It's a great series of photographs. I can't seem to find out by whom though. I like the idea of it...though I'm not too sure about covering up the actual landmark itself....maybe something alongside it instead....but still a great idea. EDIT: Michael Hughes ....found him!!! Voila his Flickr page.

Photos from a trip across Siberia in January 2006, when the average temperature was -60F. Just thinking of this numbing cold makes my bones ache, but the photos are lovely. Grab a cup of your favorite warm beverage and take a look at these photos of winter in Siberia.

The survey concluded that "high levels of organic atheism are strongly correlated with high levels of societal health, such as low homicide rates, low poverty rates, low infant mortality rates, and low illiteracy rates, as well as high levels of educational attainment, per capita income, and gender equality. In some societies, particularly Europe, atheism is growing. However, throughout much of the world -- particularly nations with high birth rates -- atheism is barely discernable."

Scientists Make Radio Waves Travel Faster Than Light
chestnut501
by chestnut501  6-30-2009    8
A Los Alamos National Laboratory gadget, called a polarization synchrotron, combines radio waves and a rapidly spinning magnetic field, which forces radio waves to travel faster than the speed of light. The resulting phenomenon could lead to new technologies in health and communications.

New hyperspace engine could roundtrip Mars in 5 hours
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-31-2008    5
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics awards prizes for the best papers presented each year. Last year’s winner went to a paper authored by physicist Jochem Hauser, calling for experimental tests of Heim’s theory. “This hyperdrive motor,” Hauser said, “would propel a craft through another dimension at enormous speeds. It could reach a star eleven light years away in just eighty days.”

String Theory Faster-Than-Light Drive Proposed
Silkweaver

Dreams of interstellar travel may need to be put on hold for the moment, however. Cleaver and Obousy estimate that the amount of energy needed to influence the extra dimension is equivalent to the entire mass of Jupiter being converted into pure energy for a ship measuring roughly 10 meters by 10 meters by 10 meters. "That is an enormous amount of energy," Cleaver said. "We are still a very long ways off before we could create something to harness that type of energy." But what if we could make ourselves very very small??? I am ready to squeeze myself quite a bit to get really far... :-)

Four Reasons Not to Give Up on Interstellar Travel
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-23-2008
It looks far, dark, and cold... Yet, 120 years ago, flight was science fiction as well. C. G. Jung said that all dreams of space travel are just an escape from one most difficult challenge of all, that is the journey to man's inner space. :-) ...and see my clip from last week on suggested FTL drive. It seems the motivation to escape an inner journey just grows.

Time Travel in the Brain
pokkets
by pokkets  1-7-2008    3
Perhaps areas that are lit up are where new pathways are being formed, and dark areas are where old pathways are 'studied' or remembered. Where, while the brain may not literally be able to 'see' the future, our choices are being refined, by the projection of possible outcomes of choices, based on past experience.

Rocket Scientists Say We'll Never Reach the Stars
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-23-2008    8
Even the most theoretically efficient type of propulsion, an imaginary engine powered by antimatter, would still require decades to reach Alpha Centauri, according to Robert Frisbee, group leader in the Advanced Propulsion Technology Group within NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. And then there's the issue of fuel. It would take at least the current energy output of the entire world to send a probe to the nearest star

New spaceship force field makes Mars trip possible
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  11-4-2008
Now this has been confirmed in the laboratory in the UK using apparatus originally built to work on fusion. By recreating in miniature a tiny piece of the Solar Wind, scientists working in the laboratory were able to confirm that a small "hole" in the Solar Wind is all that would be needed to keep the astronauts safe on their journey to our nearest neighbours. Dr. Ruth Bamford, one of the lead researchers at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, said, "These initial experiments have shown promise and that it may be possible to shield astronauts from deadly space weather".

The A-B-C-D-E of Travel Photography
Aribeth
by Aribeth  10-14-2009
At first glance, the picture above depicts a nun walking. But as you look at more details within the picture, you get a full sense of where she is. She isn’t carrying a bag or other personal effects which suggests she is someplace familiar. The direction and length of her shadow suggests mid to late afternoon, and the Slavic-type text on the walls suggests somewhere in Central or Eastern Europe. So the picture transports you to a monastery or nunnery in Eastern Europe around late afternoon. __________________________________ Ever glanced in exasperation at travel photographs wondering why yours taken of the same landscapes or subjects never turn out as stunning? Great travel photographs share a few similarities even though their subjects may be as different as a sweeping landscape or a brooding portrait. Above are a few primer concepts that will guarantee better travel shots from even a simple point-and-shoot camera.
