POPSThe next Vice President Whether she deserves it or not, Palin is making the US the laughing stock of the world. Personally, I am amazed that America is so bereft of people with leadership skills, that she got the nod. Much more to this story. Maybe she will be a model for the guards in the detention centres.

POPSRolling Over to Rescue the Bailout
contAll of cable and the networks are rolling over for their bellies to be scratched, helping the dodge that the bailout supporters were not really asking for a bailout, only a rescue. See? There was a great deal of hyperventilating last night on most of the talkies and news, sort of an "Oh No! What have we done!" chorus: We misnamed the rescue a bailout. Missing from this steady stream of thumb-sucking was any mention of the substantive reasons voters were outraged. What precisely was in the bailout bill for taxpayers, homeowners, renters? Was there any real cap on the greedy executive compensation packages? Investment in job creation? Rescue for homeowners in foreclosure? Along with the Oh No What Have We Done is the mantra of The Great Credit Freeze: small businesses won't be able to meet payroll; 401k and pension funds are cascading in value; there may not even be money in the ATM machine. The media herd, incredulous that its losing supporters of the bailout, is re-tool

POPSWoolworths wants your data You could see this one coming. I've skipped the card and just take the receipt with the petrol discount. I reckon my data's worth more than 4 cents.

POPSChristopher Coan Update If you are reading this, it's because you actually care about missing children and persons, so PLEASE take a moment and visit Myspace for Chris Coan. Even if you don't have any tips, a simple "good luck with the search" OR "You're in my thoughs and prayers," could make a world of difference to family members searching for Chris.

POPSArms Trade Flows Freely According to US state department figures this week, Iraq has signed more than $3bn worth of arms deals in the past two years. Amnesty estimates that more than 1m small arms have been sold to Iraq since the 2003 invasion and the Iraqi government plans to procure more than 250,000 from the US and China. And the irresponsible war profiteering continues. Russia has agreed to supply 27 helicopters to Sudan, says Amnesty. Last year, Sudan listed its main arms suppliers as China, Russia, North Korea, Belarus, Indonesia, Iran and Malaysia. Some of these weapons are being used by Al Qaeda against U.S. troops. Is there no better reason to halt this illegal/immoral war?

POPSLipstick Republican Women For Sarah! & Nice Pictures, Too McCain-Palin On Wall Street Crisis Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 9:45 AM The latest McCain-Palin ad shows a willingness to run with the news cycle, not against it. With shudders running through Wall Street that are felt by anyone with a 401(k), Team McCain releases an ad that says experience and real reform credentials trump the puffed up rhetoric of the community organizer and the senator from MNBA. It is very effective because it reminds people that real crises aren't solved on teleprompters Mike Allen reviews the intersection of the banking crisis and the campaigns, but McCain is a full march ahead of Obama, again. POPSObama's Campaign Touts Nuclear Bill's Failed Attempt the issue of unreported leaks. Weakened with revisions "Senator Obama's staff was sending us copies of the bill to review, and we could see it weakening with each successive draft," said Joe Cosgrove, a park district director in Will County, Ill., where low-level radioactive runoff had turned up in groundwater. "The teeth were just taken out of it." Since 2003, executives and employees of Exelon, which is based in Illinois, have contributed at least $227,000 to Obama's campaigns for the U.S. Senate and for president Asked why Obama had cited it as an accomplishment while campaigning for president, the campaign noted that after the senator introduced his bill, nuclear plants started making such reports on a voluntary basis. The campaign did not directly address the question of why Obama had told Iowa voters that the legislation had passed.

POPSEvolution in a Bottle Over time the bacteria evolved to better suit their environment, adapting to replicate faster on the all-glucose diet. But one colony suddenly took off, consuming the previously indigestible citrate - a molecule that literally would not fit through the original bacteria's membrane. A new breed of E. Coli had evolved to consume the available resources and, over a multi-generational evolutionary battle, came to outperform the original glucose eaters. Because of the daily samples, there is now a complete genetic paper trail of the changes (although full identification and understanding of the changes will take a little longer). This is an incredible breakthrough in evolutionary research, and a pretty nice argument to break out in the creationism 'debates' ("Prove evolution!" "Okay, I've got it right here IN THIS BOTTLE!")

POPSMcCain-Palin Faces Blowback for Dishonest Campaign Wasserman-Schultz is Dem. Senator Debbie Wasserman-Schultz of Florida. As I've been pointing out to anyone who'll listen, McCain enjoyed a post-convention bump and a bump from choosing Palin and he only managed a tie. The Palin honeymoon's winding down, so expect McCain to start polling lower. Add the fact that the media is finally reporting that McCain's campaign is a pack of lies and things don't look good for that side.
