Wasted Intelligence

It is a matter of the judicious use of praise and condemnation (particularly directed towards children) we can promote a love of learning and an aversion to being an ignorant fool. In particular, we can promote a love of learning and the wonder and awe of the real world, and a simple aversion to wasting one’s day. I'm guilty, guilty, guilty.

Zygor Guides Review at Multiply.com
robbby40
by robbby40   7-16-2008
This review of ZygorS 1 TO 70 Leveling Guide supplies some nice links to other sites and articles that review the guide. The site also gives a review. Basically giving it a huge thumbs up of it's own. It outlines the some of the drawbacks that hinder peoples attempts to power level 1 to 70 and then explains how Zygor Guides address's these stumbling blocks. One of the factors that the review focus's on is the fact that so many people have to alt-tab out of the game to aquire the answers to they're questions. Meaning that a huge chunk of game time is wasted. This is where a power leveler and your average joe player differs. The power leveler spends every ounce of his play time in game and this is where Zygors 1 to 70 alliance and horde leveling guide, out shines the other guides. It is totally in game, meaning that you have a step by step guide that automatically guides you at every step, meaning that you no longer have to leave WOW running as you search for your quests and more et

This is great. I love the comment htread on this one. Are they just palin nuts or just stupid? "12TB on paper I worked out to be about 5 billion pages. Now I don't know how long that will take to print, but if they wanted to print it all in, say, a month, they would need to print nearly 125,000 pages a minute, constantly until then. Personally, I vote that it is spread over loads of floppy disks, all labelled and then mixed into a large pile... 'Please insert disk #2363234' " HeHee!

"It's not yours, it's God's, and you're not going to get it," Copeland says of his financial records. He has launched a website to publicize his crusade and has received support from several leading conservatives, including Paul Weyrich and Kenneth Blackwell. Incredible! And tax free!

Capitalism: Govt. Regulation Is Stifling Energy Innovation
rustajb
by rustajb  6-26-2008
You can't maximize profits when you pay too much for R&D and the energy industry is run by interests who would rather make as much money as possible than provide forward thinking innovation. This is the continuing curse of capitalism. Capitalism encourages closed research. It's time we started thinking about shifting necessary industry away from this model and more towards open source. Everyone benefits when we share knowledge. Only the elite win when knowledge is corralled and controlled.

Hippocratic Oath for Scientists?
iskandar
by iskandar  6-25-2008    1
"Scientific misconduct is very expensive, leading to years of wasted research dollars and effort in pursuit of a scientific mirage, and it damages the public's perception of the value of science to society. Not only that, but the personal and professional costs to those closest to it are tremendous; whistle-blowers often lose everything and, if their scientific career somehow survives, it will always bear the scars, as revealed by Allegra Goodman in her excellent book, Intuition. In response to what appears to be a growing problem, a group of people at the Institute of Medical Science at University of Toronto in Canada wrote a scientist's version of the Hippocratic oath. This oath (above) was recited by all graduate students in the biological sciences at the beginning of the 2007-2008 academic year."

Another peak?
rlmrdl
by rlmrdl  6-25-2008
As the cost of food skyrockets for many reasons, including shortages, the cost of inputs to industrial food production are coming under stress. A 30% rise in a year is serious, 100% in a week is a mania, or major panic. We have been waiting for the other shoe to drop in so many areas, when they all do, we could be killed by a shoe shower.

John Bolton on Iran
willhelm
by willhelm  5-28-2008    2
Bolten is echoing my sentiments. I agree that an attack on Iran is insane. I have found it very disheartening that the Bush administration has blown a prime opportunity to force Iran's hand. Three years ago Iran was primed for economic collapse and the Iranian people were on our side. It seems to me an opportunity has been wasted.

Food Security Requires New Approach to Water
papananook
by papananook  5-25-2008
According to Berntell, every calorie of food you take in translates into one litre of water. He pointed out that red meat from cattle is more water-intensive because it takes up to 15 cubic metres of water to produce one kilogramme of beef — if the cattle are grain-fed. “This is a huge difference from a vegetarian diet where as low as 2.0 cubic metres of water per kilogramme are needed to produce certain vegetables,” Berntell noted. David Molden of IWMI, and one of the co-authors of the study, said if there was no change in current practices in food production and consumption, it is likely that twice as much water as that used today would be required by 2015 to produce the world’s required food. “Thus, the challenge was to reduce the amount of water use,” he told reporters last week. The study says the sheer magnitude of losses, wastage and over-consumption means that the international community has the ability and option to reduce gross food demand and agricultural water s
