POPSNidal Hasan Bought A Para-Military Automatic Pistol With Armor-Piercing Capabilities
The FBI dispatched agents from Austin, San Antonio and Waco to the scene, and pressed into service a 15-member forensic unit to help military police collect evidence. Agents from the bureau's Washington field office interviewed relatives, neighbors and friends who knew Hasan during his years in the Washington area. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also are on hand to help with weapons analysis. Investigators also focused on Guns Galore, a firearms store just down the highway from the mosque. Store owner David Cheadle said federal agents interviewed him about the sale of a FN Herstal Five-Seven pistol that was used in the shootings. "It is a popular choice for personal defense," Cheadle said, pulling one from his case, "but it's expensive" -- more than $1,100 at his store. The officials said a continuing search of Major Hasan’s computer indicates that he had logged on to Web sites that celebrated radical Islamic ideologies and that he had....

POPSTobacco Underground
At a time when nations are increasingly trying to crack down on smoking, smugglers put cheap cigarettes into the hands of those most vulnerable — young people and the poor. In addition, the trade is pushing the supply steadily into the black market, selling cut-rate cigarettes of often dubious quality. Of special concern is the advent of a massive counterfeiting industry. Once a minor problem, today underground factories in China, Paraguay, and Eastern Europe manufacture literally billions of fake cigarettes — Marlboros, Camels, 555s, Mild Sevens — an uncontrolled industry that law enforcement is only beginning to grapple with. Many of the smokes are made from the lowest quality tobacco, full of stem and sawdust, and spiked with unusually high levels of nicotine. Other packs contain far worse. Tests reveal that counterfeit cigarettes carry a bevy of products that could further shorten even a heavy smoker’s life: metals such as cadmium, pesticides, arsenic, rat poison, and human feces.

POPSStay The Heck Out Of Tenn.-This Means You Bloomberg Gun show investigations showing how criminals can aquire guns without background checks upsets gun loving state officials in Virginia and Tennessee. Bloomberg is also under fire by Virginians in a new ad released by the National Rifle Association, too. But members of the Italian-American community say they feel targeted, as well. One part of the ad goes like this: "Our New York Mayor Bloomberg came down here to take away some of your Virginia gun rights. You see, the mayor thinks you guys are responsible for our New York crime problem." The ad also depicts an apparent Big Apple "wise guy" who strongly "suggests" voters not elect gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell, a gun rights activist. "I want you to do it for New York. If you know what's good for you," the ad says.

POPSGun-toting PA soccer mom, husband found shot dead
"Remember, there's no connection – and you would be a fool and a communist to make one – between having a gun and shooting somebody with it and not having a gun and not shooting somebody with it." – Bill Hicks More: Meleanie Hain made headlines after she attended her then 5-year-old daughter's soccer game in a park on Sept. 11, 2008, with her 9mm Glock pistol in plain view holstered on her hip, upsetting other parents. The county sheriff, Michael DeLeo, revoked her gun-carrying permit nine days later. Hain successfully appealed the permit revocation, although the judge who restored the permit questioned her judgment and said she had "scared the devil" out of other people at the game… DeLeo said at Hain's appeal that he revoked her permit after fielding the parents' complaints. He said he based his decision on a state law that prohibits certain gun permits from being given to anyone whose character and reputation make him or her a danger to public safety.

POPS8 Troops Killed In Afghanistan; Remote Outposts Attacked Nuristan, bordering Pakistan, was where a militant raid on another outpost in July 2008 claimed the lives of nine American soldiers and led to allegations of negligence by their senior commanders. Army Gen. David Petraeus last week ordered a new investigation into that fighting, in which some 200 militants armed with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars pushed their way into the base, which is no longer operating. The region was key for Arab militants who battled alongside Afghan warriors during the 1980s U.S.-backed war against invading Russians because it is a rare place in South Asia where the Wahhabi sect of Islam is practiced – the same sect followed by Osama bin Laden and most Saudis.

