POPSTobacco Underground
At a time when nations are increasingly trying to crack down on smoking, smugglers put cheap cigarettes into the hands of those most vulnerable — young people and the poor. In addition, the trade is pushing the supply steadily into the black market, selling cut-rate cigarettes of often dubious quality. Of special concern is the advent of a massive counterfeiting industry. Once a minor problem, today underground factories in China, Paraguay, and Eastern Europe manufacture literally billions of fake cigarettes — Marlboros, Camels, 555s, Mild Sevens — an uncontrolled industry that law enforcement is only beginning to grapple with. Many of the smokes are made from the lowest quality tobacco, full of stem and sawdust, and spiked with unusually high levels of nicotine. Other packs contain far worse. Tests reveal that counterfeit cigarettes carry a bevy of products that could further shorten even a heavy smoker’s life: metals such as cadmium, pesticides, arsenic, rat poison, and human feces.

POPSAmerica’s First Zero Carbon Mass Transit Shuttle Compared to diesel or CNG buses, their buses have low maintenance costs, low operation costs, zero tailpipe emissions, and can reach a zero carbon footprint if powered by renewable energy sources. There will be a presentation/demonstration of the technology at American University in D.C. on Wednesday, October 21. They will be showcasing the following: - The 15-foot minibus showcased will be the first electric vehicle in the country powered completely by ultracapacitors. - Two dozen full-size ultracapacitor buses have been in commercial operation in Shanghai, China for the past three years. - The ultracapacitor vehicle demonstration is a combined effort of American University, Sinautec Automobile Technologies, The Stella Group, and Shanghai Aowei Technologies Corp.

POPSStudy shows longer parking meter hours good for city, businesses More: In the East Bay, Emeryville meters operate 24-7, and Walnut Creek runs some meters until 11pm, according to jaded's comment on a previous InOakland blog . And while not every commercial district in Oakland is as successful as those in San Francisco, an Oakland study would certainly find that many streets need parking meters to operate well after 6pm to ensure available parking for customers. Last night I had dinner in Old Oakland at a restaurant that was almost empty. At 10pm, the more than 100 street parking spaces visible from 9th and Washington included exactly one vacant space. It doesn't appear that the Oakland City Council will have a report and data-driven study on parking practices before their Oct. 6 meeting, when rolling back meter hours will again be discussed. But I think we all know what a study would say.

POPSHigh court says California can't raid transit funds More: In their latest budget action, the governor and the Legislature approved a plan in July to close a $24 billion deficit, in part by siphoning $138 million from the public transit account to the Department of Developmental Services to pay for transporting developmentally disabled persons to regional centers. The July plan also counted on taking $254 million from public transit to repay transportation bond debt payments. In addition, the plan counted on shifting $622 million in transit funds to the general fund to pay for the previous year's debt service. The refusal of the Supreme Court to hear the appeal could push California's precariously balanced budget immediately into the red. Before losing this lawsuit, the state was already $200 million short.

POPSA post by @steverubel helps me clarify my thoughts on bound/unbound media.
All spokes and no hub - I love that. It's also one of the truest, most insightful, and accurate statements I've read in a while. The destination web is dying - at least for content producers. I think I have pounded this drum before but I think it's a point that needs pounding. The following is cut from an email exchange I had recently (in relation to this article) - it outlines a misreading that I think most legacy publishers are caught in the throes of - namely the misreading of the bound to unbound media shift as a print to digital shift: ---------------- Thinking of the transition that's underway as a shift from print to digital is dangerously misleading. This is more than a simple shift in output technology - it's a slow yet dramatic rewiring of the information ecology in such a way that the previous command and control model becomes less effective and less profitable with each passing day. In order to combat that traditional media companies should re-frame the transit

POPS Three Accomplices in Terror Plot Identified Prosecutors have said the three others who shopped with him in Aurora, Colo., for the beauty products also accompanied him on an August 2008 flight to Pakistan for terrorism training. By that time, he had already come to authorities' attention. A criminal complaint has suggested that police acting without the FBI's knowledge might have compromised the investigation and helped blow the surveillance of Zazi by questioning a Muslim religious leader about him. The imam and Zazi's father face charges of lying to terrorism investigators; they deny the allegations. As authorities have continued to search for additional suspects, they've issued a flurry of terrorism warnings for sports complexes, hotels and transit systems based on their investigation. POPSPlease let this be the future of travelling by plane Having just survived 2 24-hour transit times in less than 30 days (and uncomfortable ones at that), this just really grabbed my attention and sounds absolutely fascinating. I just hope that the seats recline a bit more.... More at the source, as well as the plans for first and business classes

POPSA Bus Named Gutlessness Congress figured it out in about five minutes, as demonstrated by the hogwild porkfest on the stimulus. The American electorate has been a little slower on the uptake, but polls numbers suggest they are getting it. Maybe not specifically the unprincipled, disloyal gutlessness, but the results of it: The American people hate a loser. This should make it fun. USA Today : Mass transit dispatcher Pelosi, public option “essential” to passage. Here’s Krugman, one of the most prominent advocates of expanding government … a.k.a “socialism” in the current political argot … in America today, wringing his hands over the under-the-busification of the public option. Michael Gerson at RCP. Great headline, “Obama’s Crisis: Credibility” Ambinder , surveying the wreckage and declaring the train to be running on time. Sorry to mix metaphors, but the bus he keep throwing people and things under just stalled at a crossing. Here comes the 5:35 to Naked Self-Interest.
