POPSPandemics - What We Can Learn from WoW "Dr. Fefferman’s 2007 study, published in the prestigious The Lancet Infectious Diseases medical journal, reports that while these healers prolonged the life of their virtual patients, the longer life of the patients kept them infectious for a longer time, thereby passing on the disease to more players. The study also reported that the healers themselves became infected, and they, too, passed on the disease to more players. I asked Dr. Fefferman if her study can shed any light on our current swine flu scare. She told me, “One of the most significant findings we saw in the WoW study is that people panic before information is known. This isn’t surprising in a general context, but in the context of an epidemic, the extent of panic can shape the severity of the outbreak…"

POPSAvatars and Second Life adultery: ~ ~ ~ ~ A tale of online cheating and real-world heartbreak~ ~ ~ ~ Kira and Rik, you see, don’t exist. They are avatars, online characters who were created by Kristen and Steve in Second Life, an internet fantasy world, where you can reinvent yourself and embark on the kind of adventures you’ve always dreamed of – including a WAG-style white wedding with 20ft train, and even, as we have seen today, the phenomenon of cyber-adultery. “Kira was everything I should have been,” says Kristen, who has a 12-year-old son. “Beautiful, blonde and slim. My real life was diabolical and I wanted an escape. In Second Life I could be who I wanted to be, and when I met Nik I was in control for the first time in years. I got my life back.” It gets even weirder once you realise that Kristen’s mother logged on to Second Life to see her “daughter” Kira wed Nik and that Steve’s mate was his best man, watching, all choked up, on the sidelines.

POPSLifelike Animation Breakthrough AMD last week released a new chip with a billion transistors that will be able to show off creations such as Emily by allowing a much greater number of computations per second. "If you're trying to process the graphics in a photo-realistic animation, in real-time, there's a lot of computation involved," said Mr Koduri. He said that AMD's new chip - the Radeon HD 4870 X2 - was able to process 2.4 teraflops of information per second, meaning it had a capability similar to a computer that - only 12 years ago - would have filled a room. AMD's chip fits inside a standard PC. But he said that the line between what was real and what was rendered would not be blurred completely until 2020.

POPS‘Shank’ website is aimed at the kids who carry knives Online article from the Sun about the application "superpoke" including "shank" in its list of actions. What a load of rubbish. There's not this sort of outcry about the fact players can go online in NUMEROUS games, create characters that represent themselves and then proceed to stab eachother, as well as a whole host of other actions. The fact that a tiny, crudely drawn picture of a knife has recieved this sort of response is ridiculous. Saying that the site promotes gang violence etc. is competely outrageous. Especially since there are discalimers on facebook when adding the application saying it was not produced by the makers of Facebook. What an over the top, ridiculous article. Also, you'l notice how its an 'exclusive'.. I wonder why... POPSIf you can't play- outsource it. In fact, the trading of virtual property is so lucrative that some big online gaming companies have jumped into the business, creating their own online marketplaces. Other start-up companies are also rushing in, acting as international brokers to match buyers and sellers in different countries, and contracting out business to Chinese gold-farming factories. "We're like a stock exchange. You can buy and sell with us," says Alan Qiu, a founder of the Shanghai-based Ucdao.com. "We farm out the different jobs. Some people say, 'I want to get from Level 1 to 60,' so we find someone to do that."

POPSVirtual World Therapeautic For Addicts "His VR environments, developed with a company called Virtually Better, feature different scenarios that an addict may find challenging: a bar with imbibing patrons, a house party with guests drinking and smoking, a convenient store with cigarettes and alcoholic beverages within reach, a designated smoking section outside of a building or a room with an arguing couple. The environments use actors in each scene as opposed to computer-generated characters. In addition, the study added another layer of realism. A device sprayed the air with scents the participant may encounter in the various scenarios--cigarette smoke, alcoholic beverages, pizza or aromas associated with the outdoors." "This study shows us the value of using virtual reality as a tool for assessing and treating addictions. Future studies should explore the importance of environmental settings and other cues on cravings and relapse," Bordnick said.
