POPSZenyatta Simply Perfect in Classic and she did so in front of a raucous crowd of 58,825 on Saturday at Santa Anita Park. And she did it in spectacular fashion in her first career start against males, taking her typical position at the back of the field under Racing Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith and charging down the stretch with authority"her stride lengthening and becoming more powerful with every kick"to inhale the leaders and hit the finish line first, just as she did in each one of the previous 13 starts of her brilliant career. “There are tears coming to my eyes,” said trainer John Shirreffs, who won the Breeders’ Cup Ladies' Classic (G1) last year with Zenyatta and this year’s Ladies' Classic on Friday with Life Is Sweet, becoming the first trainer to achieve the rare double in the same season. “I can’t believe it. “She is a great, great filly. She is all heart. The way the crowd took to her was just amazing. They cheered for her; they clapped for her; they love her.

POPSThe Mule I liked this essay. At the same time, I am struck by how hard we humans work to try to ignore or deny that death is a part of life.

POPSVaccines And this is why Jamie probably won't be getting any more vaccines. The only reason he got the first set (which I delayed until 4 months) is because I thought he might have to be in day care. That is no longer the case, so unless we're going to leave the country I think he's done.

POPSTiger Mom Looses Cubs: Adopts Orphaned Piglets In a zoo in California, a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth. The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

POPSNicaragua's Vampire Problem Blood feeders, on the other hand, are extremely rare — only three out of 1,100 species of bat are vampires, and all are found in Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America. Bill Schutt, a zoologist and author of the book Dark Banquet, about 10 species of bats were erroneously named "vampires," while the true blood-feeders were given more innocuous-sounding Latin names. "Bats Vampyrum, Vampyrops, Vampyrina, Vampyressa, Vampyriscus, and Vampyrodes aren't sanguivores , while Desmodus, Diaemus, and Diphylla are true vampires," when people act on their ignorance and kill beneficial bats, they are really putting themselves at even greater risk from the real blood-feeding terrors of the night: mosquitoes. Many more people die each year from mosquito-born diseases than from bat-transmitted rabies.

POPSDr. Michael W. Fox, holistic, self-described "feral" veterinarian More: In modern parlance, we say what's good for the Earth is good for us because when we harm the Earth we ultimately harm ourselves, as we also do when we violate the Golden Rule by not treating other living beings as we would have them treat us…Earthcare is therefore one of the beatitudes of a humane, caring and loving community. It is also integral to achieving holistic health care: Healthcare = Peoplecare and Animalcare and Earthcare. The health and wealth of the people (Peoplecare) is dependent upon a healthy environment (Earthcare) and upon the healthy wild and domestic animal population (Animalcare). The essence of holistic health care, therefore, is to give equal and just consideration to human interests, animal rights, environmental ethics and the greater good.
