tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  8-28-2008
A second explosion August 22 at a small power sub-station in Baku’s Khatai District frayed nerves further. The blast left two workers dead and three injured. Investigators are probing a connection between the mosque attack and the power station explosion. Authorities have proclaimed both incidents to be terrorist acts.

Robotic Exoskeleton Allows a Paralyzed Man to Walk - inspirational!
einbar
by einbar  8-28-2008    3
"ReWalk consists of motorised leg supports, body sensors and a back pack that contains a computer and rechargeable batteries. Users still need crutches to help with balance. To move, the user picks a setting with a remote control wrist band – “stand”, “sit”, “walk”, “descend” or “climb” – and then leans forward, activating the body sensors and setting the robotic legs in motion"

The Kamra Air Weapon Complex and Heavy Industries Taxila are also contained within the Wah Cantt. Taxila "is devoted to land combat systems," Global Security notes, while Kamra is believed to be connected with Pakistan's nuclear weapons program. The Pakistani Ordnance Factories are believed to store nuclear weapons at a "screwdriver level" - meaning the components are stored disassembled and can be assembled within hours of use.

Sill Officials Force Mold Whistleblower to Resign
cptenaud
by cptenaud  8-20-2008    3
Roeder's departure Friday, following his contact with USA Today, was purely coincidental, said Col. Sam White, an executive officer at Fort Sill. He said Roeder has a history of confrontations with base officials. "Purely coincidental." Guess the guy just had it coming, huh? "They can say whatever they want to say, but they're not being truthful," Roeder said. "I stand up for soldiers. I'm sure the word got out that I'd encouraged soldiers to speak." Roeder, a retired soldier, said he was told to resign or he would be fired. A long time ago, I would have erred on the side of the Army and its professional leadership. But not after the past half decade or so. Given its recent track record, I think the Army has to answer for this one: Why are we punishing people for trying to improve the lives of soldiers? I also think it's worth repeating what I wrote a few months ago about whistleblowers, the military, and the media:

Georgians tell of ethnic cleansing

Russia's Ambassador to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin Brands Saakashvili a "Nazi"
merrie
by merrie  8-19-2008    2
The ministry cited new operations by Russia, including the re-occupation of a military base in Senaki in the west of the country where explosions were heard by AFP. US officials said Russia had moved short-range SS-21 missile launchers into South Ossetia since fighting there halted last week, and has yet to give any sign of a significant pullback of its troops from Georgia. Instead, there were indications that Russia was adding troops and equipment to its force in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, strengthening its hold over the breakaway Georgian regions, the officials said. Russia denies deploying the SS-21s. The withdrawal will not be implemented "very swiftly", a defence ministry official was quoted as saying Tuesday in the Russian daily Kommersant. "Nobody is planning to withdraw the Russian contingent very swiftly, as there is no such necessity," he said.

Fail: More Moldy Barracks for Wounded Soldiers
cptenaud
by cptenaud  8-18-2008
Is it really that hard to square away barracks for the wounded? Given this latest eruption of maintenance incompetence and failure in leadership, I'd just like to direct everyone's attention back to a statement made in April by Brigadier General Dennis Rogers--Director of Operations and Facilities for Installation Management Command--in regard to the Fort Bragg barracks situation: "I'll tell you right now before we even start: I assume responsibility for the shortfalls in barracks maintenance which were referenced in the video by Mr. Frawley. We let our soldiers down. And I note that a number of you are veterans, or most of you are veterans, and you served. So you know that there is no excuse for that. We let our soldiers down." Of course, this statement was made after the much-hyped "nationwide walk-through." So what's the deal now? Can we meet the standard, or what? This is pathetic. What incentive do you give people to enlist when this is what you offer them?

I think there are a lot more deaths from "collateral damage" and so do officials reprting...It's disgusting what our tax dollars are doing.... ‘We have huge concerns, especially over the number of casualties from air strikes,’ said Marc Garlasco, a former air strike commander for the Pentagon who left after becoming disillusioned with the number of innocent victims in Afghanistan and who is the author of this week’s HRW report. He said the casualty figures must be viewed as extremely conservative with the total representing the ‘bare minimum’.
