We do not protect our water as well as we should but we do a better job than most of the areas we are importing fish from, I believe. Wonder if they sell portable kits so you could test your meal before ordering at Red Lobster is you still kill fish - er eat fish. Sorry, I am a vegan - grin.

Protect against toxic chemicals
kareval
by kareval  10-28-2009    1
I am shocked and deeply disturbed that the law that is supposed to protect Americans from exposure to toxic chemicals is so outdated that China is allowed to export toxic materials into the United States that are not only banned in Japan and Europe, but can't even be used domestically in China. Every American alive today, including newborn babies, has hundreds of chemicals flowing through their blood. Many of these chemicals are linked to prostate and breast cancers, diabetes, heart disease, lowered sperm counts, early puberty and other diseases and disorders. Yet, of the 82,000 chemicals available for use in the U.S., only about 200 have been required to be tested for safety. And the EPA has succeeded in banning only one group of chemicals, PCBs, from the marketplace. It's time to reform the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). I urge you to support legislation that will: view more 1. Take immediate action to stop the use of the most dangerous toxic chemicals; 2. Give

Monsanto guilty in 'false ad' row
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  10-17-2009    2
Earlier this month, Monsanto reported a fourth quarter loss of $233m (£147m), driven mostly by a drop in sales of its Roundup brand. It would be quite a result if this led to some of their other products like Aspartame being investigated publicly.

Organic Mattress
sharedideas
by sharedideas  10-16-2009
Many chemicals used to make conventional mattresses are highly toxic. Flame retardants such as antimony and boric acid (roach killer). Formaldehyde, TDI (toluene di-isocyanate), styrene, butadiene, and other petroleum derivatives are used widely in the mattress industry today. They may make it easier to manufacture a comfortable mattress, but their long-term effects are worrisome. The wool and cotton used in our mattress quilting are certified organic. Buy Savvy Rest’s organic mattress and sleep peacefully.

Camp kids have cancer, disorders Jerry Ensminger, a 24-year Marine Corps veteran, said his daughter, Jane, born in 1976 at Camp Lejeune, was diagnosed with leukemia at age 6 and died at age 9. Jeff Byron, a former Marine air traffic controller, moved with his family into base housing in 1982, three months after his first daughter Andrea was born and two years before his daughter Rachel was born. Rachel is developmentally disabled, has spina bifida and was born with a cleft palate, he said. Andrea has a rare bone marrow syndrome known as aplastic anemia, according to Byron's testimony. Dr. Michael Gros, a Navy obstetrician at Camp Lejeune in the early 1980s, was diagnosed with lymphoma after living in Camp Lejeune housing, he said. Gros said he has had to give up his medical practice and his treatment has cost more than $4.5 million. Jury says chemotherapy drug death was "manslaughter"
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  10-3-2009    3
continued If you accidentally shoot your best friend in a hunting accident, you're held responsible (unless you're the U.S. Vice President, of course). If you have a swimming pool in your back yard, and a drunken neighbor drowns in your pool, you're also held responsible. But somehow, if you're a doctor or pharmacist, and you prescribe a fatal dose of toxic chemicals to a patient, you're off the hook! Doctors and pharmacists have been getting away with murder for so long that no one even remembers what it's like to hold them responsible for their actions. Let's face it: They're in the business of dealing poisons. And when you deal in poison, there needs to be a level of personal responsibility that's adhered to by working professionals. But instead of professionalism, what we're seeing in this case is the complete abandonment of any such notion. When the patient dies, they simply "lose the paperwork" to cover their tracks.

Go PVC-Free for Back-to-School
brightlight4
by brightlight4  8-6-2009
Parents across the country are stocking up on the latest binders and lunchboxes over the next few weeks. But while it’s easy to know the healthiest foods to pack in those lunchboxes, many parents are not aware of the toxic plastic used to make them. In fact, the average child’s character-themed backpack is filled with supplies and materials made from one of the most toxic plastics, polyvinyl chloride (PVC or vinyl). That’s why we at the Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) have released our 2nd annual Back-to-School Guide to PVC-Free School Supplies to help you make healthy shopping choices that are safer for your kids, your community and the environment. The guide features a listing of safer PVC-free school supplies in over 20 product categories - from lunchboxes and backpacks to raingear. We even put together a handy wallet-sized version of the guide for your shopping needs on the go.

Organic Versus Conventional Food: UK Report Flawed
brightlight4
by brightlight4  7-31-2009    5
One of the biggest hurtles to reforming our food system in the United States is our unwillingness to acknowledge at the governmental level the superiority of sustainable agriculture. Leaving aside the nutrient question, organic agriculture helps improve the soil, protects farm workers from exposure to toxic chemicals, places an emphasis on animal welfare, and keeps toxic runoff out of our waterways. In so doing, sustainable agriculture improves not just our personal health, but our collective environmental health. The nutrient content in our food is going down because our soil is being degraded. Sustainable agriculture, by contrast, improves the food we eat by improving our environment. Instead of focusing on puny reports that tell us next to nothing and yet dominate the media with simple binaries, we should be taking an integrative approach to analyzing data and therefore face the hard truths before us. Sustainable agriculture improves the food we eat by improving our environment.

Everything You Need to Know About Plastic
brightlight4
by brightlight4  7-13-2009    3
Deplasticizing Your Food Chemicals are most likely to migrate from plastic into food when exposed to high heat, harsh soaps, and fat. These precautionary measures can help you play it safe. AVOID MICROWAVING IN PLASTIC. Heat speeds the release of chemicals into food. “People are being sold microwave-safe plastic, when in fact we’re not being told what’s in there and the rate at which these chemicals leach out,” says researcher Frederick vom Saal. Avoid this uncertainty by using ceramic or glass instead. EXPLORE THE ALTERNATIVES. “I have one word for you: glass,” says Terry Hassold, a professor of genetics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, who has studied the health effects of bisphenol-A (BPA) on mice. You can also store your food in ceramic containers, waxed- and brown paper bags, and metal canisters made for hot and cold food. USE PAPER–NOT CLING-WRAP. Many studies indicate that most of the cling wrap used by delis and grocery stores contains high levels o
