Futuristic Excavation
balthazarus
by balthazarus  8-18-2008
However, Weyrich noted, Princeton's system will never replace the experience, contextual knowledge and "soft skills" that conservators and archaeologists bring to the table. "Reconstructing these frescoes is incredibly complex, given the condition of the fragments and the sheer number of fragments," said Weyrich. "The computer takes over the laborious parts of the process while leaving the important, intuitive decisions to the humans." i wonder when this will change as well.

Tracking the location of objects in your mind: It depends on what you believe
einbar
by einbar  8-10-2008    2
"Previously, many researchers had assumed that we are simply better at imagining objects staying in the same place, but this study demonstrates that when we truly believe an object is moving along with us, we can track it in our minds just as easily as if it was standing still".

Kreepsville Industries' Monster Shindig Blog
revenantdm
by revenantdm  7-14-2008
Some very nice sound files here to make your evening a little darker. Put the LP on the turntable (NOTE: Anyone born after 1983, that large disc in your hands with a tiny hole in the center is put on the round, spinning tray and the swing arm is placed easy on the groove in the record! I put that because I just had to explain to my niece what an LP was.) turn th lights down low, grab your ghoulfriend because with these graveyard goodies from the Bad Old Days will make you feel better about the fact you know what an 8-track is as well as what Hi-Fi stands for!

11 things you may not know about Star Wars
haraya
by haraya  8-4-2007    1
  - The trench that the rebels fly through isn't the one that runs around the equator of the Death Star. It's one of 18 vertical trenches that start halfway up from the equator and run toward the north pole. (p. 280) - The motion picture review board rated "Star Wars" a G, until the studio went back and demanded a PG rating. Also, some of the raters fell asleep during the screening. (p. 289) - Lucas and Steven Spielberg swapped profit points on their two movies, "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," each believing the other's would do better. (p. 298) - Twentieth Century Fox's stock jumped 450% immediately after the movie came out. (p. 301)

X-OOM Music clean - Convert audio to digital format
RobertsClips
by RobertsClips  5-17-2007
How many LPs and tapes have you still got? Isn't it time you transferred them to a digital format before the old equipment ceases to work or you no longer have it? I've tried Audacity but it's too techie for me. Anyone tried this product?

Rip your LPs to CD hassle-free with these turntables
enbar
by enbar  1-23-2007    1
A few relatively low-end turntables are on the market that have digital outputs built-in (prices range from $150 to $400). Quality is decent, says this review. You might finally listen to those old Foreigner records again.
