The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  6-5-2009

Indeed, certain of the most authentic historians of those parts, who have been careful in collecting and collating the floating facts concerning this spectre, allege that the body of the trooper having been buried in the churchyard, the ghost rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head, and that the rushing speed with which he sometimes passes along the Hollow, like a midnight blast, is owing to his being belated, and in a hurry to get back to the churchyard before daybreak. debbyski
by debbyski  2-17-2009    4
"A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us when adversity takes the place of prosperity when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts." --Washington Irving

Twain was once voted the Quintessential American Author. Others who have been listed at his level during our 19th century were: Nathaniel Hawthorne Edgar Allan Poe Stephen Crane Bret Harte Washington Irving and a young man who was inspired totally by him: Jack London.
