'We Are Making Fools Of Ourselves In The Eyes Of The World'
merrie
by merrie  Today 9:51 PM    1
How much is her life worth, according to Minister Balin's budget? How does he calculate this? These are politically sensitive questions, questions that former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher never asked when it came to the life of Salman Rushdie, wherever he happened to be. Dutch society has no choice in this case. Canceling Ayaan's protection would be the equivalent of a death sentence. She can lead a relatively quiet life in the United States, but not in the Netherlands. And because she is so well known in the Netherlands and practically lives the life of a prisoner, not even able to go out on the street, the most humane solution is to continue to provide her with protection in America. Both Hirsi Ali and Hirsch Balin can only lose. The winners are the extremists who laugh about our inability to offer this courageous woman quiet and safety. You see, it's too expensive. In fact, though, it makes you want to weep.

Fidel Castro hints at Russian air base in Cuba
missjackson
by missjackson  Today 6:45 PM
Gen Schwartz’s comments appeared to have enraged Mr Castro, who accused the United States of imperial Machiavellianism and claimed that Washington was bent on Cuba’s destruction. So far, the reports of a Russian presence on Cuba remain speculative, with the Kremlin issuing a denial and the White House refusing to comment. Even so, the speculation is mounting since Izvestia, often used to float controversial Kremlin plans, quoted military sources as saying that the proposal was in retaliation for US plans to build a missile defence shield in central Europe, ostensibly against a nuclear strike by Iran.

This is my Kind of Guy--Inyerface, in the Army and Green
papananook

The banner remained hanging for seven hours, which speaks volumes about the sentiment among enlisted personal on the base. The fact this incident wasn’t reported also tells something about the attitude of the press. The accomplishment of which Bartelli feels most proud from his service was when he was assigned to design an infrastructure that would bring low cost power, solar and wind, to remote Afghan villages. “I spent a considerable amount of time writing and talking with vendors from Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, coming up with a plan that was affordable and as locally based as possible. By giving them solar and wind, fully sustainable, we could bring electricity to the villages.” While the chain of command eventually rejected it, there was little doubt Bartelli’s commanding officer chose him for this project because of his outspokenness on the environment.

Obama is wrong
n2sooners
by n2sooners  7-23-2008
While the United States has an interest in preventing the resurgence of the Afghan Taliban, the country's strategic importance pales beside that of Iraq, which lies at the geopolitical center of the Middle East and contains some of the world's largest oil reserves. If Mr. Obama's antiwar stance has blinded him to those realities, that could prove far more debilitating to him as president than any particular timetable.

Indian government wins confidence vote... The drama that had unfolded involving the monumental corruption and horse trading of the MPs all across the parties, that were highlighted by the national media before the no-confidence motion, is a monumental shame to the congress-led Govt... The poor common man looks on, feeling furious and frustrated and this is the so-called largest Democracy in the World, my dear Watson!

Russian Bombers Could Be Deployed To Cuba
merrie
by merrie  7-22-2008    2
It was unclear if the source was suggesting that Russia would reopen a base in Cuba or merely use an airfield there for stopovers by the bombers, Tu-160s and Tu-95s, which are already capable of reaching the United States from bases in Russia. Russian strategic bombers, long mothballed, resumed worldwide patrols last year under orders from then-President Vladimir Putin. The flights have continued under his successor, Dmitry Medvedev. Aircraft from the NATO alliance have repeatedly scrambled as the bombers approached but did not enter the airspace of alliance countries. The Russian bombers also buzzed low over the USS Nimitz, an American aircraft carrier, in the Pacific Ocean this year. The United States says it wants to deploy tracking radar in the Czech Republic and 10 missile interceptors in Poland as a defensive measure against missiles that might be fired from countries such as Iran.

This Day in History-July 21 'Infamous Monkey Trial'
righthand
by righthand  7-21-2008    3
"To show up fundamentalism,""to prevent bigots and ignoramuses from controlling the educational system of the United States." said Darrow. So what has changed after 80 years of intellectual backwardness?! Would this case be out of place in Bush's America - in the land of the 'free and home of the brave', mired in debt and death of its own making? Where now is the shinning beacon of liberty? What country has made 'democracy' a dirty word. What county elects an AWOL drunk as commander-in-chief, TWICE? Where is the KKK a white sheet away from power and the noose? What country is still loved even by it pseudo enemies?

U.S. Position Complicates Global Effort to Curb Illicit Arms
papananook
by papananook  7-21-2008
Ever see the Nicolas Cage flick ‘Lord of War’? At the very end, when his character has been caught after years of dealing weapons to anyone who could pay, he is given a ‘get out of jail’ card by a shadowy US military officer, and told he was ‘allowed’ to do what he did because it helped further US imperial aims. At the end, just before the credits was a list of who is selling what to whom. The US leads the world in the illicit arms trade. And the US will do nothing that will endanger the profits from these transactions. No matter who dies as a result.

Obama’s No-Brainer on Education
schreibe
by schreibe  7-20-2008
The stakes couldn't be higher. The United States now ranks 25th among 30 industrialized countries in math. "If I told you your basketball team finished in 25th place, you'd be outraged," says former West Virginia governor Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education. When the landmark "A Nation at Risk" report was issued 25 years ago, the education system was ailing, but the United States was still No. 1 in college-graduation rates. Now we are No. 21. "We simply have not progressed," says former Colorado governor Roy Romer, who heads a commission that recently updated the report. "The rest of the world has." For example, the average European nation has 13 more school days than we do.
