POPSScott Ritter Rips Obama and McCain on War Policy Powerful refutation of McCain and Obama's assessment of Iran and the "war on terrorism" in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the way it is being portrayed to the public. Democrats in particular should see that Obama and McCain's policies (now) are very close, and not based upon credible threats, much like Iraq. (Ritter is a republican and former Marine and the former UN weapons inspector in Iraq.) If you listen on REAL video or audio his interview begins at the 42:10 mark. This same podcast also includes excerpts from Ron Paul's counter-convention.

POPSSarah Palin's Punch lines full of hot air and lies Quote: "That qualifies her to have her hand on the tiller of American foreign policy in the event that, God forbid, something happens to John McCain? To suggest that is frightening. Really – what if something happens to John McCain. What relevant experience does Sarah Palin have, to be able to sit across the conference table, with negotiators, with the prime ministers and presidents of this world?" the congresswoman said. "As the McCain campaign constantly reminds us, this is a dangerous world."

POPSWrong Woman; Wrong Message Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton's candidacy stood for -- and that Barack Obama's still does. I get no pleasure from imagining her in the spotlight on national and foreign policy issues about which she has zero background, with one month to learn to compete with Sen. Joe Biden's 37 years' experience. When asked last month about the vice presidency, she said, "I still can't answer that question until someone answers for me: What is it exactly that the VP does every day?" When asked about Iraq, she said, "I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."

POPSPalin Pledges Allegiance to AIPAC--Stamped "Approved"
From "Alaska First", and by-passing "America First", Palin goes straight to "Israel First". By consequence and definition then she can no longer be considered a "reformer". Like McCain, Obama, Pelosi, Hillary, and every other former 2008 candidate, the ultimate test of worthiness is not the American people but to the overbearing Lobby of a foreign government that sets the course of foreign policy in alliance with the neoconservatives--ensuring a continuance of the phony "war on terrorism"--to "make the world safe for Democracy" through wars for "regime change". How quickly Washington transforms everyone, even from the remotest states, by coercing conformity to global democratic agenda and blind allegiance to Israel through the muscle of The Lobby. This trumps all other considerations, is the hallmark of foreign policy (and why wars never cease), which also in turn has consequences on the economy (high gas prices, national debt, value of money) and domestic policy as well.

POPSBush Seeks New Congressional War on Terror Declaration Another attempt by the Bushistas to keep us on a permanent war footing and economy. The War Profiteers no doubt will love this and may have even written it. (I expect Congress to kiss the Preznut's ass again on this) Corporate war crimes are the norm.

POPSUN: Georgians Effectively Blocked from Homes On Saturday, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., a member of the chamber's foreign relations committee, visited Gori to observe the distribution of U.S. food aid. Asked whether the United States was considering new military aid, Corker said "these subjects are part of a longer and mid-term discussion" when Congress reconvenes in September. Russia supplies the EU with about a third of its oil and about two-fifths of its natural gas. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said European nations should adopt a united energy policy to avoid becoming too dependent on Russia. He said the EU nations should "use our collective bargaining power." "Without urgent action we risk sleepwalking into an energy dependance on less stable or reliable partners," Brown wrote in The Observer newspaper. Brown said he spoke with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev by telephone Saturday, and told the Russian leader "to expect a determined European response" to the crisis.

POPSBush seeks to make "war powers" permanent "Tucked deep into a recent proposal from the Bush administration is a provision that has received almost no public attention, yet in many ways captures one of President Bush’s defining legacies: an affirmation that the United States is still at war with Al Qaeda. POPSPutin: Bush Tricked Me Into Invading Georgia To Help McCain Beat Obama Does the US have close ties to Georgia? Yes. Has the US been instrumental in modernizing and backing Georgia’s military? Yes. But did the United States instruct Georgia to use such blunt force against separatists in the areas Russia now wants to be independent? Absolutely not. That was Georgia’s call as a sovereign nation, and Putin’s attempt to lay the blame with President Bush is simply a feint to cover his own country’s aggression in this matter. A feint that smells suspiciously Soviet. Remember when the Soviets would back rebels and invade countries all over the world and then claim they were just opposing American imperialism? Well we’re back to that again.

