POPS"We ate (human) flesh to survive" continues: Famished and dehydrated They tried to sustain themselves on rain and seawater as they bobbed for days on the open waters, far off their original course. Famished and dehydrated, the survivors watched migrant after migrant die, each time dutifully waiting 15 to 20 minutes before throwing the body overboard. Eating those who perished was not an idea that came easily, the recuperating fisherman said. "But imagine, 15 days without food, without water. I'm a sailor, a fisherman — they were all yelling at me to do something," he said. "I always try to be prepared, so I had brought my knife along," he said. "We hadn't brought food because it was supposed to be a quick trip. We had nothing to eat. We had to eat him, to save our own lives." Maria Marizan and other migrants from the Dominican Republic know just how dangerous it can be to make the 160-mile journey across the Mona Passage to the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico.

POPSParliament to pass Whitsunday oil shale mining ban Easy in the current climate, but any pollution would wreck reefs etc along a very fertile stretch of water. Hopefully, if the planet is still habitable for humans, alternative energy sources will be in place in twenty years.

POPSThis Day In History ~ The Beginning Of The Long War It was just past 6 a.m., Oct. 23, 1983. Within a few minutes, Beirut, Lebanon, would be rocked by what was at the time the largest non-nuclear blast ever recorded. Twenty-five years ago today, at the height of the Lebanese civil war, Islamic terrorists drove a Mercedes-Benz truck packed with explosives through a barbed wire fence, past U.S. Marine Corps checkpoints and into the lobby of the Marine Corps barracks at Beirut International Airport. The resulting blast leveled the four-story building and trapped hundreds inside. Two hundred-twenty Marines, 18 sailors and three Army soldiers were killed. A few minutes later, a similar truck bomb went off at a nearby French barracks, killing 58. http://wvgazette.com/News/200810220656

POPSMarcella "Sali" Grace Eiler Raped and Murdered in Oaxaca
"Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca. Thursday, September 25 Justice for our sister Marcella Sali Grace! Brother and sisters, Our hearts are full of sadness and rage because our sister Sali was brutally raped and murdered 20 minutes from San Jose del Pacifico and up to this moment the Oaxacan Attorney General's Office, as is its custom, is not doing anything regarding the fact that there exist witnesses who have information to identify those responsible. Marcella Sali Grace was born in the United States, with a big heart in solidarity with just causes. She had many friend because she was always inclined to help, using her artistic talents to paint a banner or a wall or dancing Arabic dance to raise funds for the struggle, or putting on punk shows, or giving self-defense courses to the women because she knew very well how the men accosted them. This was one of her struggles, that women were free and respected. Sali was so involved in the struggle that she was an international accompan

POPSIs wind the new ethanol? I think the differences between wind and ethanol are pretty substantial, to put it mildly. But they do both enjoy subsidies (with the occasionally stated idea that eventually the subsidies will be withdrawn once these infant industries have matured.) There was a similar argument in Friday's Economist from a solar company executive who said that one problem with subsidies is that companies spend their time paying lobbyists to keep the subsidy rather than paying scientists to improve the technology. I'll clipmark that next.

POPSEurope's 'Earth Explorer' to Map Planet "Inside Out" From Space The five hundred million dollar satellite is expected to survive for 20 months - at twenty-five million a month that makes it even higher maintenance than Paris Hilton, but infinitely more useful. Data provided by the satellite will map everything from ocean depths to the magma core of the planet, providing data of unprecedented accuracy for everything from climate physics to geophysics. In an interesting coincidence, GOCE will be launched on the same day the Large Hadron Collider powers up. Project leader Kal-El urges readers not to pay too much attention to this, nor ask why the nose cone seems to be full of diapers and a red cape.

POPSInfertility In men, hormone disorders, illness, reproductive anatomy trauma and obstruction, and sexual dysfunction can temporarily or permanently affect sperm and prevent conception. Some disorders become more difficult to treat the longer they persist without treatment. The most common identifiable cause of infertility in men is varicocele. This is a condition of enlarged veins in the scrotum that causes abnormalities in the temperature regulation of the testis. If this temperature is elevated by even one degree, sperm and testosterone production are adversely affected. The good news though is that more than one-half of cases of male infertility can be corrected. Treatment may help a couple get pregnant through normal sexual intercourse. Even if you can't get pregnant in this way, you may not need expensive or invasive treatments to get pregnant.

POPSIslamic Iran's Effort To Wipe Out Dissent - Twenty-Nine Executed In One Day
IRAN HIDING UNCONTROLLED AIDS EPIDEMIC, WHILE EXECUTING DOZENS AT A TIME. Societal structure and conditions lead to incredibly greater infection by AIDS in the Islamic Iran population (similar to some African nations) because one third of Islamic Iran's population is drug addicted and shares needles. A far higher statistic than the government wants to admit and is (as usual) suppressing the information and the reliable source the two medical brothers provided in their expert and experienced capacity. Remember, one third of 70 million residents in Islamic Iran means OVER 20 MILLION addicted people, who for whatever reasons are vulnerable to contracting and transmitting AIDS and other infectious diseases. Islamic Iran has the highest proportion of Heroin addicts to population of any country in the world. pederasty definition ▸ noun: sexual relations between a man and a boy (usually anal intercourse with the boy as a passive partner)

POPSThe 10 Most Worthless College Majors Philosophy Why It Won’t Help You Get a Job: This isn’t ancient Greece: No one is going to pay you money, or allow you to sodomize their attractive son, in exchange for your knowledge of existence. Never has there been an employer who’s said “Man, we’re having all kinds of problems, I wish we had someone on our team who could reference and draw conclusions from the story of Siddhartha that would pull up our fourth quarter numbers.” I took many philosophy classes and it involved reading and smoking a shit pile of weed. You don’t need to pay 20,000 dollars a year to do that. All you need is twenty dollars and a library card. What Job You’ll End Up With: Thanks to your extensive knowledge of philosophy, you’re now self-aware enough to know that most jobs out there will make you totally miserable. So most likely you’ll wait tables part time and hope someone starts paying you for the bi-monthly entries on your blog.

POPSNext generation of marketing pros? For the record, I'm only 20, but I'm stunned at the difference a decade can make. Advertising didn't even become a tangible concept for me until I entered high school... for kids as young as ten to be this engaged with advertising techniques, it's a promising look at the future. Whether or not these kids grow up to embrace the industry is debatable, but one thing is for sure: smart consumers = smart advertising.

POPS20 Ex-Prosecutors Side with Congress in Subpoena Case The piece goes on: "If permitted to enforce its subpoenas for documents and testimony, Congress has a unique ability to address improper partisan influence in the prosecutorial process," the former prosecutors wrote. "No other institution will fill the vacuum if Congress is unable to investigate and respond to this evil." In other words, allow the subpoenas or the WH is above the law.

POPSThe Price of Gas Again, while just over nine percent of the price of a gallon of gas goes to oil company profits, approximately twenty percent of the price of a gallon of gas is composed of federal, state, and local taxes. Those who want the government to step in and do something about the high price of gas are either forgetful of recent history or too young to remember the oil crisis of 1979. During that time, restrictions on the price of gasoline led to the inability of some to find gas at all. Price ceilings always lead to shortages. The only thing worse than having to pay "too much" for gas is not being able to find gas at any price. Let us not be swayed by politicians out for power or by reporters out to create news where none exists. Facts and economic logic should prevail rather than rhetoric.
