POPSMarin Urban Search & Rescue Team: Ready, willing, and able To paraphrase Firefly , "What's that make them? Big damn heroes! " More: They can't just roll the pipes off because its likely there will be so much debris in a real disaster that rolling will be impossible. Instead they inflate rubber and kevlar bags, sort of ultra-balloons. The bags are attached to an air tank and when inflated, can support a huge amount of weight ranging from two tons with the smaller bag to a mammoth 37 tons using the large bag! It takes about ten minutes to free the 'grateful' dummy. The collaborative training provided by Novato Fire District, Marin USAR and the State of California Office of Emergency Services, mirrors the collaboration in the field. When disaster strikes, multiple agencies respond and they need to work seamlessly together. That's why this type of training is so important.

POPSAfghanistan is not Iraq, Viet Nam, or Cleveland Seems as though we have to learn and relearn the most common of military lessons. Seems someone has not even watch the iconic Eastwood flick "Heartbreak Ridge" on how to survive and win "You're Marines now. You adapt. You overcome. You improvise," says Eastwood's character. As several marines, one US and one Aussie, advised about the same topic: Trust the terrain, not the map. The plan calls for training Afghans to fight the fight we want them to fight and the way we would fight it. People who care about each other, innovate, adapt, and overcome win - or at least don't lose because they took the advise of someone 10,000 miles away with no eyes on the ground and butt on the line.

POPSGraduates Join Up because of the economy “Joining the military is a big life decision. … If you’re joining the military because of (the economy), you’re probably not going to make it too far.” ( More people signing up with the military because they can't find a job ? How can our government pay them without getting more tax money out of us?? The ones that are already in the military are already struggling to survive themselves...it takes a lot to shelter, feed, clothe a family...the only real benefit is free health care ( I wouldn't doubt that they would cut this out in order to pay all the new trainees) Who knows?

POPSHow brain chemicals can help soldiers keep their head
most potent protective factor, however, is a neurotransmitter called neuropeptide Y (NPY), which binds to receptors on neurons in the prefrontal cortex and alters their response to noradrenaline, acting as a brake to its accelerator pedal. The most intriguing implication of Morgan's research, however, is the suggestion that supplementing levels of DHEA or NPY could enhance soldiers' ability to think straight in the heat of battle - and perhaps also offer some protection against PTSD. The brain needs a large amount of energy to function, and in the food and sleep-deprived SERE trainees, the glucose proved effective at boosting their mental acuity. The following morning, those given the carbohydrate drinks performed significantly better on the Stroop test (Military Medicine, vol 174, p 132). Giving troops energy-rich drinks is one thing, but the idea of intervening with drugs to enhance military performance is more controversial, as reactions to another proposal have shown.

POPS"old identifiable diseases" like the plague Caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, plague is primarily a disease of wild rodents that is spread by their fleas. It can be transmitted to humans by flea bites or contact with animals infected with the bacterium. The disease's least common but most deadly form, pneumonic plague, can be inhaled and transmitted between humans without involvement of animals or fleas. If you can recognise it fast enough you can contain it," says Philippa Strong, a PhD student at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. During the second sino-japanese war, plague was used as a bacteriological weapon by the Imperial Japanese Army. These weapons were provided by Shirō Ishii's units and used in experiments on humans before being used on the field. For example, in 1940, the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service bombed Ningbo with fleas carrying the bubonic plague.
