Hiking Into History: England’s Ancient Ridgeway Trail
Lexica
by Lexica  10-31-2009
More: The full 87 miles of the official Ridgeway National Trail can easily be divided into shorter segments, depending on time available. It can be cut more or less in half, by deciding to walk only the older, original western section, which passes all the great prehistoric sites. Day hikes, and half-days centered on the Uffington White Horse, or Wayland’s Smithy, or the Avebury Stone Circles, can easily be devised by studying the map. The trail’s excellent Web site (www.nationaltrail.co.uk/ridgeway) is full of advice, and possibilities for accommodations and meals.

Perhaps the Coolest iPhone App Yet
merrie
by merrie  10-28-2009
If you have an iPhone 3GS or Android device you can install the Layar app for free and then search for "recovery" or "sunlight" within Layar to find this layer. The layer works best near large cities where you are most likely to find recovery contracts, below is an example of what it looks like on the streets of Washington DC. This data is taken from the recovery.gov Where Is The Money Going? map which provides a KML file containing all recipient reported Contracts. As of October 30th this data will be updated with the final contract, grants, and loans. How We Made It If you're a developer you might be interested in how we made this. Fortunately Layar makes it quite easy and we've taken a further step to make it even easier if you're already using Django. http://sunlightlabs.com/blog/2009/recoverygov-contracts-your-phone/

sahara
by sahara  10-15-2009
MSF operates independently of any political, military, or religious agendas. Medical teams conduct evaluations on the ground to determine a population's medical needs before opening programs. The key to MSF’s ability to act independently in response to a crisis is its independent funding. Eighty-nine percent of MSF's overall funding (and 100 percent of MSF-USA's funding) comes from private sources, not governments. In 2006, MSF had more than three million individual donors and private funders worldwide. MSF is neutral. The organization does not take sides in armed conflicts, provides care on the basis of need alone, and pushes for increased independent access to victims of conflict as required under international humanitarian law. At times, MSF may speak out publicly in an effort to bring a forgotten crisis to public attention, to alert the public to abuses occurring beyond the headlines, or to challenge the diversion of humanitarian aid for political interests.

As long as I can remember, there’s been a world map hanging in my grandmother’s kitchen. When I called to let her know I was off to Liberia soon, she was quiet for a minute and then yelped when she found the small west African country — just about the size of Tennessee — located between Cote d’Ivorie, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Over the coming few weeks we both learned a lot more about Liberia.

Quakes Follow Typhoons, Pacific Plate Swarms with 6.0+ Shakers
blueridge
by blueridge  10-7-2009    2
A violent 24 hour period of Pacific activity which followed an already violent week. 10/7 Breaking news--The Vanuatu region quakes have triggered Tsunami alert for as far as New Zealand. Earthquakes also followed on the heels of the major typhoons in both the Philippines and Taiwan, specifically. An article from Science Daily in June said this regarding typhoons and quakes: ScienceDaily (June 12, 2009) — Scientists have made the surprising finding that typhoons trigger slow earthquakes, at least in eastern Taiwan. Slow earthquakes are non-violent fault slippage events that take hours or days instead of a few brutal seconds to minutes to release their potent energy But what we have observed recently is not "slow non-violent quakes", but major ones following typhoons. There must be another reason for this strange coincidence in the Philippines and Taiwan in particular.

Summits of Folly
merrie

But the problem with this euphemistic approach to disarmament, as Lippmann noticed, is that it shifts the onus from the countries that can't be trusted with nuclear weapons to those that can. Is Nicolas Sarkozy, with his force de frappe, about to start World War III? Probably not, though he has the means to do so. Should Mr. Obama join hands with Iran and the Arab world in pushing for Israel's nuclear disarmament, on the view that if only the Jewish state would set the right example its enemies would no longer want to wipe it off the map? If that's what the president believes, he should say so publicly, especially since he's offering the same general prescription for America's nuclear deterrent. Of course what the administration wants is to set the right mood music for its upcoming talks with Iran. Mr. Obama would be better served having a chat with Moammar Gadhafi, who will be seated just a few chairs away at the Security Council: . . .

Get Out of Jail Free: Monopoly's Hidden Maps
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-21-2009    1
more (at source): Of all the tools in a military-grade escape kit, the most critical item was the map. But paper maps proved too fragile and cumbersome, said Debbie Hall, a cataloguer in the map room at the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England. For hundreds of years, even before World War II, silk was the material of choice for military maps, Hall said, because it wouldn't tear or dissolve in water as easily as paper and was light enough to stuff into a boot or cigarette packet. Unlike maps printed on paper, silk maps also wouldn't rustle and attract the attention of enemy guards, she said.
