POPS'The slap heard around the web' Communications technologies are now delivering unprecedented volumes of information. This story clearly shows that this "information" can be used in powerful ways. Used properly, it may just be possible to improve societies by publicizing unacceptable behavior that was previously "secret". One obvious issue is "transparency" versus "privacy".

POPSGranada,Alhambra & Free Tapas Granada, in the east of Andalucía, is a city steeped in Moorish tradition. The Alhambra Palace which was recently short listed as a Seventh Wonder of the New World, is truly wondrous but there is so much more to see and do. You will be sure to find an eatery to your liking among the many atmospheric restaurants, cafes and bars. Happily, unlike much of modern Spain, Granada’s bars still offer generous free tapas.

POPSWhat happened to Babylon? and using fragile stone-paved pathways as tank streets. * The looting that began during America’s tenure continues today. Apparently, Unesco is now rushing to reverse their decision and offer Babylon some World Heritage protection. But the sad truth is, it might be too late.<< :-(

POPSThe planet's future: Climate change 'will cause civilisation to collapse' But the authors suggest the threats could also provide the potential for a positive future for all. "The good news is that the global financial crisis and climate change planning may be helping humanity to move from its often selfish, self-centred adolescence to a more globally responsible adulthood... Many perceive the current economic disaster as an opportunity to invest in the next generation of greener technologies, to rethink economic and development assumptions, and to put the world on course for a better future." POPSUNESCO: US Seriously Damaged Historic Babylon
Allen said the 2003 war bought the restoration project some time because it prevented premature, ill-supervised development of the site. But looters rampaged through Babylon after the U.S.-led invasion, and U.S. forces stuffed sandbags with dirt that contained ancient pottery and brick fragments, the UNESCO assessment said. It said U.S. forces and the contractors they employed, mainly KBR, then a Halliburton subsidiary, "caused major damage to the city by digging, cutting, scraping, and leveling." The U.S. military did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but in the past it has said looting would have been worse had its troops not been there. The report said steel stakes were driven into ancient walls, which included fragments with inscriptions from the time of King Nebuchadnezzar II, who ruled 2 1/2 millennia ago and is credited with building the Hanging Gardens of Babylon - one of the Seven Wonders of the World. POPSUNESCO: Invasion seriously harmed historic Babylon The report said steel stakes were driven into ancient walls, which included fragments with inscriptions from the time of King Nebuchadnezzar II, who ruled 2 1/2 millennia ago and is credited with building the Hanging Gardens of Babylon — one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A helicopter pad, roads and parking lots were built, and heavy vehicles devastated ancient brick roads, the report said. The symbolic dragon-snakes adorning many of the structures have been partly smashed. Today there's no trace of the legendary Hanging Gardens. But no large-scale exploration has been done at Babylon in nearly a century, and according to the UNESCO report, archaeologists believe "much remains buried beneath the earth and there is still a great deal to discover." The rest of the article squabbles about who is at fault. This sickens me. A wealth of history and knowledge destroyed. so sad

People tend to forget, when speaking of Andalucia and the Costa del Sol, that it is home to more than 70 different nationalities. The last barbecue we attended counted eight different nationalities - and we were only ten people....so you are bound to meet others than just Francis, Paco and Nieves....when you start to explore the area.

POPSHo Chi Minh City Tour
One of the region's top attractions is the Cat Tien National Park, a 70,000-hectare Unesco-rated biosphere boasting a startling variety of flora and fauna. Visitors can go bird-watching, take to hiking trails, overnight in a crocodile swamp and look for signs of Vietnam's rarest wildlife. The Con Dao Islands, a 40-minute flight from the city, offer an equally attractive getaway, albeit of a tropical island flavour. A former prison colony under the French and US regimes, Con Dao today boasts largely undiscovered beaches, empty coastal roads and a healthy ecosystem complete with coral reefs and colonies of green sea turtles - one of Vietnam's best places to see them in the wild. Other fine beaches stretch just east of the gruff oilman's town of Vung Tau. Although lacking the popularity of Mui Ne and Nha Trang further up the coast, there are some sparkling gems here - particularly Long Hai and Ho Tram - for those seeking a quiet beach holiday far from the madding crowd.
