The Opinuary Column: Freedom isn't Free (or Alive)
ratilfar
by ratilfar  11-6-2009
It fought its addiction to Crystal Meth (Cheaper Than Coke But Still Not Free) and Tobacco (the first carton for soldiers was Free, but after that, not so much) with grit and determination, which it had in buckets (buckets that were Free but had to be returned when it was done with them). In the weeks before its death, the Opinion was often observed meditating on a litany of uncomfortable realizations: it had discovered that its apartment wasn't Free, its bar tab wasn't Free, its groceries weren't Free and, having failed to appear in court on misdemeanor charges, it suffered the additonal ignominy of facing the fact that indeed, not even its DUI was Free ($250.00 just to post bail!). Its only words to the judge were these: "In the bastardized yet immortal phrasings of Kris Kristofferson: Freedom's just another word for something that isn't free..." Family of the deceased Opinion are asking that, in lieu of flowers (which aren't free) that each and every one of us do our part to d

Why does Joe Lieberman oppose healthcare reform? Ask his wife
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-30-2009
But her stint at Hill & Knowlton was merely one episode in a professional lifetime devoted to the corporate health sector. For most of the past three decades, Hadassah Lieberman has been employed by either pharmaceutical companies or the lobbying firms that represent them -- starting with nearly a decade in the "public affairs department" at Hoffman-LaRoche from 1972-81, followed by stints at Pfizer, where she spent four years as "director of policy, planning and communications," and APCO Associates, a major lobbying firm where she served as a "senior associate" in its large healthcare division before retiring in 1998. She went back to work when she joined H&K, an outfit that became notorious for its billion-dollar defense of the tobacco industry. Not long after her contract began, Sen. Lieberman introduced legislation vastly extending patent protection for pharmaceutical companies -- notably including GlaxoSmithKline, a top client of his wife's firm.

Beekeepers Tell Pesticide Firm to Buzz Off
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  10-4-2009    1
This is absurd! As Graham White, a beekeeper in the Scottish Borders and an environmental author states: "Putting Syngenta in charge of UK research into the causes of honeybee deaths is arguably the equivalent of putting the tobacco companies in charge of research into lung cancer." It’s a foregone conclusion that Syngenta will find that they are not responsible for the decline in bee population. This is a clear case of government in the back pocket of another corporation. And once again, the public is powerless to have any effect on stopping this travesty and government just rubs our noses in the fact.

Really makes me mad when government turns into dictatorship and tries to control my life. Yeah i knows it's bad for you. I know it will eventually kill me. BUT... I don't do drugs, never have, i don't drink, and since doctor told me to either give up cigarettes or sex....well there went the wife...lol I don't bother other people with my 2nd hand smoke because i do respect their wishes not to inhale my smoke. So leave me alone with the smoking ! Have them taxed so much now it costs a fortune. But not alcohol or other things bureaucrats enjoy....why is that. Won't be long before there will be another Tea Party. This time not in Boston but nation wide.

Logic?
lifecyce1898
by lifecyce1898  11-11-2008    2
Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools. A president lying about an extramarital affair is a impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet. The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's driving record is none of our business. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery. Supporting "Executive Privilege" for every Republican ever born, who will be born or who might be born( in perpetuity.)

In all, some 80,000,000 have sought some kind of psych

USA Disdain for EU Must End with Bush's departure.
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  10-31-2008
As Naomi Klein and others have noted, this order contravened international law. The 1907 Hague convention requires an occupying power to respect the laws of the country it has invaded. Before Silverberg, Washington's chief representative in Europe was Clayland Boyden Gray. As the grandson of Bowman Gray, who owned Reynolds Tobacco, he inherited a vast fortune gained from the industry. It is only fitting, then, that he has spent much of his professional life trying to water down environmental and public health rules including the landmark clean air act.
