Forget Vietnam Analogies - Remember Cambodia and Laos - now Pakistan
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  12-28-2009
Pakistan is beginning to look like a combination of the not-so-secret wars in Cambodia and Laos - Those pesky Viet Cong kept slipping into Laos and Cambodia to escape B-52s. Those Taliban - they just won't stay in one place. Didn't the British say the same thing about those pesky Minute Men and Green Mountain boys. Not saying the Taliban are right in any way, it's just that - we are the British to the Afghans. When Afghans unite for their own freedom against the Taliban view of the world, they will win and we can go home. The training up of Afghan army and police also seems a lot like what we did not get right in Vietnam. why? Because, we are simply empowering rule by old tribal war lords. I suspect that the Afghan people want none of the Taliban, us or the tribal war lords. Think about how to help them come to fore might help to bring peace that will last.

Bob Dylan: "i was born very far from where i'm supposed to be"
syncopath
by syncopath  12-28-2009    1
As I walked out tonight in the mystic garden The wounded flowers were dangling from the vine I was passing by yon cool crystal fountain Someone hit me from behind Ain't talkin', just walkin' Through this weary world of woe Heart burnin', still yearnin' No one on earth would ever know They say prayer has the power to heal So pray for me, mother In the human heart an evil spirit can dwell I am a-tryin' to love my neighbor and do good unto others But oh, mother, things ain't going well Ain't talkin', just walkin' I'll burn that bridge before you can cross Heart burnin', still yearnin' There'll be no mercy for you once you've lost Now I'm all worn down by weeping My eyes are filled with tears, my lips are dry If I catch my opponents ever sleeping I'll just slaughter 'em where they lie Ain't talkin', just walkin' Through the world mysterious and vague Heart burnin', still yearnin' Walkin' through the cities of the plague. Well, the whole world is filled

Death Toll Rises to 10 as Clashes in Iran Intensify
merrie
by merrie  12-28-2009    1
of the protests so far. The Shah’s forces never fired on protesters during Ashura, wary of violating the day’s sanctity. Obama Silent as Iranians Die for Freedom Iranian youth no longer chant “death to America.” Now they shout “death to the dictators” as they trample photos of Iran’s Supreme Leader. They also chant “Obama are you with us or with them ?” The reaction from the White House to the latest violence and the calls for recognition of the freedom movement? Silence. Once again, Obama doesn’t want to rock the boat with his hopes for a deal with the mad Mullahs who hold the Iranian people hostage to their warped ideology. Why won’t Obama adopt Reagan’s successful Cold War winning strategy? Because he was raised by a cadre of leftists who despised Reagan and resented the application of U.S. power especially when it was aimed at the Soviet Union with which many of Obama’s mentors and family had great sympathy.

What happened on 1 Jan 2007?
altaloman
by altaloman  12-23-2009
RAY SUAREZ: Hundreds of Iraqis spent this New Year's Day protesting Saddam Hussein's execution, which happened early Saturday morning. Demonstrators marched through the streets of Samarra, defying a curfew. They fired guns, chanted pro-Saddam slogans, and vowed revenge. Saddam was buried Sunday outside Tikrit in the village where he was born. We'll have more on Iraq after Saddam, following this news summary. The U.S. began the new year with a grim milestone in Iraq, as the U.S. death toll passed 3,000. At least 113 American troops died in December, making that the deadliest month for U.S. troops in all of 2006. More than 22,000 Americans have been wounded since the war began. The United Nations has estimated 28,000 Iraqi civilians were killed in the first 10 months of 2006.

