Running Doc: What to eat and drink pre- and post-workout
Lexica
by Lexica  11-4-2009
French fries and chocolate milk, anyone? More: Post workout, a recovery drink that has carbs as well as added protein is best (in a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate:protein) so as to have amino acids available for repair. If you do not have a “recovery drink” be sure to eat protein in your next meal. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pretzels, tomato juice, and chocolate milk are all good food alternatives to the scientific drinks. Many runners I know love French fries and chocolate milk after a marathon—it works great and you deserve the treat!

Beef Stroganoff- The Healthier Version
StewiePratt
by StewiePratt  10-13-2009
My kids like to refer to this as “creamy pasta” and request it often. As I don’t like to use a lot of processed foods, I was trying to find a way to make a healthier version of this classic recipe, and I was able to come up with a way! This recipe is for a family of four. 1 pound 93% lean ground beef handful of onions clove of garlic 1 cup of fresh sliced mushrooms 2 cups organic beef broth 1 teaspoon organic tomato paste 8 ounces sour cream (low fat or non-fat) Salt and pepper to taste 12 ounces egg noodles Brown your onions and garlic in olive oil under the onions are soft, about five to ten minutes. Add the ground beef and beef broth and cook until beef is no longer pink, add tomato paste and the sour cream, cook a little longer until mixture starts to thicken, add salt and pepper to taste. Serve over egg noodles and enjoy. www.staying-healthy.info

Hurricane Ike's Delayed Gifts for Galveston Island
Rustee
by Rustee  9-17-2009    4
While the more common plants probably came from other island yards, Evans thinks the tiny tomatoes might have come all the way from the Caribbean. “Other people out here on the East End have had that same little tomato,” he said. “No one recognized it, and then I heard by word of mouth that they had come from Cuba. I’m willing to believe that, but I don’t know that it’s true.” Experts cannot verify Evans’ claim, but the unknown origin of the volunteer plants hasn’t kept gardeners from enjoying them. Sounds plausible to me, knowing that our seasonal seaweed (Sargasso) that washes ashore every year comes from hundreds of miles off the east coast in the Atlantic ocean.

Life Without Bumblebees? It's Not Just Honeybees That Are Mysteriously Dying
JackieDel
by JackieDel  9-15-2009
The decline of bumblebees has received far less attention, though in the public imagination their plight has often been conflated with that of the honeybee. Not only do bumblebees pollinate about 15 percent of our food crops (valued at $3 billion), they also occupy a critical role as native pollinators. Plant pollinator interactions can be so specific and thus the loss of even one species carries with it potentially severe ecological consequences. As E. O. Wilson writes, "If the last pollinator species adapted to a plant is erased … the plant will soon follow." The cause: "the rise of the commercial bumblebee rearing industry in the early 1990s, largely for greenhouse tomato pollination. Captive bees, they say, played a key role in spreading disease, which has led to the decline of several North American species, all of which belong to the same subgenus."

Politics is Everything!

64% increase in pay rate is a fair increase for all you Rich Americans! Pay up, or don't eat tomatoes this year! What is CIW, the Coalition of Immokaklee Workers Union? There was an immediate payoff: Chipotle Mexican Grill, the enlightened burrito chain with nearly 900 restaurants across the country, agreed to buy its tomatoes from East Coast Growers (Chipotle had previously declined to support the Fair Food program). Despite the good news, the CIW still has plenty of work to do. Wonder why they changed their mind?
