It was the largest war ever fought, the largest single event in history. Other than the black death of the Middle Ages, it's the worst thing we know of that has ever happened to the human race. Its aftereffects surround us in countless intertwining ways… So what did the people I asked know about the war? Nobody could tell me the first thing about it. Once they got past who won they almost drew a blank. All they knew were those big totemic names -- Pearl Harbor, D day, Auschwitz, Hiroshima -- whose unfathomable reaches of experience had been boiled down to an abstract atrocity. The rest was gone… I think what my little survey really demonstrates is how vast the gap is between the experience of war and the experience of peace.

Bit by bit, America's autonomous power is being taken away. The Boston Globe provides a public relations gloss by calling these treaties a means of fulfilling "Obama's vision of global cooperation." This is one view, I suppose. Another view would be that our policies will be tied down by these treaties -- and we will be judged by international bureaucrats and held to their interpretation of what our obligations are under the treaties. International treaties require only Senate approval. Obama will begin with treaties designed to achieve his vision of a world without nuclear weapons. But that is just the beginning. Efforts will begin to bind America to the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea....This will hurt our nation's ability to mine the world's seas for oil and gas....

Did I -- and others on the left -- do the same? We are weary, weary of war. Obama is moving too slow for most of us -- but he needs to know we are with him and we stand beside him as he attempts to turn eight years of sheer madness around. Who could do that in nine months? Superman? Thor? Mitch McConnell? Instead of waiting to see what the president is going to do, we all need to be pro-active and push the agenda that we want to see enacted. on't abandon the best hope we've had in our lifetime for change. More: These desires and questions don't change just because your parents are from different racial backgrounds. And they certainly don't get easier if your parents are from different faiths, different parts of the world, different ... you name it. So Mr. Bardwell is just simply ridiculous if he thinks he's thinking about the children. Yes, children go through tough times, but we are resilient. Even more important, we learn from our challenges -- and I think we become better people. Because I am of mixed race, I cannot simply stick to stereotypes of how one racial or ethnic group behave. I must look at each individual independent of what I think -- and I think that assessment happens when people look at me and try to figure out what I'm all about. This process of not jumping to conclusions, of really viewing people on some deeper level, makes me a better person. And I think it could work for you, Mr. Bardwell.
