POPSFirst Nations Meet with President Obama - 400 tribes The last such meeting - of this size - took place more than one hundred years ago. Let's hope much progress is made and that more than 200 years of shameful exploitation by Washington of the tribal nations takes a positive path now.

The killing, enslavement, and land theft had begun with the arrival of the Europeans. But it may have reached its nadir when it became federal policy under President (Andrew) Jackson.

POPSUnited Nations of America to meet in Nov. 7th Huh? You say - smile. Well not entirely accurate, I guess but what else would you call a meeting between the President and all the recognized Native American Tribes (Nations) on November 7th. At the very least, it's a good step forward in making up for 230 years plus of broken promises between our national government and the daughters and sons of the first inhabitants of this land. Now that I think of it, we are all immigrants right?

The fundamental problem in Afghanistan is that it isn't a country in the way the West thinks of countries, said retired Lt. Gen. Ruslan Aushev, who did two tours there and left as a regimental commander. "There has never been any real centralized state in Afghanistan. There is no such nation as Afghanistan," said Aushev, who's a former president of the Russian Caucasus republic of Ingushetia and now heads a veterans group in Moscow. "There are (ethnic groups of) Pashtuns, Uzbeks and Tajiks, and they all have different tribal policies." As a result, any occupation force will spend much of its time propping up a government that has little relevance outside Kabul and trying to corral disparate ethnic groups and tribes into a national army that's often unwilling to fight, Aushev said.

The government’s appearance before CERD was heavily criticised by organisations in Peru. CERD had asked the government to provide information about a number of issues that it ignored, including efforts to protect the rights of uncontacted tribes and controversial comments made by Peru’s president Alan Garcia in a Peruvian newspaper. Survival director, Stephen Corry, said today, ‘We urge President Garcia to put an end, once and for all, to its policy of carving up the Amazon without the consent of the people who actually live there.’"
