POPS"Tropic Thunder" Comedy Mocks Hollywood And Movie-Makers
To save the movie, director Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) decides to shoot it documentary-style, with his actors improvising in the jungle. But that idea also goes awry, and the gun-toting actors find themselves up against a drug lord and his minions' real guns. The premise is amusing, though the actual plotting doesn't always make sense, especially when the actors have to face the real-life villains. And as it goes along, the pleasure is not so much from character development as a series of set pieces, such as African-American Chino's view of Lazarus' vision of an African-American, or Grossman's attempts at crisis management. Indeed, Cruise may be the funniest thing in the movie, although he gets competition, notably from Downey and from Jay Baruchel as Kevin Sandusky, the non-star in the acting ensemble. And movie buffs will have fun picking up on the allusions to other films, especially Apocalypse Now. http://www.tropicthunder.com/home.html

POPSScientology Slapped With Civil RICO Suit The Super Adventure Club probably isn't what the statute's drafters had in mind, but then again.. Notre Dame law professor G. Robert Blakey, one of its main drafters, insists that Congress never intended to restrict its application to the Mob. "We don't want one set of rules for people whose collars are blue or whose names end in vowels, and another set for those whose collars are white and have Ivy League diplomas," he says. Presumably the same goes for people whose collars are red and who rule the Galactic Confederacy. (HT: WWTDD)

POPSGeorge Bush and 'Sarko the American' To America's delight, Sarkozy has boosted troops in Afghanistan and is preparing France for a return to Nato's integrated command. This sparked Sarkozy's political opponents in France to rise up against what they warn is an "alignment" with Washington. Current topics of friction between Paris and Washington include Turkey's entry to the EU - Washington supports this but France continues to put spanners in the works - and climate change. Another awkward point is Sarkozy's warming of relations with Syria, which has already met a cautious reaction from the US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice. The Élysée palace announced this week that France has invited the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, to attend the July 14 Bastille day celebrations after a Mediterranean summit in Paris next month.
