What is a Windfall Profit?
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  8-4-2008
Maybe they have in mind profit margins as a percentage of sales. Yet by that standard Exxon's profits don't seem so large. Exxon's profit margin stood at 10% for 2007, which is hardly out of line with the oil and gas industry average of 8.3%, or the 8.9% for U.S. manufacturing (excluding the sputtering auto makers). If that's what constitutes windfall profits, most of corporate America would qualify.Chemicals had an average margin of 12.7%. Computers: 13.7%. Electronics and appliances: 14.5%. Pharmaceuticals (18.4%) and beverages and tobacco (19.1%) round out the Census Bureau's industry rankings. But if 10% is the new standard, the tech industry is going to have to rethink its growth arc. LG, the electronics company, saw its profits grow by 505% in 2007. General Electric profits by investing in the alternative energy technology that Obama says Congress should subsidize GE's profit margin in 2007 was 10.3%, about the same asExxon's.

The Real McCain Record Mark Levin NRO
merrie
by merrie  1-13-2008
His supporters point to essentially one policy strength, McCain’s early support for a surge and counterinsurgency. It has now evolved into McCain taking credit for forcing the president to adopt General David Petreaus’s strategy. Where’s the evidence to support such a claim? McCain has repeatedly called for the immediate closing of Guantanamo Bay and the introduction of al-Qaeda terrorists into our own prisons — despite the legal rights they would immediately gain and the burdens of managing such a dangerous population. While McCain proudly and repeatedly points to his battles with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who had to rebuild the U.S. military and fight a complex war, where was McCain in the lead-up to the war — when the military was being dangerously downsized by the Clinton administration. Where was McCain when the CIA was in desperate need of attention? McCain was apparently in the dark about al-Qaeda like most of Washington, despite a decade of warnings.

Both sides seem keenly aware of the high stakes of the debate, the only ballot measure of its kind in the country this year. Tobacco companies, led by Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds, have spent nearly $12 million, making it the most expensive ballot measure campaign in the state's history.

Cannabis Joint hits lungs like 5 cigarettes.
pokkets
by pokkets  7-30-2007    1
This study is based on the presumption that Cannabis is administered solely by joint. They do not seem to consider the nature of the active ingredients at all. For example THC (The active ingredient of Cannabis) in patches, could be taxed in the same way as tobacco. or filtered through water, to take the heat off. These Scientists are still living in the 60's. A joint is like burning the candle at both ends, both inefficient and and more damaging, often for the sake of portability. Cannabis wasn't prohibited for the sake of it's toxicity, it was as a result of the threat the hemp fibre was to business interests who expected to make subatantial sums from the logging, and cotton industry. Remember all of those ships that toured the seven seas discovering the 'New World' ? The rope was made from Hemp. Maybe not directly related to the study, but I am convinced the argument behind many studies of substances that are supposed to be detrimental, are contrived for the sake of the conclusion.

The denial industry- climate change,
tidbit2
by tidbit2  7-7-2007
that have taken money from the company or work closely with those that have. These organisations take a consistent line on climate change: that the science is contradictory, the scientists are split, environmentalists are charlatans, liars or lunatics, and if governments took action to prevent global warming, they would be endangering the global economy for no good reason. The findings these organisations dislike are labelled "junk science". The findings they welcome are labelled "sound science".

Fred Thompson is actually considering a run for the White House. How reassuring. The last time we had a mediocre actor in the Oval neo-Conservatism was introduced into the government. But then again, who knows; he might bring along as V.P. Sam Waterston to keep him on track.

Lose Weight - Smoke Cigars!
UpStateMike
by UpStateMike  3-7-2007    1
A novel approach to lose some pounds. The rebuttal from the Dr. was that it's the nicotine that acts as a stimulant, and that it's not healthy. Obviously he never smoked cigars or he'd realize the nicotine level is incredibly low in most cigars. Cigars also help someone relax and reduce stress. Like anything, moderation is key. Hey, if it helps to get someone morbidly overweight to eat better, exercise and shed some pounds, it's a good thing.
