POPSIn Orissa Christians treated worse than animals, says Father Bernard Fr Bernard Digal is the treasurer of the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar. He spoke to AsiaNews about his pain over what is happening in Orissa. He, too, was wounded, beaten for hours by radical Hindus, left for a whole night unconscious, half naked, in the forest, until he was found by his driver. Now he is in the intensive care unit in Mumbai’s Holy Spirit Hospital. During his talk with AsiaNews he was given another unit of blood. But his thoughts were with his people and family, all forced to flee to save their lives, now stranded in a refugee camp near Bhubaneshwar. “My heart is filled with gratitude because God saved my life. But whilst I am being treated here my people are hiding in the forest and even there, there is no security,” he said. “There are mothers breast-feeding their infants, children, young and old people, all hanging on a precarious thread, in terror. Even refugee camps are not free of dangers.”

POPSMASSIVE Explosion at Connecticut Power Plant Shakes Houses Violently; some dead; many injured
Occurred at 11:00 am local time today. Neighbors of the plant said as many as 100 employees may have been working there when the explosion took place. Confirmed information about damage and injuries from authorities was difficult to obtain. A resident of East Hampton almost directly across the river from the plant said he heard a load booming explosion at about 11 a.m. Immediately afterward his house was hit with a concussion that caused him to believe someone had driven an automobile into his home. The concussion interrupted services at a nearby East Hampton church, causing parishioners to speculate that the area had just experienced an earthquake. Other witnesses said they felt the concussion as far away as North Branford and Durham. A neighbor of the plant said there were quantities of natural gas on the site. A witness looking at the destruction from across the river in Portland said the main plant building seemed to have been substantially leveled.

POPSGirl Buried Alive In Grisly Honour Killing The father is reported to have said in his testimony that the family was unhappy she had male friends. In honour killings, most prevalent in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast, a so-called family council names a member to murder a female relative. A victim is targeted if she is considered to have sullied the family honour, usually by engaging in an extra-marital affair. But the practice has gone so far as to kill rape victims or women who simply talked to strange men.

POPSUSA History in Haiti People were moaning this week: "How could Haiti arrest our wonderful USA missionaries." But calling themselves 'missionaries,' is like a mask. The facts are criminal acts. Thinking we're the 'saviors,' of Haiti also a Mask. This article, printed yesterday, is a good summary of USA involvement in Haiti. It's great that Anyone does Anything to help Haiti out but thinking the USA is their 'friendly big brother,' or something is way off the mark. A summary from the Aristide days sums it up: QUOTE: "Since the election of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2000, the United States has moved to sabotage Haiti's fledgling democracy through an economic aid embargo, massive funding of elite opposition groups, support for paramilitary coup attempts, and a propaganda offensive against the Aristide government. Hidden from the headlines for years, this campaign has now become an open effort to destroy a popularly elected, progressive government." http://www.haitiaction.net/HFTH/

POPS"In the Clutches of the American Monster."
A QUOTE: "From here we start our struggle to get our sister released from the clutches of the American monster." is how this article ends, referring to the guilty verdict for a Pakistan scientist, mother of three. As we now know (right?) people are held in U.S. secret prisons for years and years, without trials, tortured, and murdered (one murder conviction thus far, for beating a general to death). Aafia Siddiqui, according to many reports, was one of those victims, held for years in jail, a secret prison, tortured and raped. After escape she was hunted down, arrested by Afghan authorities, and when U.S. troops showed up to take her away she grabbed a gun from one of the guards and shot them down. TYPICALLY, we haven't heard much about this trial: evidence, Q&A, what she said when she was on the witness stand --- but we get a lot of commentary about it. Humm...We're suppose to believe she was also plotting to blow up the Statue of Liberty. But we've managed to do th

POPSPatients in 'vegetative' state can think and communicate It will raise questions about when doctors should switch off life support machines. It is likely to add to the debate on assisted suicide as the patient could potentially decide and communicate if they wish to carry on living. It comes just weeks after Kay Gilderdale was acquitted of assisting the suicide of her daughter Lynn who the jury accepted had lived a “twilight life” for more than 17 years.

POPSHomeowners Walk Away Well! why not? We have the example of business and Wall Street as the example. It's not personal, just good business. Isn't that the excuse business always uses? I tire of people whining over finance. Being stupid is the problem of gamblers hoping for a free ride. Both sides were stupid and greedy and I think the cows just came home.

POPSNo Chance of Parole for Victims! Murder victims will never have the opportunity to grow old and gray. Why should we even consider that their killers should go free? Parole boards re-victimize the victims time and time again.
