Skype to sell unlimited international calls for $9.95/month
jasonbondshow
by jasonbondshow  4-21-2008
Skype is generally used as a software application running on a computer equipped with a microphone and speakers or a headset. But subscribers will also have the option to call a local number from their phones and be connected to international numbers that fall under their plan, paying only local access charges or using their cell-phone airtime. Unlimited international calling plans have been popping up in recent years from hardware-based phone services like Vonage International Holdings Corp. and cable companies, but the prices are generally higher, and the plans are add-ons to basic calling plans that cost even more. Skype said its subscribers called phones for 1.7 billion minutes in the first three months of the year, compared with 14.2 billion minutes used in computer-to-computer sessions, which are free.

Vonages - Easy, Affordable, Worthless
storvinoinc
by storvinoinc  2-9-2008    1
Please refer back to Ticket #'s 17299452 and 17647112, they may even be more. Whether or not there is, something has to be down about this called ID issue. Its bad enough when it only works part of the time, but now it has stopped completely. I want this issue resolved, I don't intend to keep summiting tickets every few weeks for a support technician to send me back an email covering standard trouble shooting procedures, I expect my problem to be handled a little more professional than that. I know hot to trouble shoot, I have followed your instructions over and over again trying to fix it, I used to provide technical support for Holiday Inn World Wide, Omni Hotels, Princess Cruise Lines etc. I am not illiterate when it comes to diagnostic and trouble shooting techniques, however the technical support staff at Vonage must very well be because no one has bothered to fix this problem, no one has bothered to follow up on this problem, I even got a survey at the end of my last support tick

FCC Questions Comcast About Interference With File-Sharing Traffic
merrie
by merrie  1-14-2008
And Vuze Inc., a company that distributes video using BitTorrent file-sharing technology, later filed a separate complaint, asking the FCC to clarify how much power Internet service providers have in controlling traffic on their lines. In an investigation last year, The Associated Press found that Comcast in some cases hindered file sharing by subscribers who used BitTorrent. The findings, first reported Oct. 19, confirmed claims by users who also noticed interference with other file-sharing applications. Do you block access to peer-to-peer applications like BitTorrent? No. We do not block access to any Web site or applications, including BitTorrent. Our customers use the Internet for downloading and uploading files, watching movies and videos, streaming music, sharing digital photos, accessing numerous peer-to-peer sites, VOIP applications like Vonage, and thousands of other applications online. Comcast service maintenance scheduled for Jan 15 and 16 12am to 7am ET

We need open standards in the VOIP world!
edsim
by edsim  10-13-2007
I couldn't agree more and that is why I invested in Michael Robertson's Sipphone over 18 months ago. You can see my blog post here about it: http://www.beyondvc.com/2006/02/why_we_invested.html. Anyway, it reminds me of the days when AOL could only email AOL users and Compuserve only other Compuserve users. I am already seeing a move towards open standards as companies like Nokia are integrating a SIP stack in their dual mode wifi phones and Cisco and Microsoft and Avaya are using this as the basis for their VOIP platforms

How VoIP Works
merrie
by merrie  10-12-2007
VoIP is a revolutionary technology that has the potential to completely rework the world's phone systems. VoIP providers like Vonage have already been around for a little while and are growing steadily. Major carriers like AT&T are already setting up VoIP calling plans in several markets around the United States, and the FCC is looking seriously at the potential ramifications of VoIP service.

SunRocket Burns Out
Forbes Technology
by Forbes Technology  7-17-2007
Looks like running an internet phone business isn't as easy as it once seemed. Vonage is flailing too, and the once immensely promising VoIP market is on the ropes, crippled by the high costs of attracting customers --and by not owning the lines they sell their service over. Time will tell if stand-alone VoIP providers can survive at all... -David M. Ewalt

Jajah: Save BIG $ On Long Distance, International TOO!
BartendingBear
by BartendingBear  4-19-2007    1
I use JaJah for ALL my long distance, even the intra-lata calls I make. Excellent service and ultra-low prices. Works with land-lines, cell-phones, PSP, and who knows what else, with many great features. I don't even have a long-distance carrier. Can't recommend it enough. I just wish eBay hadn't shut them out of PayPal, but they are competition for Skype, which, along with PayPal, eBay also owns. TAKE THAT, AT&T! ;-)

Some VoIP services surpass traditional phones
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  9-25-2006
Basically, cable voip (in most cases) is better than traditional lndline. Now if only Eastlink (my local cable/internet/phone provider offered VOIP as a service...) Ofcourse anyone who has used googletalk as a voice client knows in many cases it is far superior than phone/voip/etc.. too bad i can't use my phone with google-talk.. mabe my g/f could figure it out then :| (GTalk is also free to use.. provide dyou have an internet connection).

Vonage meets Record Sage
RecordSage
by RecordSage  8-26-2006    1
Got Vonage installed today... so far so good. Customer service seems to lack tremendously in the brains department, but otherwise definite upgrade from the old Verizon line. One of the cool features they have is ability to run a piece of software on a PC that allows to call any number from the PC. They claim to have integration with Outlook, but I use Thunderbird, so the only option they described was manual entry. Why would someone enter numbers to dial into a computer instead of the phone itself every time is beyond me. So, I thought that if they had a way to run the little program via the shell interface and allow to pass a parameter (phone) - maybe I could automate it somehow with... Record Sage. That's where the customer service was totally inept in answering a simple question. After reading some online forums it turns out that one can use this program by simply highlighting a number on the screen and pressing their hotkey to call it.

Is Vonage In A Death Spiral?
hherbzilla
by hherbzilla  8-22-2006    1
Death spiral? I hope so! :-) I had all sorts of problems with Vonage. When I finally decided to disconnect, they then highlighted the disconnect charges for each of my two phone lines! I didn't have these "hidden" charges with BellSouth or Time Warner. Actually, I've been generally disappointed with digital phone service. I'm planning to go back to a land line.
