Climategate: You should be steamed
dl211
by dl211  Yesterday 2:53 PM    1
Third, and most important, skeptics believe that climate models are grossly overpredicting future warming from rising concentrations of carbon dioxide. We are being told that numerical models that cannot make accurate 5- to 10-day forecasts can be simplified and run forward for 100 years with results so reliable you can impose an economic disaster on the U.S. and the world. The revelation of Climategate occurs at a time when the accuracy of the climate models is being seriously questioned. Over the last decade Earth's temperature has not warmed, yet every model (there are many) predicted a significant increase in global temperatures for that time period. If the climate models cannot get it right for the past 10 years, why should we trust them for the next century?

Bacteria growing in our soil
bhgfarms
by bhgfarms  1-1-2010
This is a huge thing for my family. My little girl who is now 3 came down with Ecoli poisoning 2 years ago. Her kidneys shut down and she had to have multiple blood transfusions..we almost lost her. She is now a healthy and normal little girl. But after much research we could not find a source..we were vegetarian at the time. The practice in our area was/is to put human manure on the fields! It is very well know that human waste is full of the drugs that everyone takes. They can clean the bacteria out of the water but not the drugs! Now if a farmer puts cow poop on his veggie field or chicken or human..they are all full of by products of extreme drugs and antibiotics..and these will make their way into the food supply. The only way to stop this is by many people taking a stand! We are headed for self sustainability..growing our own as much as possible!

An Open Letter to Michael Mann, Disgraced Victim of Climategate
merrie
by merrie  12-18-2009    2
If you possessed but a modicum of honesty, you would simply admit your crimes. Oh -- are you familiar with Archimedes? When ice melts, water levels actually fall. It has to do with displacement and the density of ice versus water. Claiming that sea levels will rise because glaciers melt is either ignorant or fraudulent. Can you pass that along to your buddy-slash-current Science Czar John "Mass Sterilization" Holdren? He's actually been wrong about, well, pretty much everything over the years. Maybe you could help him out. Mr. Mann, the best thing you could do would be to come clean and seek forgiveness. Such an act would be both humbling and liberating. You should try it. It's an option that's always available. And it's never too late to free yourself. Would you agree that humility and contrition are noble endeavors? Steel Buildings - Kits And Plans
devidmark
by devidmark  12-17-2009
Steel is certainly becoming the metal of choice when it comes to designing and constructing buildings of all shapes and sizes. The main reason for this is that steel is one of the most durable materials available, and it has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of all building metals. This essentially means that less steel is needed to erect a building because of it's strength and durability, which also means that there is a savings in construction costs.

The Most Surprising Results of Global Warming

.....stand a better chance at having offspring that survive and thus pass on their genetic information, thereby ultimately changing the genetic profile of their entire population. 4. Shrinking Specimens The shift to the small seems to be happening on the scale of whole communities as well as individual animals. 3. Speedier Satellites molecules in the upper atmosphere collide less frequently and tend to radiate their energy away, cooling the air around them. With more carbon dioxide up there, more cooling occurs, causing the air to settle. Thus, the atmosphere is less dense and creates less drag on satellites 2. Rebounding Mountains the Alps and other mountain ranges have experienced a gradual growth spurt thanks to the melting of the glaciers 1. Forest Fire Frenzy In western states over the past few decades, more wildfires have blazed across the countryside Scientists have correlated the rampant blazes with warmer temperatures and earlier snowmelt

Compost Pile Friends
adosuzano
by adosuzano  11-4-2009
they may not look nice but they are big helpers (most of the time). However, if you are concerned about the food web in your compost pile "breaking out," try the following tips: 1. Create a barrier by spreading a line of wood ash (not barbecue ash because of fat residues) or crushed egg shells around your compost pile. This will keep the activity contained within the pile. 2. A similar, but more lethal technique, is to sink small margarine containers full of stale beer, molasses and water, or yeast and water in the ground around the compost pile. Unsuspecting slugs, sow bugs, and earwigs will be attracted to the liquid, crawl inside, and drown. Earwigs can be sprayed with a solution of one tablespoon of liquid soap detergent combined with one quart of water. This will kill the earwigs that are doing damage and spare the helpful bugs that are eating dead organic material. (information from California Integrated Waste Management Board)

Sperm Whale Classified Carbon Neutral
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  10-29-2009
Prior analysis of whale carbon dioxide emissions attributes 25 percent of carbon dioxide emissions total to the animals in the Southern Ocean region. Subsequent computation lowers the whales’ carbon dioxide emissions estimate to 0.3 percent, which is equivalent to 17 million tons of carbon a year. Lavery and team explain that there are low levels of iron in the Southern Ocean, and the sperm whales each contribute about 10 grams of iron to the surface. Since the iron comes from the whales’ waste material, it takes the form of liquid plumes, effectively acting as a fertilizer and encouraging growth of plankton. Depending on the exact values and environmental conditions, sperm whales can then be classified “either a net carbon sink or as carbon-neutral,” Discovery writes.

I live without cash - and I manage just fine.
mrobert
by mrobert  10-28-2009
I understand his point of view - but there have to be better solutions. We can't all just go into hibernation. And of course, detractors of this plan will say that the caravan and laptop etc. wouldn't be there for him if we were all sitting in his position - who would manufacture them and how? He is very right about the disconnect between creation and purchase of products though - and contaminating the environment. All other animals on this planet understand that the environment is their only connection to life on this planet..... there must a solution for human beings too.

Where in the World is Global Warming a Priority?
billpar
by billpar  10-26-2009
Sure, there would be a huge transfer of wealth from the developed nations to developing nations, but that’s not what Torethy Frank wants. She says, “There is too much corruption in the government and it goes in people’s pockets. Give the money directly to the people for businesses so we can support ourselves without having to rely on the government.” As David Kreutzer mentions in his Politico chat wrap, there much faster and much less expensive ways to adapt to climate change than trying to change the temperature by capping greenhouse gas emissions. Mosquito nets and attacking breeding grounds of mosquitoes and building levees to protect against potentially rising sea levels are all much cheaper but dramatically more effective than signing on to something that would prohibit these countries to develop.
