POPSWhat Obama Might Look Like If He Read Polls And Michael Barone's Column
He had already realized that his sentiments were leading him away from the Whigs and toward the new Republican party, and in 1856 he became a Republican. He quickly came to the fore in the party as a moderate opponent of slavery who could win both the abolitionists and the conservative free-staters, and at the Republican national convention of 1856 he was prominent as a possible vice presidential candidate. Two years later he was nominated by the Republican party to oppose Douglas in the Illinois senatorial race. Accepting the nomination (in a speech delivered at Springfield on June 16), Lincoln gave a ringing declaration in support of the Union: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." The campaign that followed was impressive. Lincoln challenged Douglas to a series of debates (seven were held), in which he delivered masterful addresses for the Union and for the democratic idea. He was not an abolitionist, but he regarded slavery as an injustice and an evil .....

POPSGates Bars Torture Photos' Release
The administration first sought to change FOIA in June, shortly after deciding to contest a ruling by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals that ordered the photos' release. The resulting bill, championed by Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.), was specifically designed to nullify the effect of the appeals court's ruling. Since the court had ruled that the photos couldn't be withheld under an existing FOIA exemption, the Obama administration simply asked Congress to carve out a new exemption. Despite objections from liberal members of the House, Congress obliged. The new exemption's requirements are stunningly lax. In order to withhold the photos, Gates simply had to certify, as he did in the court filing, that "public disclosure of these photographs would endanger citizens of the United States, members of the United States Armed Forces, or employees of the United States Government deployed outside the United States." In other words, their release had to endanger someone, somewhere. And i

POPSWikipedia Will Limit Changes on Articles About Living People
“We are no longer at the point that it is acceptable to throw things at the wall and see what sticks,” said Michael Snow, a lawyer in Seattle who is the chairman of the Wikimedia board. “There was a time probably when the community was more forgiving of things that were inaccurate or fudged in some fashion — whether simply misunderstood or an author had some ax to grind. There is less tolerance for that sort of problem now.” The new editing procedures, which have been applied to the entire German-language version of Wikipedia during the last year, are certain to be a topic of discussion this weekwhen Wikipedia’s volunteer editors gather in Buenos Aires for their annual Wikimania conference. Much of the agenda is focused on the implications of the encyclopedia’s size and influence. Although Wikipedia has prevented anonymous users from creating new articles for several years now, the new flagging system crosses a psychological Rubicon. It will divide Wikipedia’s contributors into t

POPSSource of Complete Poems, Books and More A Ballad of Two Knights by Sara Teasdale From Helen of Troy and Other Poems Part III Two knights rode forth at early dawn A-seeking maids to wed, Said one, "My lady must be fair, With gold hair on her head." Then spake the other knight-at-arms: "I care not for her face, But she I love must be a dove For purity and grace." And each knight blew upon his horn And went his separate way, And each knight found a lady-love Before the fall of day. But she was brown who should have had The shining yellow hair -- I ween the knights forgot their words Or else they ceased to care. For he who wanted purity Brought home a wanton wild, And when each saw the other knight I ween that each knight smiled. This entry is from Wikisource, the free library of source texts. POPSPlus ça change...Ripsaw MS1....US Army UGV Application "The more things change, the more things stay the same" ... The intent was to develop a lightweight vehicle capable of crossing trenches just as the heavier, Brit-designed tanks we used did. But we wanted lighter, faster, cheaper. The same holy grail we've been chasing with tanks ever since we slapped painted canvas on a horse. The Skeleton Tank achieved this objective by building the lozenge shape with... pretty much standard plumbing pipe and fittings, and hung an armored box in the middle armed with a machine gun.. All that air was considered a feature, not a bug. Less stuff for the bad guys to hit and cause internal spalling and ricocheting about in the fighting compartment. Of course, it also meant fewer weapons. She was engined with two 50 horse engines giving a breath-taking speed of 5mph. Lookout Indy, here I come!
