POPSBetter Keep It Under the Carpet ..... The Duchess of York may get jail over disclosing the awful conditions for orphaned children in Turkey. As this country wants to join EU it's very anxious not to lose face like this. However, if the truth is as pointed out by the duchess then that's what counts with other people, not the glossed over image that Turkey wants.

POPSTurkish police violence rises amid 'culture of impunity' Police felt free to commit violence because they believed themselves "untouchable", Roth said. "A culture of impunity prevails and we fear that culture lies behind this increase in police violence. "We have called on the government to take a series of steps that would replace this with a culture of accountability." Attempts at persuading officials during two days of talks in Ankara met stiff resistance, said Roth, particularly from the deputy prime minister, Cemil Cicek, who has special responsibility for human rights. Cicek reportedly attempted to justify police excesses by referring to alleged abuses in Europe, even citing Ireland's rejection of the EU constitution in a referendum last June.

POPSWorld peace hitcher is murdered This is a sad story. I imagine that Giuseppina was a really nice person, someone who would be a really good friend. But I think that this is a cautionary tale for travelers. Be open to new experiences, to new people, but be wise and use caution because as Giuseppina's sister said, "not everyone deserves trust."

POPSIsolated Turk Cypriots try to clean up image Over the decades various people sought by the police have fled to the TRNC, including Turkish Cypriot Asil Nadir, the tycoon behind the collapsed Polly Peck business empire whom Britain wants to try on fraud charges. The new money laundering law and a planned casinos law will help bolster the battle against organized crime. The TRNC, home to fewer than 200,000 people and subject to international trade restrictions, boasts more than 40 casinos, an important part of its allure for visitors from Turkey and southern Cyprus where gambling is prohibited. Iraqis, Palestinians and others enter the TRNC on a regular ferry service from Syria and then try to cross into the south to claim asylum in the EU. Many are deported as economic migrants

POPSHundreds arrested in Istanbul during May Day 30 years ago, on May 1st 1977, 34 people were killed at Taksim Square, Istanbul, during the May Day meeting, after some "unknown" provocators leaked in the crowd and created a panic. Today, the official state ideology and its despotic-minded defenders didn't even allow people to commemorate the victims at Taksim Square. Still a very long way to walk, towards democracy, free speech and tolerance.
