POPSBread Crumbs Bring the LHC to a Halt *LOL* The LHC has broken down AGAIN! The difficulties faced by those working on the project have prompted some members of the scientific community to speculate, in all seriousness, that the machine is sabotaging itself — from the future. The theory is that the particle that physicists hope to produce might be "abhorrent to nature," so that once created it would work backwards through time to put a stop to whatever created it. However Dr Mike Lamont, who works at the Cern control center, said that the nature of the experiment meant that glitches were inevitable. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,572567,00.html?test=latestnews

POPSThe True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle
The next day, Dennis said goodbye to Nubs, but he didn't forget about the dog. He began mentioning Nubs in emails he wrote to friends and family back home. "I found a dog in the desert," Dennis wrote in an email in October 2007. "I call him Nubs. We clicked right away. He flips on his back and makes me rub his stomach." "Every couple of weeks, we'd go back to the border fort and I'd see Nubs every time," says Dennis. "Each time, he followed us around a little more." And every time the men rumbled away in their Humvees, Nubs would run after them. On one trip to the border fort in December 2007, Dennis found Nubs was badly wounded in his left side where he'd been stabbed with a screwdriver. "The wound was infected and full of pus," Dennis recalls. "We pulled out our battle kits and poured antiseptic on his wound and force fed him some antibiotics wrapped in peanut butter." That night, Nubs was in so much pain that he refused food and water and slept standing up.

POPSAmerican with AK-47 says he fights off attack in Kabul... Interesting article. I'm sure the media will at some point determine if this story is true since those who escaped have been evacuated. He is 62 and according to his father had fought with the Afghans against the Russians so he's been there quite some time.

POPSSomething to think about…. 45 minutes: The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32. 1 hour: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100. This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.

POPSPolitico and Scarborough Figure Out The Obama White House’s Fox News War Tactic
WARNING: THIS POST IS NOT APPROVED BY WHITE HOUSE CENSORS! “And then you had a couple days of breast-beating from The Washington Post and The New York Times about whether or not they were fast enough on the ACORN story,” the official said. To some media observers, it’s almost the definition of a “chilling effect” " a governmental attempt to steer reporters away from negative coverage " but the White House press corps has barely uttered a word of complaint. Fox denies its news coverage is slanted, and even White House aides say the network’s top correspondent there, Major Garrett, is a straight shooter. But in its non-news hours, Fox mixes in a steady diet of criticism of President Barack Obama by its prominent conservative commentators Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck. It’s a formula that works for Fox, with the highest ratings in cable news. A day after White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Obama senior adviser David Axelrod said other journalists .

POPS Afghanistan Syndrome Asad and Tahir would be the first ones to die. As the months dragged on, I grew to detest our captors. I saw the Haqqanis as a criminal gang masquerading as a pious religious movement. They described themselves as the true followers of Islam but displayed an astounding capacity for dishonesty and greed. Whole thing. I hope Obama, Emanuel, Axelrod, Biden, Reid, Levin, Pelosi, etal, are paying attention. You know, between Filkins and Rohde, I’m starting to warm up to the Times a little. At least until the next al-Qaeda early warning system alert goes up. What’s going on … when even the AP’s Kabul bureau seems to be starting to get it? * Though maybe not as far from Stockholm, New York, your town as some people would like to think. Yes, we’re still having this conversation in 2009.

POPSIf you want to tell a story you have to know the code.
The following clip from an interview Samir Husni did with Bob Guccione Jr. betrays a what I see as a key blind spot in the the contemporary journalistic field of vision - a notion that story telling is somehow a non-technical act. If I had to guess I'd say that this notion is fed by these journalists coming of age in a time when the dominant tools of their trade - the technology that drove their stories for centuries - was fundamentally invisible. This invisibility mislead them into thinking that the art of story telling was somehow a ethereal act of creation - as mysterious and graceful as human existence - something that spewed forth from the muse - natural, organic, and clean. This mistaken assumption makes me think of a recent essay by Douglas Rushkoff in which he writes: <blockquote>Like those failed media renaissances before this one, we remain one step behind the capability actually being offered us. Only an elite"sometimes a new elite, but an elite nonetheless"ga

POPSThe Real Columbus Story. I learned awhile back what a ruthless cruel man Christopher Columbus was. He was no hero but the history books continue to paint him that way. Why? Is it because the Christopher Columbus myth has taken a life of its own and cannot be dispelled? Human beings love fantasy. We love to be lifted, if only for a short period, out of our humdrum lives. We also love answers, even if most of the answers we are given by historians don't hold water, we will still cling to them. It makes me wonder that maybe in the not so far off future when we are all trying to survive the Global Warming Effects, history books will claim that the George W Bush era helped save our planet by getting rid of billions of poor people so that the wealthiest will have a better chance at survival. All the rich kids will read about their savior "W" while they bask in the sun at the seashores of South Dakota and Kansas on their George W Bush day off. No different from today.
