POPS Veterans Day 2009: Thank you
They are casualties of war… and as far as I’m concerned, Sergeant Kimberly Munley, who took their cowardly attacker down, is a veteran today. The terrorist enemy doesn’t have a formal chain of command that can sign an armistice, they don’t muster on clearly defined battlefields, and they’re quite happy to benefit from the efforts of deranged fanboys. If we don’t stand behind our professional soldiers, and give them the tools to do their jobs now, we will all become soldiers before this enemy is defeated. Somewhere in the world tomorrow, an American soldier will ring in the eleventh hour of the eleventh day with gunfire. Another will arrive home after an honorable tour of duty, perhaps passing brothers and sisters in arms saying farewell to their families. A mother’s tears will fall on a letter from the far side of the world. Old veterans will spend a beautiful afternoon watching children play beneath the flag they raised at Anzio, Guadalcanal, Incheon, or Khe Sanh.

POPSFor Veterans Day — Real Troop Support "According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, nearly 42 million American men and women have served during wartime. Nearly 1.2 million died while serving. Nearly 1.5 million were wounded. Since 9/11, more than 5,200 have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nearly 36,000 have been wounded — many have debilitating injuries that have changed their lives forever. We may debate the rightness or wrongness of various engagements, but we know that freedom comes at a steep price — and we honor those who have secured it for us."

POPS“Apocalypse: The Second World War” ~ Veterans Day November 11, 2009 remember the guys who have been fighting them in the sand, fighting them in the dust, fighting them in the mountains, and now fight on in the hospital wards. The Valour IT push is on, to give laptops to wounded servicemen. At the invitation of Cassandra at Villainous Company, whose Marine husband is forward deployed in Afghanistan, we’re with Team Marines this year. Pushing the Marines ahead is just the fun part of the drive. It all goes to everyone in all branches. Give as you can. Donate via Team Marines Apropos of all of the above, VC offers up a good quick read: "Marines though the Lens of History".

POPSAre Our Troops Getting the Best Weapons? There are tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of veterans far more qualified to opine on whether or not the M-4/M-16 family of small arms are the best that money can buy, but it doesn't take a great deal of qualification to suspect that the answer to this question is "no." The basic weapon design for the M-16/M-4 is over 40 years old. While there have been modifications and upgrades during its service lifetime, it has always been prone to failure in adverse conditions. The shorter M-4 carbine, with an abbreviated gas system, is also said to be less reliable than the longer barreled M-16. The XM-8 program developed a lighter, more reliable 5.56 weapon. The military canceled it, but civilians can get a semi-automatic version for themselves. There are also other, more reliable weapons being used in small quantities in the field, from the HK416 to the FN SCAR.

POPSVeteran End of Life Questions: Vets Referred to Hemlock Society (Video)
...there is a check list in the middle of the document that specifically asks questions about "What makes your life worth living?”. It is a checklist that doesn’t just include needing a feeding tube or being on permanent life support, the questions are absolutely, in my opinion, insane. These questions are being asked to all Veterans receiving treatment, including 20 year olds who have been severely wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan. I have listed all of the questions below so you can see for yourself: Click on link to view survey list of questions. http://maggiesnotebook.blogspot.com/2009/08/veteran-end-of-life-questions-vets.html These questions are followed by the questions below: “If you checked "worth living, but just barely" for more than one factor, would a combination of these factors make your life "not worth living?" If so, which factors? If you checked "not worth living," does this mean that you would rather die than be kept alive?

POPS D-Day, June 6th ~ Sixty-Five Years Ago Rod Stewart Helps D-Day Veterans Despite years of rumors that he is very...ugh...frugal, and despite the fact that his own son called him "very cheap," rocker Rod Stewart has offered up £7,500 (a little over $11,000 USA dollars) to send veterans to the 65th commemoration of D-Day in France. The Daily Mail: Rod Stewart led a roll call of politicians, celebrities and generous members of the public backing the Daily Mail's campaign to send the D-Day veterans to Normandy. The 64-year-old singer said he was 'outraged' the Government had no plans to send an official delegation and offered £7,500 to send 15 Essex veterans to France in June. He said: 'These men sacrificed everything and we owe them this. My only condition is I'd like to meet them and talk to them as I'd be fascinated to hear about how they landed on their beaches.' Stewart's grandfather was decorated in the First World War, and his father and two brothers also served.

