POPSBites of passage Over the course of the past two or three decades, however, the Asian tiger mosquito has become considerably, prodigiously more mobile. It has circled the planet, emerging in Trinidad in 1983; Mexico in 1988; France in 1999; Cameroon in 2000; Nicaragua, Greece, Israel and Switzerland in 2003. It has colonised North and South America, Africa, and Europe, until it has become a great nuisance in Brazil, Albania, Nigeria, Mexico and Italy – “the most invasive mosquito in the world”, a team of researchers wrote in 2007, in the journal Vector-Borne Zoonotic Disease. The mosquito from the Southeast Asian jungle is also now a great nuisance in Trenton, New Jersey – the greatest present-day mosquito nuisance in a wetland state whose history is written in waves of mosquito infestation.

POPSToo Many Snakes Well, he we go again. People if you don't want your pet when it grows up, don't buy it at all. If you must get rid of it, have it euthanized . People who just can't don't have the heart to have it killed are the real problem. In some cases it's just plain laziness and/or ignorance. For instance the proverbial kittens off the bridge. But Pythons etc. in the river? Come on. These life forms do so much damage to indigenous fauna and flora it's hard to calculate. I'm thinking better laws and enforcement on bringing these darn things into the country in the first place. Comments? Please...I'd like to hear more from you.

POPSDanger in the Nursery How many links in the food chain can we live without? Birds are more than just something to look at and listen to. They eat insects whose numbers could devastate food crops if not kept in check. Loss of habitat reduces a number of various mammals, reptiles, fish, etc, and each loss brings us closer to our own demise. But, hey, as long as oil companies keep making money, as long as governments keep making tax money on it and we get to ride around in our personal vehicles, who cares right?
