POPSStudy shows longer parking meter hours good for city, businesses More: In the East Bay, Emeryville meters operate 24-7, and Walnut Creek runs some meters until 11pm, according to jaded's comment on a previous InOakland blog . And while not every commercial district in Oakland is as successful as those in San Francisco, an Oakland study would certainly find that many streets need parking meters to operate well after 6pm to ensure available parking for customers. Last night I had dinner in Old Oakland at a restaurant that was almost empty. At 10pm, the more than 100 street parking spaces visible from 9th and Washington included exactly one vacant space. It doesn't appear that the Oakland City Council will have a report and data-driven study on parking practices before their Oct. 6 meeting, when rolling back meter hours will again be discussed. But I think we all know what a study would say.

POPSDeceit in Obama's America - H.A. Giroux In this case, the politics of distortions and misrepresentations that Obama's lack of integrity has produced may prove to be even more dangerous than what we got under Bush because it wraps itself in a moralism that seems uplifting and hopeful while it supports policies that reward the rich, reduce schools to testing centers and continue to waste lives and money on wars that should have ended when Obama assumed his presidency.

POPSObama’s broken promise on Transparency So, who’s operating under false pretenses here: the last administration that’s calling for a full review of its most controversial program or the new one that wraps itself in the political glamor of “transparency” only to take an incoherent shot at its predecessor and move on?

POPS Carbongate Little evidence? Outdated U.N. research? No reason to rush? This is not what the Obama administration and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were telling us when they were rushing to force a Friday vote on Waxman-Markey. We were given the impression that unless we passed this cap-and-tax fiasco, polar bears would be extinct by the Fourth of July. "A new 2009 paper by Scafetta and West," the report says, "suggests that the IPCC used faulty solar data in dismissing the direct effect of solar variability on global temperatures. Their report suggests that solar variability could account for up to 68% of the increase in Earth's global temperatures." The report was the product of Alan Carlin, senior operations research analyst at the EPA's National Center for Environmental Economics (NCEE). He's been with the EPA for 38 years but now has been taken off all climate-related work. Thomas Fuller, environmental policy blogger with the San Francisco Examiner, wrote Thursday in a story developed