"The Number of People Who've Seen This Bill Could Fit in a Phone Booth"

Where is the Senate Democrats' health care bill? Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) wants to know. Oh, this mysterious legislation will transform--or perhaps destroy--one-sixth of the US economy. From a McConnell press release: WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate floor Friday regarding the importance of getting it right on health care reform: The majority leader has signaled that he will finally unveil the most significant piece of domestic legislation in modern history some time on Saturday — and force a vote in the middle of the night about 36 hours later. This is outrageous. This will be a bill that none of my constituents have seen; that none of the Majority Leader’s constituents have seen; that none of you have seen and that nobody outside of the Capitol has seen. read more ........ http://bit.ly/729Q0G marathonpundit

Killer Tripped on Baggy Pants, Plunged to Death after Slaying Three
infidel70
by infidel70  12-18-2009    9
The horrified woman managed to slam and lock the door just in time, only to find the bloodied bodies of her brother and dad inside. A relentless Quinones kicked the door in and lunged for Leyanis, but she was able to make it to a fire escape, screaming for help to construction workers on the roof of the building next door. "She just ran in and told the contracting guys there was a shooting, there's somebody who got shot," said the building manager, who declined to identify herself. "She was hysterical, she couldn't talk." Meanwhile, her wounded mother scrambled to safety out the front door. Fleeing empty-handed, Quinones ditched his gun, a .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol loaded with hollow-point bullets, and made a dash down a rear fire escape. But again, his low-slung pants fell to his ankles, tripping him and sending him falling three stories to his death, authorities said.

Obama Planning a Legal Fudge for TARP?
dl211
by dl211  12-15-2009
According to Reuters, “the administration was looking at setting up a special purpose vehicle to be a conduit for money…that would get around restrictions on executive bank pay.” There’s an irony here. Didn’t “special purpose vehicles” help carry us into this credit crisis to begin with? (Answer: They did! And into the Enron debacle, too.) Besides, isn’t it unseemly for the executive to skulk around the intent of a duly passed law? If the law is flawed, shouldn’t the administration persuade Congress to change it?

TO HONOR ED FREEMAN

He's coming anyway. And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses. And, he kept coming back.... 13 more times..... And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out. Medal of Honor Recipient , Ed Freeman , died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise , ID ......May God rest his soul..... I bet you didn't hear about this hero's passing, but we sure were told a whole bunch about some Hip-Hop Coward beating the crap out of his "girlfriend" Medal of Honor Winner Ed Freeman!

December 7, 1941: Day of Deceit--FDR and Pearl Harbor
blueridge
by blueridge  12-5-2009
FDR deliberately set up a plan to provoke Japan into attacking the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor (where they sat as ducks in this new forward position, resisted by Naval commanders for that very reason), in order to force reluctant Americans into war with Germany. Throughout 1941, FDR implemented the remaining seven provocations . He then gauged Japanese reaction through intercepted and decoded communications intelligence originated by Japan’s diplomatic and military leaders. The island nation’s militarists used the provocations to seize control of Japan and organized their military forces for war against the U.S., Great Britain, and the Netherlands. The centerpiece – the Pearl Harbor attack – was leaked to the U.S. in January 1941. During the next 11 months, the White House followed the Japanese war plans through the intercepted and decoded diplomatic and military communications intelligence.

A Cloud Still Hangs Over
debbyski
by debbyski  12-3-2009    1
The families of the dead got an average of $2,200; the wounded got $550; a Dow spokeswoman explained, that amount “is plenty good for an Indian.” As Representative Frank Pallone of New Jersey observed in 2006, “In Bhopal, some of the world’s poorest people are being mistreated by one of the world’s richest corporations. The Indian government, fearful of scaring away foreign investors, has not pushed the issue with American authorities. Dow has used a kind of blackmail with the Indians; a 2006 letter from Andrew Liveris, the chief executive, to India’s ambassador to the United States asked for guarantees that Dow would not be held liable for the cleanup, and thanked him for his “efforts to ensure that we have the appropriate investment climate.”

Kangaroo Slashes Drowning Dog's Owner
foxyarse
by foxyarse  11-26-2009    2
"It was a shock at the start because it was a kangaroo, about 5ft high. They don't go around killing people. "Then, all of a sudden, I realised the first hit (he) gave me opened up a wide gash above my eye and blinded me." Mr Rickard said the onslaught left him "flailing away underwater, carrying a dog with a kangaroo ripping into me". "All I could do was just keep pushing for the bank and he was trying to push me under the water," he continued. The wounded man said he ended the battle by elbowing the beast in the throat. Kangaroos rarely attack humans, but will fight if they feel threatened.
