The following clip from an interview Samir Husni did with Bob Guccione Jr. betrays a what I see as a key blind spot in the the contemporary journalistic field of vision - a notion that story telling is somehow a non-technical act. If I had to guess I'd say that this notion is fed by these journalists coming of age in a time when the dominant tools of their trade - the technology that drove their stories for centuries - was fundamentally invisible. This invisibility mislead them into thinking that the art of story telling was somehow a ethereal act of creation - as mysterious and graceful as human existence - something that spewed forth from the muse - natural, organic, and clean. This mistaken assumption makes me think of a recent essay by Douglas Rushkoff in which he writes: <blockquote>Like those failed media renaissances before this one, we remain one step behind the capability actually being offered us. The warmongers and hatemongers want distractions and smear. While one of the most extraordinary and exciting speech I have ever heard took place, I see more stories about failed efforts to stop Gadhafi from setting up a tent. This clip, for example, spent half it's time on that tent non-issue and falsefly claimed it was successful. But no, Gadhafi got to put up his tent, made his speech and despite all the poor translation, smears of it being "rambling," confused, outrageous, etc. -- he got his points across and apparently the web is abuzz about it. The headline of this clip for example, said the speech at the UN "confused," -- but that was not true. It made several clear points. -- especial the very clear point that five nations always having veto power over Security Council resolutions was unfair. D'uh. Other proposed UN charter reforms were suggested. Also talk about the terrorism of nations with nukes, imperialism, colonialism evils, etc. - all valid. & so

POPSSubstance or Teenage Angst? If the allegations are true it would be criminal to disregard them. Yet, the more I follow this story the more I lean to the idea that this is a case of a teenage girl who is confused and has taken steps that make it difficult for her to retract. The most disturbing news to come out of the whole drama is the inclusion of the lawyer who was elemental in the political debauchery surrounding the Terri Schiavo case. The conservatives in Florida seem to have a natural talent of stepping in a pile of dog poo and then flinging it at anyone close by. Considering the underlying mistrust of Muslims that brews among conservatives this incident has the earmarks of being capable of evolving into a major political slime-fest.

Whatever he produces is guaranteed to sell, regardless of quality, thanks to his established fanbase. Not all creators actually appreciate the help they've received from the editors. As far as they're concerned, these short-sighted editors have been holding them back from true greatness. They might not actively think this, but getting a fanbase and thus lots of positive feedback gives some people a swelled head.
