Great Lakes Basin Compact: Protect a Natural & National Treasure
urbanlife
by urbanlife  Yesterday 1:50 PM
The Great Lakes are a finite, non-renewable natural treasure - containing a combined total of 6 quadrillion gallons of water — one-fifth of the world's fresh surface water. The lakes span 10,900 miles of coastline along the United States and Canada. The surface area of the lakes is larger than the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire combined. In 1998, there was a Lake Superior-based company in Ontario that proposed to take water by tanker out of Lake Superior to Asia. This proposal failed and spurred the Great Lakes governors to take action. In 2001, they agreed to a framework to begin negotiating the compact. By 2005, they had a deal to take to their state legislatures...the base for the Great Lakes Basin Compact. It says clearly that the Great Lakes should not be the long-term water supply answer for any other part of the world or any other part of the country.

South Korean and American officials welcomed the early demolition of the cooling tower as an encouraging sign of North Korea’s commitment to a broader deal under which Washington hopes to eradicate all the North’s nuclear assets. “By demolishing the tower, North Korea appears to demonstrate that it would not produce any more plutonium,” said Kim Yeon-chul, a North Korea expert at the Asiatic Research Center at Korea University in Seoul.

Senators Challenge Illegal Border Searches of US Citizens
blueridge
by blueridge  6-25-2008
unconstitutional, arbitrary search and seizure at borders widespread. Homeland Security gets challenged again by the 4th amendment, and it does not take a lawyer to prove they are illegally searching (like they do in airports too, without challenge). Where are the republicans...are they against freedom? Is this America or the Soviet Union? This is proof that customs is indoctrinated into paranoia and therefore over-aggressive action. If you go to Canada they pull all your personal info up on a screen...the Canadian customs apparently link to IRS files and your drivers license info here in the States!

McCain is lying already...
papananook
by papananook  6-9-2008    2
John McCain claims "I've supported every investigation and ways of finding out what caused the tragedy." This is a lie. As we reported on 14 September 2005 in this thread above. Got that? In a straight party-line vote, John "Straightalk" McCain backed up his buddy George W. Bush in an attempt to avoid investigating the mess. Today, with New Orleans still a mess, Ol' Straightalk lies about it. Oh, yeah, to prove it wasn't a fluke the first time he also voted against an independent investigation in February, 2006.

Spinning New Tales To The Rapt Media Clowns

thereby setting the stage for the eventual rise of new Marxist third party. Most New Party members hailed from the Democratic Socialists of America and the militant organization ACORN. The party's Chicago chapter also included a large contingent from the Committees of Correspondence, a Marxist coalition of former Maoists, Trotskyists, and Communist Party USA members. The New Party's modus operandi included the political strategy of "electoral fusion," where it would nominate, for various political offices, candidates from other parties (usually Democrats), thereby enabling each of those candidates to occupy more than one ballot line in the voting booth. By so doing, the New Party often was able to influence candidates' platforms. (Fusion of this type is permitted in seven states -- Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Mississippi, New York, South Carolina, and Vermont -- but is common only in New York.) http://yidwithlid.blogspot.com/2008/05/barack-obama-ran-on-marxist-party-line.

(continued) in some states, these were not recorded (or whether to count Florida and Michigan:) http://www.redstate.com/stories/elections/2008/obamomentum_revisited Here's the remaining schedule, with a chart showing the most recent poll I could find - I used Rasmussen for West Virginia, Kentucky and Oregon, a mid-April Dakota Wesleyan poll for South Dakota, a mid-April Puerto Rico poll, and, lacking a head-to-head poll, I used Rasmussen's general election numbers for Montana, which show Obama polling much better, but with basically similar numbers to the South Dakota poll (but note that unlike earlier Obama mountain-state victories these are primaries, not caucuses).

I'm not sure I completely buy into packaging made from corn. I wonder if the large energy footprint of corn is factored into the "greenness" of this packaging. And I'd like to see corn NOT be the crop of choice for alternative fuels, etc. But, at least roasters are thinking in the right direction.

For now, scientists are continuing to monitor sick bats. But as every week brings a fresh discovery of White Nose Syndrome in yet another cave, and mortality rates continue to climb, their fear for all the bats in the Northeastern US is rising. Their hope is that before next winter, when the bats return to caves and mines to hibernate, more will be known and the decline in bat numbers can be prevented.

Round Cars

The VW ball is in a private collection. Mr. Fisk, who was born in Vermont in 1970, has made other balls with auto themes: a school bus, a green John Deere tractor, a drab brown U.P.S. truck and a white Mister Softee ice cream truck, complete with lights. “A U.P.S. guy saw the U.P.S. ball and stopped by the house of the owner,” Mr. Fisk said. “He thought it was a package ready for shipping.” His spheres come with windows and steering wheels. He does all the work using metal and glass fabrication skills he taught himself. He has also sculptured a street ball, a sphere of asphalt marked with painted dotted lines. Mr. Fisk’s barn ball, with wood painted red and a window, was used for the cover of the Phish album “Round Room.” He has moved beyond the balls into new modes of sculpture. “The new theme for some reason seems to be garbage,” he said. Among his latest pieces, shown at the Taxter & Spengemann Gallery in Manhattan, is a sculpture of a garbage can and another of a garbage b

The Reason Democrats are Idiots!

After the Bush presidency, the oval office is just about being handed to the Democratic Party; but No! They are not going to rally the party like this. What these morons are going to do is give the final election to McCain who is just another Bush. I'm independent, but I don't want McCain in office. I'd vote for Obama, but I'll never vote for the Hillary 'the liar' Clinton!

Appalachian Trail: Maine to Georgia...Could It Be Extended?
urbanlife
by urbanlife  3-25-2008
Benton MacKaye was convinced that the pace of urban and industrial life along the East Coast was harmful to people. He convened the first Appalachian Trail "conference" in Washington, D.C., in 1925. That gathering of hikers, foresters, and public officials embraced the goal of building the A.T. Currently, the A.T. goes from Maine to Georgia, but there is a movement to extend the A.T. to attach to the existing Alabama Pinhoti trail. Such a move would require an act of Congress: to change the wording of the National Trails System Act of 1968 to include Alabama. But --- it is not that easy when you take into consideration Georgia. An extension could siphon hikers and their tourist dollars away. I think that an extension would carry on Mackaye's original vision: He envisioned the A.T. as a path interspersed with planned wilderness communities where people could go to renew themselves. An extension into Alabama would only expand this wilderness escape and national treasure.

Bush's Child Prostitutes, 1.2M as young as 13

by righthand  3-18-2008    2
Bush's invasion of a country that posed no threat to the US was illegal under both US and international law, according to legal experts. Bush has been convicted of war crimes by citizen tribunals around the world, including New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Istanbul. Just las week, the towns of Brattleboro and Marlboro Vermont voted to indict and arrest Bush and Cheney. In 2002 and 2003, Bush led a propaganda campaign to defraud Congress, the American people, and key allies into believing Iraq was a threat. Bush claimed Iraq had stockpiles of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons to use against the US, and was sharing them with Al Qaeda. Speaking near Rochester NY, Bush later admitted, "See in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda." ...AlterNet
