At what point do you find the perfect balance between rules that must not be broken and soldiers or marines that must be cared for? These are hard decisions they are being forced to make-but I think it is important to say these are decision they are forced into. Everyone in Iraq right now is forked, involved in a chess game where they must lose one of two crucial items. It is very hard to leave intact. I will also agree with Jason that I find it hard to believe that his XO wouldn't completely understand that Marines are often quite happy to use a nuke instead of a flyswatter, if given the option. Army is much the same, in many ways. Few really consider the cost of the rounds. It's often a pleasure simply to shoot.

POPSWinter Soldiers Hit the Streets A late April poll conducted by CNN/Opinion Research Corp. found that nearly three-quarters (68 percent) of respondents opposed the Iraq war. The strategy of the regional IVAW groups is clearly meant to capitalise on the growing opposition to the occupation of Iraq among the U.S. public. Christopher Diggins, a psychotherapist who attended the demonstration, reflected the feelings of many — that this strategy is important. “This tactic is better because you have to get the community involved,” Diggins told IPS. “You have to have community awareness and support.” “I want to show my solidarity for vets who are against the war, because it is the only way this war is going to stop,” he added. “It’s hard to have the war if nobody is going to fight.”

POPSWinter Soldiers testimony I've watched too much of this today. But it needs to be heard. There is some extremely graphic violence shown that some of the soldiers managed to capture on film.

POPSIraq Winter Soldier Hearings: Victory for Independent Media The four days of vets’ testimony revealed the struggle these young Americans are waging to regain their humanity and morality after having been transformed into callous war-fighters who largely dehumanized Iraqis as a people - not just “the enemy” or combatants. An objective observer hearing the testimony would have good reason to wonder if U.S. troops - given the often gratuitous and racist brutality, and the mistreatment of women, children and the elderly — can ever be a solution in Iraq. On panel after panel, the veterans offered heartfelt “apologies to the Iraqi people” for what our country has done to their country. I saw a vet rip up the commendation he’d received from Gen. David Petraeus, denouncing the general as a cheerleader who put his own ambitions above his duty to the troops and to the truth. These lines of Paul Simon's recall to Vietnam veterans the causes for which we went to fight in Vietnam and the outrages we were part of because the men who sent us had long ago forgotten the meaning of the words. Tom Paine wrote, "Those are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will in this crisis shrink from the service of his country, but he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." The vets will testify in panels arranged by the combat units in which they fought so that it will be easy to see the policy of each division and thus the larger policy. Each day there will be a special panel during the hours of testimony. Today, a panel on weaponry will explain the use and effects of some of the vicious and illegal weapons used in Vietnam. POPSWar Veterans to share "truth" about Iraq Hmm, Wonder how Bushie will handle this one. These courageous men & women are our hope for the future. They went to defend their country. When they saw the true horrors occurring, they realized that it was wrong, and have the courage to stand up and say so. They are thinkers, decision makers and have personal moral codes. They don't blindly "follow- orders" or succumb to the propaganda spoon fed to them. I applaud each and every one of them.
