the recent financial crisis that they're forgetting the principles that lie at the foundation of our country. I strongly recommend you read this entire article to get a sense of the magnitude of the shift.

POPSWas the swine flu a hoax? My goodness! The mere thought of this is sickening. While on one hand i hope this is true as it would obviously be good from a health perspective, if this is true it represents a new low for our corporate-led society.

POPSWall St. bonuses offend White House advisor. Please...talk is so cheap! Personally, i'm more offended that people like this go on tv talking about how offended they are about things they don't have the courage to deal with. If she's so offended by the insanely large bonuses on Wall Street, why doesn't she advise her boss...the President of the United States...to do something about them. My goodness, they play us for such fools. This could have been anticipated and dealt with a year ago when these banks came hat in hand begging for a bailout. And it could and should still be dealt with now.

POPSTwitter is like golf... Though the clip below can be interpreted to suggest that Twitter is a big waste of time, i wouldn't read it that way. The way i see it, Twitter is like golf. Though i'm not into golf anymore, i used to love it. But i loved it because out of every 85-90 shots i took each round, 2-5 of them were things of beauty. They are the ones i remembered...they are the ones that kept me wanting to play. I think Twitter is like that...it's not that you get a high percentage of great Tweets in your stream, but you get just enough to keep you coming back.

POPSAll Americans have the right not to own a home! The idea expressed over the past decade that all Americans should be able to own a home has proved to be flat wrong. Nice in theory - not even close to realistic. Now we're left with people voluntarily ditching houses they can't afford. As far as the morality or responsibility of it - I say people should do what they have to do to protect themselves and their family. They owe the banks and the system that got us into this mess absolutely nothing!

POPSTaco Bell's weight loss spin... Imagine if everyone just stopped eating crappy fast food. That would probably do more for the collective health of our society, and therefore bring down health insurance costs, than anything i've heard proposed.

POPSLet's travel back in time (way back in time)... This is astounding. The sheer size of universe, measured in both space and time is simply impossible for me to comprehend. In trying to consider this, I can't help but feel all the more perplexed by the insanity of our world. Wars are fought and hatred persists because of religious beliefs that are based on historical events that supposedly happened over the past few thousand years - yet the Hubble Telescope looks back into space/time at galaxies that have been around for 13.2 billion years. I find these things impossible to reconcile.

POPSCheck out what I just bought...no check out what i just bought!! If this doesn't epitomize our consumption driven society, then i don't know what does. I don't typically root against anyone, but i really really hope this service doesn't take off. The idea of a society that's currently overwhelmed with debt and growing unemployment embracing a social network that's all about what we're buying just doesn't sit well with me.

POPSWhat social media means to me... This is an excerpt from a piece I just wrote (it continues at the source). I was inspired to write it after looking at a series of photos labeled "The Decade in Pictures" that made me feel very sad about this past decade. After looking at them my only thought was that hopefully we are all so fed up with the way things have been that we can rally together to bring about a better decade ahead. The potential impact of social media gives me great hope! Oh, and i didn't realize that written posts didn't make their way into the Amplify Newsfeed of Public Timeline...i ought to rethink that :)

POPSMy response to McAfee about Clipmarks As most of you now know, McAfee has recently been advising people to use Clipmarks with 'extreme caution'. I wanted to share my response here. More positive reviews from our users would help tremendously. To post a review, you need to first registrater here http://bit.ly/7moCYE. I am very sorry to ask this of you.

POPSThere ought to be hell to pay. Yet another article outlining how the largest investment banks - particularly Goldman Sachs - manipulated the market for their own benefit. What really irks me more than anything is that after betting against the very products they were selling to their clients, they got a MASSIVE government bailout while some of their top competitors got wiped out. To say the game is rigged is the understatement of the year.

POPSPlease help Clipmarks... As many of you may already know, Clipmarks.com was recently labeled a 'security risk' by McAfee because of recent activity by spammers on the site. We are trying very hard to control the situation and it would help tremendously if you would post a positive review of clipmarks on the source page. I would greatly appreciate your help! eric

POPSThe key to our sustainability... I Amplify'd this statement directly from commentary posted by Open Intelligence here http://bit.ly/858Nur. It seems so simple, yet sadly is proving to be very difficult. Some very interesting clips on the subject have recently been Amplify'd by http://openintelligence.amplify.com and http://egs.amplify.com.

POPSThe psychology of menus...seriously. I suppose it makes sense that at a time of financial stress for so many people, restaurant owners are doing whatever they possibly can to make the experience of laying out money for food less intimidating. That said, I think our national past time has shifted from baseball to figuring out how to get consumers to feel comfortable spending more money than they should.

POPSThe painful life of a football player...years later. Though i suppose it shouldn't be surprising, to read the stories of former professional football players - who can barely move and live in constant pain - is extremely disturbing. It seems disgusting that the NFL has turned their back on them. I'm a huge football fan, but i have to admit that i feel uncomfortable being a fan of a sport that will end up leaving so many men practically disabled.

POPSSniper in Iraq? There's an iphone app for that (via @vyadav) I originally read this in a clip posted earlier but couldn't resist Amplifying this particular piece. I suppose it shouldn't seem so odd to me, but the visual of an iphone being used by snipers to perfect their craft of shooting people just seems so crazy to me.

POPSWill marketers be the only people left on Twitter? I said month's ago that i thought Twitter's strategy of courting marketers would eventually backfire...no place that is dominated by marketers will ever last as a social media haven. The recent monthly stats on Twitter suggest that this could be in the early stages of playing out. It's certainly not too late, but if Twitter continues to aim at marketers, they will lose the audience that attracted the marketers in the first place.

POPSVideo game sales slumping? I hope so!! Personally, I think people in this country spend way too much time and money on video games. We need to get serious...we need to get to work. We've fallen hard in the past couple of years and the attitude that got us into this mess is not going to get us out of it. If we took half the time and money spent playing video games and applied it to work that needs to be done, we'd go a long way towards improving things.

POPSLet's just borrow more so we can buy more...duh! If you compare a country to a company of individual, the idea that any entity that has too much debt can actually solve their problem by accumulating more debt seems absurd to me (and Jim Rogers as well). And the extent to which Americans consume is not only economically unfeasible, it is sort of pathetic. These days, I'm thinking we should make our county's moto "a flat screen for everyone!"
