Penalized At Work For Being A Mom
ljsdesign
by ljsdesign  10-7-2009
Here's one piece of irony to consider. Research has shown that employers actually prefer fathers to childless men. Unlike working mothers, they are perceived to be more stable.

Army V Politicians
notareargunner
by notareargunner  8-20-2009
Read Guido and his excellent expose of this corrupt inept Labour government. At a moment in time where the Armed Forces are bleeding to death, billions in equipment missing from stores, Labour cannot get helicoptors, proper weapons and sufficient manpower into the battle field for the Force to succeed. Yet politicians are still bemoaning their corruption being brought to public account. Give them all my years in the trenches and listen to the useless bastard whine then. Always think before you vote. Your politicians are responsible for the lads deaths as they change the role of the Forces. Initially it was to destroy the Axis of Evil, now it's womens rights???? Come on Parliament, start listening.

SPECIAL PREVIEW: The Abandonment of Democracy
merrie
by merrie  6-24-2009    1
. . . should set aside the goal of democracy in Afghanistan” had prompted that country’s foreign minister to make “an impassioned appeal for continued U.S. support for an elected government.” In early April, former New York Times correspondent Joel Brinkley summed up the administration’s initial performance: Neither President Obama nor Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has even uttered the word democracy in a manner related to democracy promotion since taking office more than two months ago. The State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor has put out 30 public releases, so far, and not one of them has discussed democracy promotion. Democracy, it seems, is banished from the Obama administration’s public vocabulary.

In ICE Detention = No abortion rights even for those raped!
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  2-23-2009
For two months, while Maria awaited her detention hearing, Alvarado says they met about once every two weeks to talk about the ordeal. Maria asked about her options for ending the pregnancy. “I can’t do it,” Alvarado remembers her saying. “The baby’s face will just remind me of him—the man who did this.” But Maria ran into a practice limiting the reproductive rights of ICE detainees. For pregnant women in immigration detention facilities, it is virtually impossible to obtain an abortion. According to Bassett, in fact, “Preliminary records indicated that during fiscal year ’08 and ’09 to date, no detainee has had a pregnancy terminated while in ICE custody.” Not a single one.

When I read stories like this, I'm still amazed that women are still so eager to give up their lives, because some man said she has to. as he reads a book women had no hand in writing.

A new set of health laws that could be proposed by the government sometime in the next few weeks has women's health activists steaming. If the laws are implemented, they claim, women will have a harder time getting access to contraception.

Women
dulios

With the horror of the recent "honor" killing in Georgia as the backdrop, I'm inspired to remind everyone that women die at the hands of male family members every day in the US. In fact, 4 times a day. I'm tired of the Right acting like they really care about women and gender equality. The only mention of women in the 2004 Republican platform is their insistence that if a woman gets pregnant, by law she'll stay that way until delivery. I went to a number of right wing websites and typed the words "violence against women" into their search engines. If any stories were listed at all, they were about honor killings in the Muslim world. The Right wrap their "concern" for women in the cloak of anti-Islamic rhetoric concerning honor killings and are dumb, deaf, and blind to all else. Enough. Islam is not the problem. Patriarchy is.

Gender row over Korean banknotes
spherepet
by spherepet  11-8-2007
South Korea's decision to use the image of a 16th Century symbol of motherhood on one of its banknotes has sparked a row about gender stereotyping. Her face will adorn a new 50,000 won note when it appears in early 2009. But women's rights groups said the choice merely served to reinforce sexist stereotypes. But womens' campaigners said her selection bolstered the idea that mothers should stay at home and devote their lives to their children's education.