POPSBarack Obama: Leap of Faith
but because they're confused about the roots of his politics. Sen. Obama accumulated his victorious lead early with a liberal coalition willing to vote for him mainly for reasons of faith – upper-middle-class whites, black voters and young idealists -- all attempting to complete the civil-rights promise, answer the post-partisan appeal, or vote against the war and George Bush. His coalition's limitations hit the wall in Ohio. Here Sen. Clinton discovered her Rosie-the-Riveter persona, and it worked. I watched her sell bread-and-butter policy before blue-collar crowds in Youngstown, Akron and Cleveland. She was tremendously good at it. He just wasn't. The Sunday before the Ohio vote, Sen. Obama abandoned Ohio. The way Hillary won in these crucial November swing states may have fatally damaged his candidacy. His problem is that there is nothing in it (biography) to suggest he has spent any significant time thinking about these people other than as a political abstraction.

POPSCongressNow: Sestak Seeks Bipartisan Approach to Ending War He was an early and ardent backer of the presidential campaign of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and served on former President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council in the mid-1990s. Sestak has since backed Obama’s campaign, although he admits he’s not among Obama’s core group of national security advisers. Still, several Democratic lawmakers have suggested Sestak’s views carry weight among House Democrats. “When he speaks, he has the ear of everyone on the committee,” said Rep. Ellen Tauscher (Calif.), a senior Democrat on the Armed Services Committee. Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.), also a member of the committee, said Sestak has already emerged as as leader on military strategy. “He’s got the expertise. Democrats should welcome his experience.” Sestak said, “My belief is that those that have more recent experience and time in the military can help explain why certain polices” are needed, he said.

POPSPoor, Poor Buttsore Billary This is an especially sore point for Bill Clinton, people close to him say, because among many grievances he has about the campaign Obama waged against his wife is a belief that the candidate poor-mouthed the political and policy successes of his two terms. One senior Obama supporter said the Clinton associates negotiating on her behalf act like “Japanese soldiers in the South Pacific still fighting after the war is over.” A prominent Obama backer said some of Clinton’s lieutentants negotiating with the Obama team are “bitter enders” who presume that, rather than the Clintons reconciling themselves to Obama’s victory, it is up to Obama to accommodate them.

POPSBiden vocal, consistent Gitmo opponent " has destroyed faith in America's judgment. And it has devalued America's moral leadership in the world. Instead, this administration has focused to the point of obsession on the so-called "war on terrorism" and produced a one-size-fits-all doctrine of military preemption and regime change ill suited to the challenges we face. It has made fear the main driver of our foreign policy. It has turned a deadly serious but manageable threat -- a small number of radical groups that hate America -- into a ten-foot tall existential monster that dictates nearly every move we make. Even if you look at the world through this administration's distorted lens, you see a failed policy."

POPSIt's Biden You heard it here last folks. The text was sent pretty late, so I was long gone into dreamland. I woke up, turned on CNN, and caught the news. It wasn't much of a shock. Good choice, bad choice? Dunno. He could've done much worse and I don't think anyone in the running would be any better. There really wasn't a hit it out of the park choice available. Radical Clintonistas won't be happy, but at this point there are about 10 of them. Biden's Wikipedia bio is here . Obama got a lot of coverage out of his text message VP story -- which, let's face it, was a gimmick. But it was a very successful gimmick that sucked up all the oxygen in the newsroom for the past few days. Score one for Obama in the media war. The good news for me is that this frees up one of my dream cabinet members -- Bill Richardson for Secretary of State. Now, if we can just get people to start talking about Attorney General Russ Feingold, I'll be happy as a god

POPSWarning to Obama on the New Cold War by Tom Hayden
• McCain has traveled to Georgia, nominated his close friend Saakashlivi for a Nobel Prize in 2005, and was the first American leader to blast Russia last April, when Vladimir Putin issued a sharp warning against NATO membership for Georgia and the Ukraine, supported by the United States. • The Bush Administration was divided along familiar lines, with the foreign policy "realists" around Condoleezza Rice opposite the pro-Georgia hawks centered in Dick Cheney's office and allied with McCain--enthusiasts for spreading "democracy" from Iraq to the Russian border. • Randy Scheunemann, McCain's foreign policy adviser, was a registered foreign agent for Saakashlivi's government from at least 2004, when Saakashvili came to power, until May 15, 2008, when he technically severed his ties to Orion Strategies, his lobbying firm. At that point, Orion had earned at least $800,000 in lobbying fees from Georgia. • Saakashvili, with Scheuneman advising him, campaigned on a platform of taking
