Human Rights Watch report on Venezuela: An echo of US propaganda
jimbo1000
by jimbo1000  10-1-2008    1
This concerns me. HRW obviously has a strong reputation but this article questions its report on Venezuela. This article is quite convincing in its dealings with the HRW report. I sympathise with Latin American countries in the USA's backyard having once done a stint as a brigadista in Nicaragua in 1985

Comcast's Usage Cap: What Will It Mean To You?
merrie
by merrie  8-29-2008
Users’ monthly fee are tied to their broadband usage, which is capped at 5 Gigabytes to 40 Gigabytes. I bet that if you start tracking your broadband usage, with software listed here, you’ll be unpleasantly surprised. The GigaOM 250 GB Challenge & 5 Tools To Monitor Your Bandwidth Consumption http://gigaom.com/2008/08/29/the-gigaom-250-gb-challenge/ AT&T and Verizon may soon follow in Time Warner’s footsteps, say analysts. I am still waiting for comments from both companies. Home broadband providers are increasingly competing with a slew of new, wireless broadband carriers like Clearwire. With consumers having more choices about which broadband provider to go with, Comcast and others simply can’t afford to tighten their usage caps too much – or to keep them at the current levels for long.

Single digits, huh? Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Reid promised so much...but the final number says it all. Most of us believe that Congressmen & women are more interested in promoting their careers rather than dealing with issues. No one called me, but I couldn't agree more. I saw Sen. Warner talking about lowering the speed limit to 55mph again. What an embarrassment!

Webb Splits With Obama Over Drilling
merrie
by merrie  6-23-2008    1
Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D) of Illinois and Sen. Charles Schumer (D) of New York dismissed any concerns about Webb’s stance, saying they did not notice his proposal Wednesday. Durbin, however, pointedly rejected Webb’s argument that states should have the right to make drilling decisions. The legislation “offers a preliminary step toward exploration and development of one of our domestic energy sources,” Webb said. “In order to address our nation’s energy crisis, all options need to be on the table.” One of Virginia’s most prominent environmental groups also opposes Webb’s idea, saying there is no plausible environmental distinction between gas and oil drilling and that any environmental damage would spread far beyond Virginia’s coast. “This puts the camel’s nose under the tent,” said Glen Besa, director of the Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club.

Think about it--the telecoms have us by the short hairs. They also have immunity (or soon will) from prosecution for helping the Gov't spy on us if they want. We need to speak out about this, wherever possible.

Internet Metering and your use
klippety

If it was up to them, the future of the internet would be the good old days of AOL and their attempt to limit the use. No more music, movies or TV. The future will be blocked by those conglomerates.Free the internet from those few and keep going into the future.

Charging By The Byte To Curb Internet Traffic
merrie
by merrie  6-15-2008
“Based on current trends, total bandwidth in the AT&T network will increase by four times over the next three years,” the company said in a statement. All three companies say that placing caps on broadband use will ensure fair access for all users. Internet metering is a throwback to the days of dial-up service, but at a time when video and interactive games are becoming popular, the experiments could have huge implications for the future of the Web. Even if the caps are far above the average users’ consumption, their mere existence could cause users to reduce their time online. Just ask people who carefully monitor their monthly allotments of cellphone minutes and text messages. “As soon as you put serious uncertainty as to cost on the table, people’s feeling of freedom to predict cost dries up and so does innovation and trying new applications,” Vint Cerf, the chief Internet evangelist for Google who is often called the “father of the Internet.”

What is the Democrat’s plan? So far, none of their energy legislation has added one ounce of oil to supply the needs of Americans. However, they have had plenty of ideas to RAISE gas taxes (here, here and here) and gas prices even higher. Republicans HAVE a plan that would lower gas prices. But thus far, House Democrats have refused to allow the “No More Excuses Energy Act” to come to the floor for a vote. What are Democrats afraid of? You won’t have much “change” left by the time Democrats are through!
