POPSFamily Details Troubled Life Of Man Behind Rampage But then, he said, a Jewish watchdog group stole her away in the dead of night and returned her to her family. Shortly afterward, he was sent to prison for a year, for what other family members and police said were drug-related charges. “The problems started after he was in jail. After he came out of jail, he was always alone. … He is a good man, but after prison, he was confused and nervous,” his cousin said. However, his family arranged a marriage with a young woman from his village, and they now have two young sons. Israeli police spent Wednesday afternoon interrogating his family but then left, and have said they believe he was acting alone.

POPSAiming For A More Moderate Image It's definitely a step in the right direction but will it go like this quote from the article: "Then it becomes about anger and pride. It becomes the negative motivation of trying to say what we are not.: I personally commend former President Carter for trying to promote social justice. I DON'T think it's a "lost cause". I just doubt that some Southern Baptists are going into this with an open mind. But Jimmy Carter is never going to give up and that is what makes him such a special person.

POPS Hillary Snubbs Sikh Community's Celebration Mr. Virk complained that the talk of a security problem was contributing to perceptions that Sikhs are suspect. "I'd like to hear from Hillary Clinton giving an explanation. Now, it's our reputations on the line," he said. "We're Americans and we're here to stay forever." Indeed, American flags were on prominent display yesterday as several thousand Sikhs, some of them barefoot, paraded near a Bakersfield temple. Women in saris swept the streets ahead of the crowd and a float which carried a religious text. Sikh adherents handed out free bananas, Doritos, water, and pizza to marchers as well as non-Sikh onlookers who spilled out of the nearby subdivisions to catch a glimpse of the parade. Many of the Sikh men carried ceremonial daggers, often hidden under their clothes. Some who led the parade brandished swords. However, participants said the ritual weapons did not justify Mrs. Clinton's absence.

POPSEtherial Culture Trups Marxist Materialism More important than the political or economic failures of Marxism, I am struck by it's philosophical failures. Societies boldest and bloodiest push to eradicate superstition and a belief in the intangible nevertheless fails within the period of a single lifetime. Traditional cultures that Marx derided as primitive and oppressive inevitably re-assert themselves, but why? I think it is because Marx missed the extremely nuanced subtlety of their appeal, and that these "primitive" institutions are in fact far more complex than Marx could appreciate. It is the cynicism and condescension in Marxism that in the end turns out to be "primitive." It fails to appreciate that other ideologies have been changing, evolving and surviving for thousands of years, developing potent appeal and a certain degree of metaphysical truth.

POPSPhilippine Independence Day celebrated only by a few This is a more serious clip for me... For international clippers, the holiday economics policy of President Arroyo is to move certain holidays that fall on Thursdays or Tuesdays to Fridays or Mondays, respectively, so that the weekend becomes longer. Sure, it's economical, but I still believe that a bit of the meaning of the holiday itself is lost. It really gets to me when President Arroyo stresses economic development and progress and considers them the key to lifting our countrymen out of poverty (see her speech in the article). In my opinion, the government should focus more on education. Economic development primarily benefits those who are educated - and in this country, those who belong to the upper classes. Should the government pursue this line of thinking, the rich will only get richer, and the poor poorer, as they say.

POPSThe Rite Time Yes, sad but true. Catholics everywhere have been anticipating the release of a document allowing a freer celebration of the Tridentine Mass. But from what I've learned so far it really doesn't matter. Because as far as I know the Old rite was never suppressed. In 1986 Pope John Paul appointed a commission of nine Cardinals to examine the legality of the Tridentine Latin Mass. The nine Cardinals were asked two questions: 1. Did Pope Paul VI authorize the bishops to forbid the celebration of the traditional Mass? 2. Does the priest have the right to celebrate the traditional Mass in public and in private without restriction, even against the will of the bishop? The Commission answered in private, that: 1. Pope Paul VI did not forbid the celebration of the Tridentine Latin Mass 2. Priests are in no way obligated the celebrate the New Rite of Mass 3. Bishops cannot place any restrictions on the celebration of the Old Rite of Mass. So there, having said it check out t
