Of course, none of the aforementioned Obama initiatives, or the collection and redistribution of wealth to fund them, is authorized by our Constitution (unless of course you subscribe to the so-called "Living Constitution" as amended by judicial diktat). Therefore, if these schemes are not authorized by our Constitution, then we have an outlaw government, and if we have an outlaw government, then by what authority does that government assess and collect taxes? Our Constitution does authorize Congress to enact -- defense appropriations. The Senate version of the NDAA (S.1390) with its 216 amendments is now being debated. POPS The Flat Tax Is Not Flat and the FairTax Is Not Fair Neither the Flat Tax nor the FairTax is a step toward the libertarian goal of substantially reducing or abolishing the income tax; neither tax-reform plan is an incremental step toward lower overall taxes. They could be, however, if their promoters recognized that the problem is taxation itself, not the tax code. All they have done is shift the debate from how much of the wealth of the American people the federal government confiscates to the manner in which the wealth is confiscated. We don't need compassionate tax reform that makes people feel better about paying their taxes; we need radical tax reform that reduces, cuts, eliminates, and abolishes taxes without replacing them with other taxes. As I have quoted Congressman Ron Paul on many occasions, "The real issue is total spending by government, not tax reform."

It understands when a politician is far more interested in the redistribution of wealth than in the creation of it. Worse still, he uses beguiling rhetoric to dupe his audience and to camouflage the enormous disparity between what he says and the aspirations ostensibly entertained.

POPS Why Socialism Fails Let me begin with a Marxian fantasy, with goods moving “from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.” Such a system could actually work if God ( yes, that God ) served as the arbiter of inequities. So long as the participants trusted God to meet their needs properly, and to satisfy justice in the long haul, people might be content with the rewards they received. God would see to it that everybody was working in the role where they were best suited, people would expect their rewards to be according to their input (because God is just, you see,) and what inequalities exist could be explained away as a temporary necessity for God to achieve His inscrutable purposes, to be leveled appropriately later. Socialism attempts to produce a system like this artificially, by substituting the State for God. However, if participants will not invest the same confidence in the State that they would invest in God, . . .

Republic is a complex and profound morality tale in which we can see, if darkly, the reflection of our own republic.
