POPSJapan Abandons America During the run-up to the election, Hatoyama’s finance minister told the bbc he was worried about the future value of the dollar, and that if his party were elected in the upcoming national elections, it would refuse to purchase any more U.S. treasuries unless they were denominated in Japanese yen. Japan is the world’s second-largest economy. It is also America’s second-most-important creditor. The U.S. government owes Japan over $724 billion! The only nation America owes more money to is China ($800 billion). The U.S. also imports $140 billion worth of goods from Japan each year. If Japan were to follow through with its threat to only lend in yen, the dollar would probably fall hard. What would that mean? America gets more expensive consumer goods, higher unemployment, and currency inflation. If other nations like China follow suit, we would be looking at a currency crisis—Zimbabwe-style.

POPSZimbabwean girl speaks out about rape, in captivity. A child rights activist, who asked not to be named, says the scale of the rape and abuse in the last few months has taken aid workers by surprise. "We have been caught unaware by this political crisis where women and girls are being abused and raped in the areas the ruling party has sealed off," she says. "These abuses should leave politicians hanging their heads in shame for not assisting their own mothers and sisters as is the norm in African culture." As the country heads for a second round of a presidential election on 27 June, the MDC says Maidei's case is not unique. "Pungwes" are gatherings held in the open where people are forced to sing revolutionary songs to prove their loyalty to the ruling party. Many residents are made to attend, including girls as young as 16 where, if they catch a commander's eye, they are kept at the base until the militia leave.

POPSSri Lankan beach was 'unimaginable hell' Funny how we always talk about the evils of ethnic cleansing when we read about it in history books. Yet the world sits and watches innocents die. Gaza, Sri Lanka, half the countries of Africa, etc. Add a few countries with madmen in charge Nth Korea, Zimbabwe etc The expendables. I'll wait for the movie.

POPSZimbabwe appeals for aid to help million homeless I wouldn't trust Mugabe's involvement in the fair distribution of aid. He has made the problem so he must go. He should be fronting the World Court for genocide. Seen his death camps. Political prisoners starving to death along side others who were driven to crime to feed families.

POPSAxis of Upheaval If only we'd taken care of business at home:a financial chain reaction, beginning in the U.S. subprime mortgage market, spreading through the banking system, reaching into the “shadow” system of credit based on securitization, and now triggering collapses in asset prices and economic activity around the world.

POPSZimbabwe cholera epidemic worsening According to a report released Tuesday by Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), new cholera patients were being registered at a rate of one every minute at the beginning of February in Zimbabwe. Unless urgent action is taken, the aid group said, the country could see a worsening of the "massive medical emergency that is spiraling out of control," MSF President Dr. Christophe Fournier told CNN Tuesday after his latest visit to Zimbabwe.

POPSCalls for Positive Intervention in Zimbabwe Calls are growing for the international community to do more about Zimbabwe, and now global human rights leaders including Desmond Tutu are engaging in a "relay fast" and other nonviolent acts to pressure neighboring countries -- particularly South Africa -- to support the Zimbabwean people's struggle for democracy and human rights.

POPS"Save Zimbabwe Now" If you talk and speak your mind, you're labelled an activist - and that's it, you're gone. The one thing people have been excited about is the inauguration of US President Barack Obama. There's a feeling that because he's of African descent he's going be more involved with our politics and he's somebody who's going to really put his foot down that there has to be a solution.

POPSMugabe Unleashes Wave of Terror with Mass Abductions Robert Mugabe is a 'dictator in democratic clothing'. The South African Development Community has been urging Mugabe to address the cholera epidemic (which he refuses to acknowledge) and the economic crisis (which he helped create). The U.S. recently gave $600,000 to fight the cholera epidemic. Any aid sent to this country ends up in the pockets and mouths of the ruling elite. Recent elections were marred with violence and intimidation designed to keep Mugabe in office. 'International pressure' and 'sanctions' are not changing anything in Zimbabwe. How can the world stand by and allow this humanitarian crisis to continue? We need a mechanism to rid ourselves of this vermin not give them aid.

POPSScavenger Hunt "Mr. Mugabe defended the suspension by arguing that some Western aid groups were backing his political rival, Morgan Tsvangirai, who bested him at the polls in March but withdrew before a June 27 runoff. But civic groups and analysts said Mr. Mugabe’s real motive was to clear rural areas of witnesses to his military-led crackdown on opposition supporters and to starve those supporters."

POPSAll Hope is Lost My friends in South Africa say there are so many problems on the continent of Africa, and this is just one more. They feel that nobody really cares about a bunch of blacks so far away from them. Apathy is the word for today.

POPSMugabe claims to offer PM job to rival in Zimbabwe Tsvangirai has long accused Mugabe of trying to sideline the opposition to a minor role in a coalition government. Deadlock on implementing their September power-sharing agreement has centred on control of key cabinet posts. The opposition leader said on Friday negotiations were endangered by what he called a wave of abductions of MDC supporters. The MDC blames Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party.

POPSMaking Water From Thin Air I'm pretty sure there are a lot of corporate types out there who aren't going to like this news. Water is expected to be for the 21st century what oil was for the 20th, so you can imagine that a village-worth of water for 300 bucks is throwing a monkeywrench into a lot of long-range planners long-range plans.

POPSZimbabwe Parliment broke, sends pols home till Nov 11
Talks to conclude the setting up of the power sharing agreement between the ruling party and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party reach a critical phase on Monday when regional leaders visit Harare. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) troika on security will try to persuade Mr Mugabe and his rivals Mr Morgan Tsvangirai and Prof Arthur Mutambara to finalise the allocation of Cabinet posts. The setting up of the inclusive government has been in the works since September 15, when the three leaders signed an historic power sharing pact to end Zimbabwe’s decade old political and economic crisis. Parliament is expected to approve a constitution amendment giving force to the power sharing arrangement and disruption of its settings might further delay the process. Compared to other law makers in the region, Zimbabwean legislators are poorly paid, with their monthly salaries averaging less than $5 (Sh400). They also complain that they had been i

POPSU.N. Chief Meets With Ahmadinejad
particularly the demand that it suspend its uranium enrichment. "We expect to hear that the secretary-general told the Iranian president that he was in violation of three Security Council resolutions, that he should comply with international demands to stop enriching uranium, and to stop the crazy talk," a spokesman for the American mission to the United Nations, Richard Grenell, said. Iranian officials increasingly are emphasizing Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's prophecy that Israel will be erased from the map of the region, but the Western response has been muted. The U.N.-affiliated Food and Agriculture Organization is hosting the three-day food conference in Rome, where yesterday Mr. Ahmadinejad blamed the "bullying powers" for creating a food crisis and called for the formation of "an independent and powerful body" that would "justly regulate" food distribution.
