POPSAs "Sesame" Turns 40, "Oz" Turns 70
Recently, much has been written about the 40th anniversary of "Sesame Street." As those of us in the U.S. look ahead to Thanksgiving, many will be seated around the television watching what has become an annual tradition in many households - "The Wizard Of Oz." Originally published in 1900 as "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," by L. Frank Baum and W.W. Denslow, MGM made Oz into a motion picture in 1939, some 70 years ago. Since then, “Oz” has achieved worldwide fame and commercial success through its annual showings (it was actually a commercial flop at the time of release). What is perhaps a little-known fact, however, is that any references to being "over the rainbow" are nowhere to be found in the original work. The song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was written by E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, who was famous for another Depression-era song, "Brother Can You Spare A Dime?" Like the lyrics to “Brother,” the Depression-era times clearly informed the lyrics for “Rainbow,” the

POPSGallery: It's Alive! Nick & Vanessa Scare Us Back-from-the-dead couple Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo threw a private Halloween bash (put together with party planner Marley Majcher), which was monstrously successful. At least, at least if the guest list is any indication. Joining Mr. & Mrs. Stein (see above) at their bash were Kate Beckinsale, Tommy Lee, Stacy Keibler, Kara DiGuardi and Wilmer Valderrama. At one point Hilton, who was dressed like Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz (as was boyfriend Doug Reinhardt), grabbed the microphone and announced to partygoers, "This is the sickest Halloween party in the world, I love you guys!"

POPS The $cience of Harry Potter The museum defends the intellectual value of what is sure to be a cash cow of an exhibit by noting that the 200 movie props it features offer a window into innovation. “You see these props and think, ‘How did they do that?’ It is an inspiration for people to explore what it took to create these movie worlds,” said Paul Fontaine, vice president of education at the museum. And that inspiration is essential to scientific innovation, he says. “When you think of the foundations of science, it is creativity; what it takes to transform fantasy to the screen. We hope people take away those foundation skills,” Fontaine said. The museum is home to displays about DNA, electricity, astronomy and anatomy. But some area academics agree a re-creation of Hogwarts is not out of place. Andrew Cohen, physics professor at Boston University, references popular movies in his lectures to make complex theories tangible. So, could Hagrid’s Care of Magical Creatures

POPSCriticizing Fox News isn't "Nixonian." But Fox News is
In a sense, Fox News Channel has never been able to overcome its nature as the offspring of Ailes, notoriously one of the angriest, toughest Republican consultants in politics, and Rupert Murdoch, the ruthless mogul whose political abuse of his news outlets became legendary long before he entered the cable news business. The objective for Ailes, as for Murdoch, is not fairness or balance; the objective is always to win by whatever means necessary. That includes marketing himself and his employees as high-minded truth-seekers and innocent victims of snotty liberalism -- much in the mode of old Nixon. The list of similar offenses is almost endless and, as it grows every day, selecting the most egregious examples can be challenging. Back in 2004, the wife of Carl Cameron, the channel's top campaign reporter, worked in the Bush reelection campaign, and Cameron himself posted material mocking Democratic nominee John Kerry. Over the years, the channel's news director John Moody has sent d

POPSFilms today, books tomorrow? by Mariam Mokhtar "But the scariest thing is how the Puteri Umno motion was passed without debate. An important call such as this should have warranted a little more scrutiny. If the Government were to accede to their request, then it is all Malaysians, who will suffer. Not just Muslims. Movies like the Harry Potter films will not be screened. Lord of the Rings, and even The Wizard of Oz will have to be banned. And what about science fiction films? Alien, Predator and others, may be full of horror, or lack unexplained traditional elements, and thus, will not fit in any religious teaching." In short - ban fucking everything. Would that make 'em happy?