POPS NO CLASS!!! to veterans charities. In office, Bush hugely increased funding for veterans programs and worked relentlessly to improve the lot of ordinary troops. It would be interesting to know how much of his own money Barack Obama has given to veterans' charities over the years. I'd hazard a guess: zero. Obama's incessant attacks on the Bush administration tell us nothing about former President Bush, but a great deal about Barack Obama: the man has no class.

POPSPresident's plan to charge wounded veterans for treatment This plan to make the VA profitable is tapping the wrong group of people. Instead of charging veterans to pay for their medical care let's redirect money from self-serving special interest groups and frivolous earmarks to cover VA expenses. All of this money comes from one source: our tax dollars. I for one would much rather see my money go towards helping victims of governments’ obsession with war than to protect turtles during mating season. Priorities have gotten so tweaked out of proportion with what is considered important in this country that there is more value placed on ‘things’ than on people. Our veterans are the single most important 'special interest' group America has. Let’s not compound their injuries by making them pay for the wounds suffered because this country feels the need to flex its military muscle.

POPSWhite House Declines to Explain Plan to Make Veterans Pay for War Injuries
American Legion Commander David K. Rehbein said in a statement. “He says he is looking to generate $540 million by this method, but refused to hear arguments about the moral and government-avowed obligations that would be compromised by it.” Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander Glen M. Gardner Jr. came away from the meeting with a different impression, however. "The president told us that he would not go through with the third-party billing proposal if he felt the veterans' community didn't approve of it," Gardner said in a statement. "We made our opposition clearly known." Currently, the VA covers the full cost of medical ailments related to military service and bills third-party insurers for non-service related injuries. Veteran groups fear that shifting more of the cost to private insurance will do several things: 1) drive up premiums for veterans; 2) make it more difficult for injured veterans to find and retain health insurance;

POPSPresident's Plan to Charge Wounded Heroes for Treatment? I am sorry President Obama - this is just NOT acceptable. Anyone who has served in the military to protect this great country of ours deserves to be treated through the VA and should not have to worry about paying for medical coverage EVER if they have service related injury - the VA should take care of that. This is especially true of all the men&women returning from Iraq&Afghanistan. We owe that to them as citizen of this country. You want $540 million, take it from the SOB's of AiG Execs and others that have screwed our country and are nothing but cowards. Do NOT take the money from those who are true hereo's and served this country with honor. Please Mr. President - realize the importance here.

POPSMillionaire brings 700 poor people to inauguration Rooms at Marriott on parade route, clothes for people's ball. Chosen from around the nation, including people who sacrificed to house others after Katrina, kids from a Southside Chicago school who'd never been out of their neighborhood. "If I can follow in the footsteps he took ..." A great story!

POPSAussie killed serving with the Rifles Billy Connelly's act includes the statement about women... if they were leaders there would be no more war. WHAT??? The faggots in the Labour leadership who continually eulogise over the death of brave young people never get nearer to the action than behind a battalion of brave young people. My MP is a hero and expert on terrorism because he has been..."within two hundred yards of a terrorist bomb." How that must be a comfort to Stuart Nash's family and the thousands of wounded veterans he now represents (sic). No thanks will ever be enough.

POPSA Hero's Homecoming: SOCOM's Black Dagger Jumpers Brought The House Keys The house was built by Operation Coming Home, a group of military veterans who are now real estate agents and home builders. All the material and labor were donated. The mission of "Operation Coming Home" is to provide injured war veterans with free houses that they call "Hero Homes." Bozik was the first recipient. The home was built with special features to make Bozik's life easier, including radiant heat floors, easy-access cabinets, a sprinkler system and appliances with special hinges and levers that make opening doors easier. Bozik and his pregnant wife were moving in Monday, because Oct. 27 is his "Alive Day" – the anniversary of the day he came out of coma from his injuries. It happened here, and with your help, it will happen again. Update:One of Joey and Jayme's biggest supporters is miblogger Blackfive, who has an extensive trove of articles about what they gone through to get to where they are today.