POPSHow To Kill New York SEPTEMBER 16, 2009: FBI agents with bomb-sniffing dogs Wednesday raided the Colorado apartment of an Afghan national linked to Al Qaeda and a plot to attack the New York City subway system.... In the past three days, the NYPD increased its attention to the subway system and its 5.2 million daily riders. Officers were warned to keep an eye out for vans near transportation hubs such as Grand Central, police sources said. The safety zone around subway and commuter stations also was expanded by two blocks, the sources said. Interesting little thought exercise - done in 2004

POPSBoks crumble 21-6 to Aussie Machine The Springboks showed their hand three minutes in when Steyn looked to draw level with a drop goal, but his rare miss saw the Australians cling to their slender advantage. In contrast, the Wallabies went in search of the try-line and looked to have scored when livewire scrum-half Genia caught the visitors napping off a free-kick, only to be denied by a desperate goal-line tackle from Fourie du Preez. The hosts were again denied on the line in the 61st minute when Jaque Fourie forced Giteau into touch. SHOOT: Grim.

POPSLaw Says Lighters are a Child Endangerment This is in the category of "Legislation for your own good". Why make a law to not sell something that is/was already legal? Why not just put responsibility on the owner of the lighter, or make it a law to keep it in your pocket or purse? What happened to the constitutional rights of citizens? Remember Life Liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Some of these items are collectibles as well. I am just so fed up with this petty legislation. When I here how backlogged the Oregon Legislature is all of the time, it really gets my blood boiling to think of what are they really doing down there in Salem? We have some real issues to deal with here. And don't smokers have enough to deal with, without telling us what we can or cannot light up with? Good grief! If you have kids, keep your guns, hand grenades, matches, machetes, firecrackers, and lighters away from them. Thank You.

POPSAfghanistan: US Soldiers Repel Complex Taliban Assault on Combat Outpost, Kill 22 Taliban Fighters....
The US Army counterattacked with "with counter fire, close air support and attack helicopters," according to a press release. Ten Haqqani Network fighters were killed and one was detained, the US military said. The Afghan Interior Ministry put the number of terrorists killed at 22, while some reports put the number killed at more than 30. The large number of enemy fighters killed during the counterattack indicates that an assault team was prepared to enter the combat outpost if the suicide bomber created a breach in the wall. Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan, took credit for the attack. Mujahid claimed that more than 8,000 kg of explosives were used in the attack. In the past, the Taliban, al Qaeda, and allied terror groups have conducted numerous attacks of this nature in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Yemen. The rocket attack is designed to cause the defending troops to take cover.

POPS“Mugabe, Schmugabe” Says Tsvangirai
When asked why three secret service officers were holding pistols to his temple while a fourth held a set of notes under his face, Tsvangirai stated “These guys? Pay them no mind. Bobby M hired them to look after me. He said that if anyone tried to assassinate me, they’d be up real close. So these guys are keeping their guns next to my face so scare them away. Honestly. Could we change the subject, please?” He went on to dismiss claims that he was being forced to read a prepared statement by Mugabe, claiming the papers were being thrust under his nose because “I forgot to order a lectern. My bad.” Mugabe praised Tsvingarai’s appointment, stating “This is a new day for the people of Zimbabwe. An era of trust and cooperation is upon us. I know I share my colleague’s fullest confidence as well as the support of his family, who are being housed in my maximum security enclave for their own protection.” He also refuted reports that news footage showed Tsvingarai mouthing the words “Please

POPSKentucky Pastor Tells Followers to Bring Guns to Church Of the 40 states with right-to-carry laws, 20 allow guns in churches. Watching the debate in Arkansas was John Phillips, pastor of the Central Church of Christ in Little Rock. In 1986, Mr. Phillips was preaching in a different church there when a gunman shot him and a parishioner. Both survived, but Mr. Phillips, 51, still has a bullet lodged in his spine. In a telephone interview, he said he found the idea of “packing in the pew” abhorrent.
