POPS'Joystick' Warfare Brings Ethics Debate--UAVs and Other Robotic Weapons Robo-warfare is making it too easy to wage arbitrary war, and is by historical standards cowardly , usually entailing overkill to achieve a limited target (like swatting mosquitos with hand grenades. Can you say "collateral damage"?). To bring no risk to warfare is to undermine the principle of Just War, where people voluntarily enter into war upon principles of justice (self defense), and risk their own lives bravely and willingly. Sending robots risks nothing, and makes unjust war a no-risk situation, and therefore too easy to begin. Also there is the danger factor where human judgment may be lacking instead of a programmed response, without the ability to correct or withdraw destructive actions. Ask the civilians in Afghanistan or Pakistan what they think of drone (Predator) UAV bombing flights so far. More civilians have been killed than 'terrorists".

POPSHow robot drones revolutionized the face of warfare All great until some kid hacks in and links it to his/her Wii or PS3. While these are interesting tech times, you have to wonder just how far off of T2 we are really molding into and how just when Optimus prime might unfold out of some of these.

POPSNew al-Qaeda Book Reveals Weakened & Paranoid Group
“It would be no exaggeration to say that the first line in the raging Crusader campaign waged by America and its allies against the Muslims and their lands is the network of spies, of various and sundry sorts and kinds,” says the book, translated by the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute, or MEMRI “Their effects are seen: carnage, destruction, arrest, and pursuit, but they themselves remain unseen, just like Satan and his ilk who see us while remaining unseen.” Terror experts have called the book unique in its weak and worried tone. “I haven’t ever seen this kind of language from senior Al Qaeda commanders before,” said Daniel Lev, who works for MEMRI. “In general, Al Qaeda speaks in a very triumphant tone,”but in the new book Al-Libi speaks of the group’s dire straits and serious problems, Lev added. “Such an admission of distress on the part of a senior Al Qaeda commander makes this a very unique book in terms of the author.

POPSU.S. Jet Shoots Down Iranian Drone Over Iraq (Updated) At least one was shot down by Israeli fighter jets. In 2007, Iran said it built a drone with a range of 420 miles. In February, Iran's deputy defense minister claimed its latest UAV could now fly as far as 600 miles -- a huge improvement over crude drones like the Misrad, if true. Iran often exaggerates what its weapons can do. But, if this drone really can stay in the air for for that long, the Washington Times notes, "it could soar over every U.S. military installation, diplomatic mission or country of interest in the Middle East." Including those in Iraq. UPDATE: So I finally got a hold of a spokesman for Multi-National Corps - Iraq. His response: "I believe MNF-I is taking the lead on this incident." So then I reached out to MNF-I. A spokesman there wouldn't confirm the shoot-down. Nor would he deny it. "We've got nothing for you, Noah," the spokesman said.

POPSMoyer's Journal: Is Afghanistan Obama's "Iraq" or "Vietnam"?
His guest Pierre Sprey, a former Pentagon official under McNamera, and developer of military planes like the Warthog, destroys the arguments for war in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and particularly of drone strikes in Pakistan, which kill more civilians that alleged, unproven "combatants". (The woman's comments are worthless). Must hear podcast. The "war on terror" based upon 9/11 is also challenged effectively as the entire erroneous premise, which Obama continues just like Bush, for a multitude of errors and war crimes. Sprey on bombing targets with UAV drones: You can't tell with a camera or an infrared sensor or something whether somebody's a Taliban. In the end, you're relying on either, you know, some form of intercepted communications, which doesn't point at a person. It just, you know, points at a radio or a cell phone or something like that. Or, most likely, you're relying on some Afghani of unknown veracity and unknown motivation

POPSObama's Foreign Policy Goes Neocon--Unjust Wars Will Continue
The real Obama policy. Must see video interview (at link) where Obama 1) legitimizes the "war on terrorism" (as necessary and true war); 2) escalate war in Afghanistan (regime change, like Iraq continues); 3) willing to attack targets inside Pakistan--i.e. invade any sovereign country to kill and destroy alleged 'terrorists' (think collateral damage on civilians or wrongly accused from missiles and UAV drones). Watch the interview, Obama does not answer one "why?" question of Lara Logan about the "necessity" of the "war on terrorism", he simply dodges and assumes its legitimacy without reason or debate. UNJUST WAR is the problem here. Where is the protest? The "war on terrorism" is not a true or legal constitutional war, and enabling Obama to do the same as Bush without criticism is hypocritical and partisan blindness. It has always been the goal to finish Iraq and legitimize and spread the war on terrorism. Note the media: War = Patriotism

POPSBush Wants Bin Laden "Dead or Alive"--Again! Right! Too bad he already died in Dec. 2001, which is why Bush suddenly lost interest ("I'm really not that concerned about one man"), and the CIA closed down its Bin Laden unit. Scenario: use UK Special Ops and UAV drones and fire a missile at a "safe house" near the Paki border, then claim to have killed Bin Laden--great propaganda! Especially if done before Sept. 11, 2008. It's all a lie, and Bush knows it, which is why he has been caught contradicting himself many times. Or, just ask the neocon contractors like SITE, let them track the websites of the "bin Laden videos" that keeping popping up before elections! Surely they could find the source of those videos, if they wanted. The FBI does not list 9/11 on Bin Laden's wanted poster, and they say "there is no hard evidence connecting bin Laden to 9/11".
