On Tuesday, Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Bob Corker (R-TN) introduced "The Federal Reserve Accountability Act," an attempt to kill HR 1207/S 604 by passing a bill that prevents a full audit and full transparency from America's secretive central bank. While language in this bill would permit a limited audit of the Fed's actions in the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and similar high profile bailouts, it would not allow an audit to review the Fed's inflation of the money supply or its agreements with foreign central banks, among other shortcomings. POPSLearning of the Battle of Oxford paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. They had to capture the city quickly; the F.B.I. had intelligence that thousands of Klansmen and segregationists from California to Georgia may have set off for Oxford, many of them armed. The first troops to reach Oxford found over 100 wounded federal marshals at the center of campus, 27 of them hit by civilian gunfire. Packs of hundreds of rioters swarmed the city, some holding war dances around burning vehicles. Snipers opened fire on the Army convoys and bricks struck the heads of American soldiers. Black G.I.'s in one convoy were ambushed by white civilians who tried to decapitate them in their open Jeeps with metal pipes.... ...The Army troops restored order to the school and the city, block by block. A girl watched a team of infantrymen under attack on the Oxford town square and, according to a reporter at the scene, wondered aloud, "When are they going to shoot back?"

A bill introduced by Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) would allow states to craft their own policies. POPSSenate Panel Foils Public Preview of Health Bill 
Moreover, two Democrats, Sens. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Charles Schumer of New York, are seeking to add a public insurance option to the bill. Such a plan is favored by many liberals but was substituted with nonprofit insurance cooperatives in the bill. The committee opened its second day of work on the bill after a clash over costs on Tuesday. Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa and other Republicans want to change the bill's mandate for individuals to have health insurance, which they say would be a burden on some people. Baucus altered parts of the bill on Tuesday in a bid to gain support from both sides. Key changes included cutting the maximum penalty for families that don't get health insurance, to $1,900 from $3,800 a year. Health-care economist Len Nichols of the New America Foundation said he thinks Snowe's trigger amendment may help get some other Republicans on board with the broader bill. But at least one Republican leader criticized the idea.

POPSSan Francisco test drives Universal Health Care: Result - Good More: The program, now in its third year, is proving popular. More than 43,000 people were enrolled as of June, up from 24,000 a year before. One reason for the jump: the income test for eligibility was relaxed in February to include people whose income was 500 percent of the poverty level--about $54,000 for a single person and $110,000 for a family of four. The program costs San Francisco about $280 per person per month. How are the results? Hospital admissions of plan members have dropped, and the average stay for those who wind up in the hospital has been cut almost in half, Varney reports. Those changes suggest chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, asthma and hypertension, are being managed better, reducing the need for crisis care.
