Although Ignored By the Media-- Palin's Accomplishments Were Extensive
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 1:44 AM    2
We also slowed the rate of government growth, we worked with the Legislature to save billions of dollars for the future, and I made no lobbyist friends with my hundreds of millions of dollars in budget vetoes... but living beyond our means today is irresponsible for tomorrow. We took government out of the dairy business and put it back into private-sector hands - where it should be. We provided unprecedented support for education initiatives, and with the right leadership, finally filled long-vacant public safety positions. We built a sub-Cabinet on Climate Change and took heat from Outside special interests for our biologically-sound wildlife management for abundance. We broke ground on the new prison. And we made common sense conservative choices to eliminate personal luxuries like the jet, the chef, the junkets... the entourage. And the Lt. Governor and I said "no" to our pay raises. So much success in this first term - and with this success I am proud to take credit...

Report Shows Greater Peril for World's Threatened Animals and Plants
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-2-2009    2
The newest report also includes assessments of 845 species of corals. Already more than a quarter are considered threatened, with climate change added to the list of threats they face. Still, IUCN cautions that the health of marine life could be worse than expected, as relatively little is known about biodiversity in the oceans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIJHaQ8EGn0

Oakland is 4th greenest city in US (San Fran is #2, Berkeley #7)
Lexica
by Lexica  6-30-2009
More: Since there is as yet no official criteria set by the Environmental Protection Agency for determining a city's "greeness", Mother Nature Network considered several key areas to measure the effectiveness of a municipality's efforts at carbon footprint reduction. These included air and water quality, efficient recycling and management of waste, percentage of LEED certified buildings, acres of land devoted to green space, use of renewable energy, and easy access to green products and services.

Overconsumption? Ecological Debt?
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  6-28-2009
We are literally eating ourselves out of house and home. World Wildlife Fund presented this write up to show how the world’s current consumption habit is leading towards ecological collapse. Can this trend be changed? Yes. We can all do our part by living within our means. It's not about depriving ourselves but practicing responsible consumption. Steps to take to reduce our impact: http://www.panda.org/about_our_earth/all_publications/living_planet_report/reduce_your_debt/

Imagine a World Without Fish
papananook
by papananook  6-26-2009    1
Quotes from the Makers of the Film We must stop thinking of our oceans as a food factory and realize that they thrive as a huge and complex marine environment. We must act now to protect the sea from rampant overfishing so that there will be fish in the sea for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. -- Charles Clover, the book's author Overfishing is the great environmental disaster that people haven't heard about." A recent global conference about bluefin tuna stocks saw almost no media coverage in the U.S. We hope this film really sounds the alarm. We can fix this problem starting right now. -- Producer George Duffield Reading the book The End of the Line changed my life and what I eat. I hope the film will do the same for others. -- Producer Claire Lewis
