POPSPHOTOS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD II. More of the best and the worst of us, some are shocking, but should not be ignored. Explanations for each are on the website. Thought about flagging this as mature due to the graphic nature of some pictures, but I don't think you should censor history.

POPSPolice Swarm Tiananmen Square to Bar Protest China must realize that their actions today is putting Tiananmen Square in the news. It would be best to get it out into the open and allow those people most affected by that tragic event 20 years ago to grieve for what they know they will probably never have.

POPSChina blocks internet sites, services ahead of Tiananmen anniversary
This is not unexpected. The Tiananmen demonstration anniversary is June 4 and Twitter messages were encouraging people to wear white, the color of mourning, until they were suddenly blocked. For the Chinese authorities to go through this much trouble to suppress the exchange of all other non-related ideas and thoughts just to prevent anything concerning the Tiananmen Square ordeal from getting through illustrates the Chinese authorities distrust of the Chinese people. This action reminds the rest of the world just how repressive China is and for the US government to encourage its citizens to support China through trade with them while demanding, pleading for, suggesting, whimpering about, giving up on human rights reform is irresponsible. It is so futile to hang on to old ways of thought and mind control. The internet has already been let out of the box and to suppress it in this manner just illustrates how old school these people are.

POPSDissent Taboo Certainly dissent harms the bottom line. And don't even bring up laws to ensure worker safety and fair pay. The power change in Washington and it's impact on Chinese relationships will be interesting to watch.

At least 70 of the original signatories have been summoned or interrogated by the police. Prominent dissident Liu Xiaobo has been put under house arrest. The writer Wen Kejian has been detained in the resort city of Hangzhou, close to Shanghai. Police have also ransacked the Beijing home of Zhang Zuhua, one of the main authors of the charter, confiscating his passport as well as his computers, books and notebooks.

POPSChinese Dissidents Urge Beijing Talks With Dalai Lama China is damaging its own international credibility by prohibiting journalists from entering its Tibetan regions, the dissidents added. Yesterday the official Chinese media alleged that the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, was manipulating the protests in a bid to take the Beijing Olympics “hostage.” The administrative leader of Tibet, Qiangba Puncog, was quoted as saying that China must completely defeat “secessionist forces” to “ensure a successful Olympic Games.”
