Blackpool not disabled friendly.
notareargunner
by notareargunner  7-18-2008
The evidence is overwhelming. Carrying on from the woeful Labour regime, this soporific administration has done nothing for the disabled. When the National Servicemen told the Council that the organisation for their disabled members was inadequate, they were attacked. Try getting an 18 stone former regular soldier onto a bur with his wheel chair. As often as not you cannot, because their is a pram already on the bus. The Disabilities Act requires the Transport Authorities to make available disabled spaces. Only Stagecoach in this area enforces the Law and requires young adults to fold away their carriages and sit their children on their laps. I would love to be able to do this with the 18 stone gentleman, but I cannot. All the disabled ask for is their RIGHTS underwritten in Law. Unfortunately, it is not the young parent who is the pariah, but it is usually the elderly who have no conception of what it is like to be imprisoned in a wheel-chair, the problems that carers have

Paper Bags or Plastic Bags? Everything You Need to Know
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-9-2008    6
So, while it's good to have the alternative (and to recognize the innovation it represents), bioplastics aren't quite ready to save us from the paper or plastic debate. Paper bags or plastic bags: the conclusion Both paper and plastic bags require lots and lots of resources and energy, and proper recycling requires due diligence from both consumer and municipal waste collector or private recycling company, so there are a lot of variables that can lead to low recycling rates. Ultimately, neither paper nor plastic bags are the best choice; we think choosing reusable canvas bags instead is the way to go. From an energy standpoint, according to this Australian study, canvas bags are 14 times better than plastic bags and 39 times better than paper bags, assuming that canvas bags get a good workout and are used 500 times during their life cycle. Happy shopping!

Room temperature superconductivity: One step closer to the Holy Grail of physics
Mohir
by Mohir  7-9-2008
The researchers have discovered where the charge 'hole' carriers that play a significant role in the superconductivity originate within the electronic structure of copper-oxide superconductors. These findings are particularly important for the next step of deciphering the glue that binds the holes together and determining what enables them to superconduct.

Military veterans to get free transport?
notareargunner
by notareargunner  7-9-2008
Read these proposals carefully. In England no-one has yet answered the question, what happens when this three year moratorium on free travels ends? As laudable as this scheme appears, is this not just another sop at the gullible Scottish electorate?

Brits suffer from metal theft
hayesstw
by hayesstw  7-8-2008
For a long time South Africans have suffered from metal theives. A few months ago we were without electricity for two days, not because of Eskom load shedding, but because of cable theft. Twenty years ago the aluminium railings were nicked from a railway bridge down the road, over four separate nights, and no one heard a thing. Cell phones have mitigated the inconvenience of telephone cable theft, but it can still disrupt Internet access. And many have been late for work because of the theft of railway signal cables. Now, it seems, the Brits are suffering from the same problem. Will it rile up even the phlegmatic Brits so much that they'll start burning railway carriages and stations when the trains are late?
