Campbell wants to see more black models from Hollyhood.
opu1537
by opu1537  11-3-2009
Naomi Campbell has hit out at fashion label bosses, accusing them of snubbing black and Asian models. Campbell broke down barriers when she became the first black model to appear on the cover of the French edition of Vogue in 1988, later repeating the feat in the magazine's, UK, Japanese and Chinese issues. But she insists that 20 years on there are still few opportunities for models who don't have "blond hair and blue eyes". In a message to fans on her blog, the supermodel writes, "Sadly, I don't see enough black women or any other non-white race in big advertising campaigns. As I have said before, companies are not putting girls of colour in their campaigns especially in the panic of the recession. "During any recession, it is at times like these that the companies should be open-minded and come up with inspiring concepts. I love blonde hair and blue eyes but the world is also made up of other colours that are just as inspiring and exciting and should be incorporated in campaign

Cheapest Ways to Avoid Spending Big Money
AScomputer
by AScomputer  10-5-2009
In these times, we are surrounded by almost infinite opportunities to spend money – and an almost infinite number of enticements to take up those opportunities. Advertisements are everywhere. No matter where you go, it’s almost impossible to escape advertising. There are billboards on the highways, magazine ads, newspaper ads, advertisements on TV, internet ads, even ads on clothing. So, the temptation is everywhere.

The Cost of Free...
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  10-2-2009
As a child and family therapist, I have played around with the idea of charging for my services, trying to find something this is reasonable and reflects the value of what I offer. Most of this struggle is internal and has changed as I have come to value myself more. There are times that free is appropriate when it comes to the marketing idea of sampling, to increase interest and find new customers. Don't sell yourself short in the process however.

The Paris Review Interview Archive "Since 1953, when the first issue of the magazine appeared with an interview of E. M. Forster, our Q&A encounters with the great writers of our times have come to be recognized as a sort of literary genre unto themselves: the Paris Review interview. More than fifty years—and more than three hundred interviews—later, the archive continues to grow with each new issue of the magazine. In November 2006, the first volume of a four-book set of The Paris Review Interviews was celebrated by reviewers across the English-speaking world. In tandem with this publishing project, we offer here online a complete index of every interview ever published, searchable by author and by date—as well as a substantial sampling of the archive’s finest interviews, posted in their entirety. Taken together, these conversations with novelists, poets, playwrights, essayists, biographers, journalists, and critics constitute what Salman Rushdie calls “the finest available inqui

Taking Names: White House Collecting Data On Web Users - Video Added
merrie
by merrie  9-17-2009    2
Defenders of the White House actions said the Presidential Records Act requires that the administration gather the information and that it was justified in taking the additional step of asking a private contractor to “crawl and archive” all such material. Nicholas Shapiro, a White House spokesman, declined to say when the practice began or how much the new contract would cost. In a June 5, 2008, article in PC Magazine, Mr. Obama said, “The open information platforms of the 21st century can also tempt institutions to violate the privacy of citizens. We need sensible safeguards that protect privacy in this dynamic new world.” The National Legal and Policy Center, a government ethics watchdog, said archiving the sites would have a “chilling effect” on Web site users who might wish to leave comments critical of the administration. Ken Boehm, a lawyer and chairman of the center, also disputed that the presidential records law applies, because the comments are pasted onto . . .

Goldman Profits. Do We Lose?
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-11-2009    2
From tech stocks to high gas prices, Goldman Sachs has engineered every major market manipulation since the Great Depression - and they're about to do it again. In a brilliant article that appears in the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine, "The Great American Bubble Machine" by Matt Taibbi, we can see in all its gory and horrendous detail what is so wrong with "the invisible hand of the marketplace." From the article: “any attempt to construct a narrative around all the former Goldmanites in influential positions quickly becomes an absurd and pointless exercise, like trying to make a list of everything. What you need to know is the big picture: If America is circling the drain, Goldman Sachs has found a way to be that drain — an extremely unfortunate loophole in the system of Western democratic capitalism, which never foresaw that in a society governed passively by free markets and free elections, organized greed always defeats disorganized democracy.”

Howard Schatz, courtesy of Sony World Photography Awards 2009 Some images are so expressive that time seems to stand still, and nowhere is this more so than in the work of virtuoso fine art photographer Howard Schatz. Schatz’s photography fabulously captures the elegance of the human form, and his Motion Study series gives the grace with which the body can move a uniquely mesmerizing dimension. Moments in time are protracted and preserved – crystallized alongside one another in captivating fragments. The effects are spellbinding, as we appreciate the finely tuned abilities of athletes performing at their peak. Above, energy is coiled and then released in an amazing spiral-patterned image of a golfer’s swing.

Learning to Live with Islam by Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  8-24-2009
Ah, right. That's the big worry, is it? If you're wondering why the link above doesn't go to Lucy Cockcroft's report itself, that's because the Telegraph's original story appears to have suddenly gone missing. Funny how that happens when the subject under discussion is Islam. I would imagine Sebastian Faulks was asked a straightforward question and gave an honest answer. Lux et veritas ("Light and Truth"), as they used to say at Yale. But I would bet that, in the long run, the Zakaria approach will prevail. (Full disclosure: Sebastian came to stay at my pad in New Hampshire to research a novel partly set in my neighborhood. Aside from a blazingly vivid description of the breakfasts I made him, don't pick it up if you're looking for glimpses of real life chez Steyn: He turned me into a woman and had sex with me. I thought of issuing a fatwa and burning down his publishers, but I'm not the type to make a fuss.)
