POPSMark Steyn: The Suffocating Embrace of Nanny Government
In the old days, you'd go to your doctor (or, indeed, believe it or not, have him come to you), he'd patch you up, and you'd write him a check. That's the way it was in most of the developed world within living memory . . . The British National Health Service is the biggest employer not just in the United Kingdom but in the whole of Europe. Care to estimate the size and budget of a U.S. health bureaucracy? According to the U.N. figures, life expectancy in the United States is 78 years; in the United Kingdom, it's 79 " yay, go socialized health care! On the other hand, in Albania, where the entire population chain-smokes, and the health care system involves swimming to Italy, life expectancy is still 71 years " or about where America was a generation or so back. Once you get childhood mortality under control and observe basic hygiene and lifestyle precautions, the health "system" is relatively marginal. POPSCA is finally showing fiscal responsibility! Finally, some good news for our local economy: it seems that California is at long last curtailing some of its social spending, without also increasing taxes as it struggles to balance its budget. Yay! It almost makes me want to go out and celebrate! But.. I'll wait until there is some real, positive cash flow!

POPSThe "What The Hell Is This Shit Helmet Award" goes to... Tanyamm! As the current holder of the much coveted Helmet Award, I think the time has come to pass it on. I'd like to give it to Tanyamm, who every day makes us all smile with her fabulous LOLcat clips and is always so polite, sweet, funny and just an all 'round great gal, who I am proud to call a fellow clipper. It was also she, who suggested we should honour each other, so no one could be more deserving of this very, very, very prestigious award. *drumroll* "THE HELMET AWARD" *applause applause applause* Congratulations, Tanyamm!! The Helmet Award is now yours and you're free to pass it on to whomever you choose. Wear it with pride. .:D

POPSDemocrats, ages 70, wrestle in Congress Are you ready to rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrumble? She said he touched her first. Obey had categorized the earmark as one of those inappropriate Monuments to Me appropriations. Uh, uh, said a Waters staffer who told Politico that the center was named after Waters before she became a congresswomen, so there. Each turns 71 later this year.

POPSObama on Iran: Don’t Blame Me Even political leaders in Europe, specifically French President Nicolas Sarcozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, have talked about the moral imperative of supporting the Iranian people. That the president of the United States is choosing to wash his hands is a profound disappointment.

POPSConfessions of a Lapsed Atheist "And enlightened as they are, they've come up with quite the pretense for justifying the righteousness of their bigotry: they are defending the vision of our Founding Fathers from a dominionist conspiracy to establish Christianity as the state religion." "You see, for liberal Atheists, the only thing worse than religion is the Religious Right, a term they use to encompass all Christian conservatives. And what better way to siphon fuel from the Religious Right than to convince Americans that the government is perpetually on the verge of becoming a theocracy? " "But above all, Atheists stoke fear among religious and nonreligious alike that conservatives view government as a tool to force religion down your throat."
